Above: Batman design for an old pitch I realize now I probably never even sent in to DC. I had thought this would have been about eight years old (which is the last time I gave pitching a shot). But I remember that the concept had been heavily influenced by the recent debut of Adventure Time, and that was only six years ago. So. Never made it out of the sketchbook.

The short version of the plot is “Teen Post-Apocalyptic Batman.” The longer version is “Orphaned kid adopts the identity of ‘Nightwing’ and assembles a team of weird loners and outsiders from a strange post-apocalyptic landscape so as to free the champions of a forgotten era and end the reign of the thirteen warlords of the so-called Legion of Doom.” There y’go.

Coloring on this is a new thing I’m trying and which I’m enjoying very much, despite it possessing (probably) too many steps to really justify the end result. Way it works is:

  • I draw the original piece, pen and ink on paper (bristol, cardstock or sketchbook, I don’t discriminate).
  • Erase the pencils, scan it, and run it through Illustrator to create a flat-black line
  • Take it to Photoshop, lay in color flats beneath the linework
  • Go back to the original and color it with an assortment of Prismacolor markers, cool grey 20%, 30%, 40%, 60% and 80%
  • Scan the image again with the grayscale, lay the resulting scan into the photoshop document under the linework and flats. Set the flats to multiply so that the markers show through.
  • After that, if necessary, I have a collection of textures which I might throw over the flats and set to Soft Light or Overlay at a reduced opacity.

So the photoshop document ends up looking like:

  • Linework
  • Stock texture (soft light/overlay at 30-80% opacity)
  • Color flats (multiplied)
  • Marker colors

Among the questions you may be asking is “Jon, wouldn’t it be easier to just use colored Prismacolors and skip the flatting altogether?” Well, listen, you have no right to speak to me that way and I insist that you leave my son’s bar mitzvah immediately. But to answer your question, I could, except (1) that would be a lot of markers, (2) that would be expensive, (3) I have no place to put them, (4) I can get a wider palette using photoshop and (5) I can change the colors as I see fit by changing the flat colors. Ta-da, the post-apocalyptic world of color!

While talking about Warner Brothers’ commitment to bring diversity to their DC Comics film properties, such as their current plans for both Aquaman and his wife Mera to be cast with non-white actors, the folks at JoBlo revealed that they’ve heard that the Cyborg solo film, which has a release date of 2020, has morphed into a Teen Titans team-up movie instead. For longtime fans of the character, this news makes total sense if true. Victor Stone, a.k.a. Cyborg, has almost zero history as a solo hero, mostly appearing over the last thirty years as a member of the Teen Titans, both in the comics and on the animated TV series. Cyborg’s teammates have included characters like Raven, Starfire, and Beast Boy, all characters who could also be portrayed by ethnically diverse actors. This lines up with other recent rumors that Warner Brothers was planning on introducing Black Canary as a member of the Justice League first, only to spin her off into a Birds of Prey movie down the line, featuring Canary and other prominent female DC heroes as her teammates. Warners could be taking a similar tactic with Cyborg, by introducing him first as a the junior member of the League, only to shine a bigger spotlight on him as he gathers his own team of young heroes together. According to the same report, Justice League would also be used a springboard to spin-off Green Lanterns John Stewart and Hal Jordan into a Green Lantern Corps reboot film, which is being described as a “Lethal Weapon in space team-up,” a kind of interstellar buddy cop movie. While right now it’s unknown if the Justice League movie would feature Hal Jordan or John Stewart as the team’s resident GL, the Green Lantern Corps movie would certainly feature both of them prominently. In addition, an LGBT hero is said to be part of one of these films, although who this could be remains a mystery.

"we were going to make two black hero solo films, but we turned them into team books instead. now ww can put all the non-white non-dude heroes all together on the margins and the justice league can stay all chris like the avengers. you're welcome, diversity."

Its been NINE YEARS and i still dont think anyone knows exactly why teen titans was cancelled

Same reason Young Justice and Green Lantern The Animated Series were canceled: Girls liked it. Bruce Timm finally up an’ said it out loud in an interview a while back when he was asked why in the hell GL:TAS had been canceled when it was doing so well on every front; DC’s animation department has institutionally decided that feee-males don’t/can’t/shouldn’t like superheroes, so even if a show is drawing in great viewership numbers and has great toy sales, once they find out that it’s popular with women and girls, they pull the plug on it. Cartoon Network loved Teen Titans— two million viewers for new episodes will do that— and wanted a Season Six, and the production staff was already in the planning stages for it; they were going to have a big arc about Terra and why she was Living Normal, and do a lot more with the extended Titans team members.

This is so fucked up.

To elaborate on this point a bit, the reason this happens is that modern television merchandising aims for total market segregation.

In a nutshell, it’s much more efficient to sell things to people if you can divide them up into tightly defined subcategories that have no interests in common; that way, you never risk accidentally competing with yourself.

This is why children’s toys (and toy sales channels) are actually much more strongly gendered these days than they were forty, thirty, even twenty years ago: one of the basic market segregation splits they’ve decided to use is “boys versus girls”.

Ever wonder why you see Avengers t-shirts that leave Black Widow out of the group shot, or Guardians of the Galaxy action figure lines with no Gamora? That’s market segregation in action.

The upshot is that shows with crossover appeal can actually be cancelled for being too popular with girls; they’re viewed as “stealing” the female market from the specifically girl-targeted media that rightfully “owns” it.

This is the sort of thing folks are talking about when they say gender roles are socially constructed, by the way. The gender split in media merchandising? It’s not just artificial, it’s deliberately imposed as a top-down marketing strategy. When folks try to justify it by saying “this is the ways it’s always been” or “this is just what the market wants”, they’re lying through their teeth - this is, in fact, the merchandisers dictating to the market what it wants in order to sell stuff more efficiently.

(Interestingly, the reverse isn’t always true: if a specifically girl-targeted show unexpectedly becomes popular with boys, sometimes rather than being cancelled, its merchandising will shift to court the male collector’s market. TV execs are so sexist, even their sexism is sexist.)
