MALCOLM X: I’d rather not say right now what I’m going to do. But I’m going to do, while I’m here, whatever will produce some positive and constructive results. I might point out that I am 100 percent for any effort put forth by Black people in this country to have access to the ballot. And I frankly believe that since the ballot is our right, that we are within our right to use whatever means is necessary to secure those rights. And I think that the people in this part of the world would do well to listen to Dr. Martin Luther King and give him what he’s asking for, and give it to him fast, before some other factions come along and try to do it another way. What he’s asking for is right. That’s the ballot. And if he can’t get it the way he’s trying to get it, then it’s going to be gotten, one way or the other. QUESTION: Are you in agreement with Dr. King’s nonviolent— MALCOLM X: I don’t believe in any kind of nonviolence. I believe that it’s right to be nonviolent with people who are nonviolent. But when you’re dealing with an enemy who doesn’t know what nonviolence is, as far as I’m concerned you’re wasting your time.

“the blood of four little children … is on your hands. Your irresponsible and misguided actions have created in Birmingham and Alabama the atmosphere that has induced continued violence and now murder.” Dr.Martin Luther King Jr.

Bayard Rustin was an openly gay Black man who was Martin Luther King’s right hand man. He planned the Million Man March and was subject to scrutiny for his sexuality and deemed a “deviant” and “pervert”.

Bayard Rustin can be found in nearly every picture of MLK yet he has undoubtedly been erased from history. We have to fix that.

Well then, let’s bring that name back.

Bayard Rustin, openly gay, human rights activist, proud black man.

(the guy on the left in case you wondered)

Not just MLK’s right hand man. He recognized early MLK’s leadership skills and helped to organize the SLCL to fortify MLK’s position as a leader. He’s the one who convinced MLK of non-violence as the most effective strategy, after having gone to India to observe its practice in the Indian independence movement.

George Wallace, America’s Icon of southern racism. Young folks may not know this piece of scum also ran for president.

Wallace’s motto:  “Segregation now. Segregation tomorrow. And segregation forever.”

Donald Trump is just George Wallace with a different accent.

I pretty much ignored the Boycott Star Wars VII ordeal because it sounded like a bunch of trolls and people giving them attention. Then I saw a couple people who actually think that this film is anti-white.

I only want to watch this because it’ll make em squirm.

Today’s “unruly” & “disruptive” #BlackLivesMatter protesters are in very good company.

50 years ago, the “moderate” mainstream media concern-trolled Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, intimating that his “disruptive” direct action protests were irksome and essentially unnecessary because white people should be trusted to eventually do the right thing. One interviewer’s words reveal the level of paternalism black Civil Rights activists had to contend with: “The former president, Harry Truman, recently said this, and I quote, ‘If anyone came to my store and sat down, I would throw him out. Private business has its own rights and can do what it wants.’ Now, Dr. King, President Truman is an old friend of the Negro, I believe. Isn’t it an indication that the sit in strikes are doing more harm than good?

Civil Rights, Allies, Riots and ‘Now vs Then’

There is surprisingly little different today when paternalistic, so-called “progressives” still infantilize #BLM activists and their supporters, many openly stating that we have no idea what is in our own best political interests. These same people claim to be our friends and “allies” who agree with our goals and want an end to racial injustice, but they can’t quite agree with direct action activism because it’s just too gosh darn disruptive…for them. Could you imagine if one of your neighbors came to your house banging on your door begging for help, saying that their home is on fire and you calmly responded that you really would like to help, but because of all their yelling and screaming, you think less of them and then you admonished them for not being polite as they’re experiencing an immediate life-or-death crisis?

(SN: right now might be a good time to google Dr. King’s “Letter From a Birmingham Jail” and see what he had to say about paternalistic, “moderate whites” possibly being a bigger impediment to racial justice than any Klu Klux Klanner)

Back then, many white leaders said they agreed that racism was wrong, but complained that simple sit-in protests were too disruptive to achieve any meaningful change. Today, many white people say that they agree with #BLM protesters, but simply interrupting a speech is far too unruly and won’t achieve any change. Back then, the government spied on Dr. King. Today, Homeland Security is spying on DeRay McKesson and other prominent #BLM activists. Back then, the media weighed black lives against property damage. Now the media weighs the value of black life against property damage. Then, the police incited riots in cities like Watts, Harlem and Detroit. Now the police incite riots in cities like Baltimore, St. Louis and Ferguson.

Other than technology and a more agile, decentralized leadership structure, the only significant difference between Civil Rights activism now and back then is that back then, Dr. King was alive to speak for himself. Now, many of our “allies” just throw some self-serving, out of context King quote at black people like some MKL Pokemon, to silence any black person who is justifiably in distress as unarmed black people continue to be randomly murdered by the police, for no other reason than the color of our skin.

Yet, racists and sellout black folk love to use him as a way of shooting down #BlackLivesMatter, when the movement is pulling from his playbook.   SMH.

People keep acting like segregation happened soo long ago, and that all the people who experienced it are dead. It I just ask that you think again.

I had the honor of meeting him and sitting in his office as a child, I am forever grateful for what he has done for the black community.

Rep. John Lewis marches through Comic-Con

This past weekend, politician and genuine American hero John Lewis made the trip to Comic-Con International to spread the word about “March: Book Two,” the second volume of the graphic novel trilogy detailing his experiences in the U.S. Civil Rights Movement. But as detailed by the Washington Post, Rep. Lewis didn’t just drop in for a quiet appearance, he marched through the convention center with a group of children in tow. Wearing a trench coat and backpack filled with copies of “March,” Lewis arrived at Comic-Con “cosplaying” as his 25-year-old self, who led hundreds on a march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge.

Co-written with his staffer Andrew Aydin and drawn by Nate Powell (“Swallow Me Whole”), the “March” books are a three-part set of memoirs telling Rep. Lewis’ story from his days as a young boy in segregated Alabama, to being beaten in the Selma march of 1965, to his time as U.S. Representative for Georgia’s 5th congressional district, a position he’s held since 1987.

On Saturday, Lewis took the stage at Comic-Con International alongside Aydin and Powell to discuss the books, his lifelong message of nonviolent protest and share a preview for “Book Three.” In attendance were a group of third-graders from San Diego’s own Oak Park Elementary, who then accompanied the congressman in a march from the panel to his signing at Top Shelf Productions’ booth, echoing his “Bloody Sunday” march.

Cinematographers You Should Know: 2/∞

Bradford Young (7/6/1977 - )

“I’ve always said that I find film lighting technology to be a bit obtrusive in creating a space where actors and the directors can work in real harmony. Especially for collaborators who are working under tough monetary constraints, one has to be very strategic and very liberated about how one uses light. I think it’s a DP’s duty to help create a space where all can stay invested emotionally. As a cinematographer, I’m intrigued by the idea of lighting space and letting bodies fluctuate, and oscillate through that light.”

This man was responsible for the cinematography in both Selma and A Most Violent Year and was recognized by AMPAS for neither
