Imagine if British television worked like Canadian television and shows like Sherlock couldn’t be explicitly set in London, but had to be set in some ultra-generic city that could be anywhere in Europe.

wait what? whats up in canadian tv??

Canada doesn’t have a very large population, so producers can make more money if they try to shoot for an international (i.e., American) audience. Unfortunately, recieved wisdom has it that American audiences would never care about any stories that aren’t set in America (or at least a plausible approximation thereof), so there’s an entire genre of Canadian-made TV series shot in places like Toronto and Vancouver where they never state the name of the city, edit out any identifiable landmarks, flags, or currency, and have all of the Canadian actors talk in generically North American-sounding accents using words like “restroom” and “miles” so that viewers could easily imagine that it was Chicago or LA. Sometimes they actually just explicitly set it in America. Famous examples of this in action include Orphan Black.

something like 70% of all the shows i watch are filmed in vancouver or toronto but only two of them are actually set in canada, wynonna earp and private eyes

on the flipside leverage was filmed here in portland but set in boston, while backstrom was set in portland but filmed in vancouver. and brooklyn 99 is filmed in la, so it's a whole industry thing.

One of the most jealously guarded secrets of TV is the reality that those who get their pilots made and show picked up on any given year are usually no more gifted, visionary, or prodigious, than the ones who did not. There are as many television writers who work regularly as there are professional NBA players at any given time - by that metric, we are all breathing rarefied air - but the process by which television shows are made and selected is by no means some mystical divination by which the artistry of very special snowflakes is empowered that it may elevate the art form as a whole. Television is - quite simply - a business: with winners, losers, seasonal patterns, production schedules, budgets, and deliverables… just like any other business. What we do is nothing more - or less - than hard work… hard work that is not exclusive to any one person, but helped along by scores of competent, experienced professionals whose job security is tied to the longevity of the endeavor… hard work that can be done efficiently, thoughtfully, and in a way that doesn’t ask anyone involved to sacrifice their personal life, dignity, and - sometimes - personal safety.

“I worked as a kind of advisor with Philips Electronics of Eindhoven for twelve years. I designed some real products that were made in the factory and shipped and people bought them.

One time, I was designing a TV set. I had zinc cast mechanical drawings from the factory that was making the molds for the whole case. I went at it as I would design a prop. A very fascinating, wonderful prop for a Sci-Fi movie. [laughs] Here’s the hole there for this knob. Let’s think of it, not as a hole for a knob to go in, but some kind of plug-in receptacle for magic. I did these little gouache sketches, about 8x10, for six designs.

The marketing managers of Spain, Italy, England, Germany, France, Canada and the United States liked my designs better than [those of] any of the staff at Philips who had been doing TV sets for half their professional lives. They were so constrained by what they knew they could or couldn’t do. I didn’t care. Those guys didn’t like me anymore.”

There should be a show called “You’ll Never Find Out” where each week there’s a new story with a new set of characters and it always ends on a cliffhanger.

Well hello there satan

NO BUT THEN IN THE SEASON FINALE THEY HAVE LIKE 3 MINUTE SPOTS TO SHOW THE CONCLUSIONS FOR ALL THE STORIES

AND PLOT TWIST: All those unconnected stories? They connect like puzzle pieces in the end.

I would watch the fuck out of that.

Let’s start with that, the idea that I don’t want this to continue. I don’t think I’m the guy that gets to say what happens at the more effective levels - my career would have a different shape if I were that guy. I’d fire everyone that fired me, give all of you a raise, let the audience pick which pilots go to series and keep shows running as long as their subscription revenue was a dollar over their budget. I am not Mister Shot Caller Guy. That guy went to a better school, didn’t drop out and has lizard blood.

Woman tells of Harris 'assaults' - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-27371573

A woman has told a court Rolf Harris assaulted her several times as a teenager, including once when his own daughter was in the same room.
The alleged victim, who cannot be named, said she was scared of Mr Harris and that his actions were "creepy".
Mr Harris, 84, is alleged to have abused her from the age of 13 at her home and his, as well as on holiday.
The TV entertainer and artist denies 12 counts of indecently assaulting her and three other girls from 1968 to 1986.
His alleged victims were aged between seven or eight and 19 when the offences are said to have taken place.
Seven of the 12 counts are alleged to have been carried out on the woman, who was friends with Mr Harris's daughter Bindi.
[. . .]
The court earlier heard that the woman's father, on being told by his daughter about the alleged assaults, wrote to Mr Harris saying he was "disgusted" and never wanted to see him again.
The jury was told Mr Harris sent a reply, admitting a consensual adult affair and expressing his regret.
The alleged victim said Mr Harris later came to visit her, apologised and said "what have I done to you?" but denied their sexual relationship had begun when she was 13.
Asked why she did not go to the police earlier, the woman told the court she was not "strong enough".
But after seeing Mr Harris on TV at the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in 2012 she decided she could not "get away from this bloody man" who "invades my home" via the TV.
She decided she "wasn't going to have any more of it" and called the police, she said.
Jurors heard evidence of abuse against New Zealand girls during the crown prosecution's opening address at Southwark Crown Court on Saturday, New Zealand time. The alleged abuse does not form part of the charges, as it occurred outside the court's jurisdiction.
Crown prosecutor Sasha Wass, QC, detailed two incidents in New Zealand
The court was told Harris was a Jekyll and Hyde character, whose immense talent and public generosity to children and animals hid a darker side - he was sexually attracted to young girls.
Harris allegedly repeatedly approached girls in a friendly way, then took advantage of his close physical contact to indecently assault them.
At Channel Seven in Australia he was known as "the octopus" for putting his hands on women, Wass said.
Wass said Harris once wrote a "letter of confession" to an alleged victim's father. The letter avoided admitting the sexual relationship took place when she was underage.
Wass said it was like Bill Clinton confessing to smoking marijuana but saying he didn't inhale.

El Rey Network - Robert Rodriguez

How am I just now hearing about this?  One of my favorite directors of all time, arguably a genius in the the entertainment industry, is making his own television network?  Titles like Dusk Till Dawn, Dark Angel and the X-Files reimagined. along with grindhouse movies and action sports. I can’t say it any better than the man himself. Sounds like “iconic, addictive, exciting, visceral television”.  I for one am looking forward to it… might even get cable.

seriously though it makes me honestly fucking angry that people //on tumblr// are complaining about television as zombification bc for one HAVE YOU EVER SEEN TUMBLR it is literally 50% elaborate headcanon fanfiction gifsets, i mean you're right nothing about television engages people's creativity and emotional complexity at all

and for two, seriously, everyone on my dash for the last few days has been //literally crying// about james avery

fresh prince wasn't some emotional intellectual vacuum where the plebians tuned in for mindless entertainment without conscious thought or consideration - while the noble and not-coincidentally much better off patricians sat around considering shakespeare

fresh prince was our family

nobody is saying oh hey, that one guy on that show nobody cared about then or still to this day died, i guess that's sad for him but i have no emotional connection

people are tearing up bc //uncle phil died//

not //will's// uncle phil

//our// uncle phil

how do people not see that

how do they look at the entirety of a medium of communication and say 'it's all teletubbies to me'

and then pretend they're not just being insufferable snobs

why does this fucking nonsense argument always lump all television in together as if if there was no literary equivalent of swamp pawn or ghost mine or whatever the unequivocal Worst Show on right now is

bc all you're really doing is complaining that 90% of the medium is crap and GUESS WHAT you might as well shit on people for reading magazines instead of tolstoy or harlequin romance instead of tolstoy or //harry fucking potter// intsead of tolstoy

bc guess what

90% of the printed page IS NOT FUCKING TOLSTOY

DON'T WATCH GAME OF THRONES

//READ// GAME OF THRONES

FUCK YOU OP

YOU ARE A HACK

seriously the value of television is not some unknowable mystery, television - even the junk food bullshit kind - is about expanding your horizons

you can watch all kinds of people doing all kinds of things and that's cool and interesting and exposes people to all kinds of things they might not otherwise see

let me just give two examples off the top of my head.

nichelle nichols told mlk she was quitting star trek and he begged her not to leave the show, bc //uhura even existing// was literally revolutionary at that time

just having a black woman on a major network show, not even a show regarded as having serious artistic merit - just that she was there, and equal to her peers, and not a servant

that was //culturally important//

television was important

that was fifty years ago

two years ago the hunger games movie dropped and all these teenagers you love who love to read walked out of the movie tweeting about how it wasn't as sad when rue died bc she was 'just some black girl', not like the pretty innocent white girl they imagined

bc all these eager readers are so insular in their viewing habits that even though rue is described as brown, //they could not see her as brown//

in the magical fantasy world of their imaginations, where literally anything is possible

a little brown girl was heresy

fuck you op, we don't need people to watch less tv

we need people to watch //more//

when The Show That Must Not Be Named premiered a friend who had watched the pilot said something to me along the lines of how it’s pretty suspicious and it should be interrogated that almost anytime a woman is praised for being “honest” and “revealing” and “true to the female experience” it’s for putting herself in humiliating situations or revealing things coded as weaknesses, often in this way that isn’t really glamorizing but reminds me of the way dead women show up on tv shows sometimes — maybe not sexualized exactly, but like, look, look at this, isn’t this what you want to see.
