National Ballet of China
Known within China as the Central Ballet Troupe, the National Ballet of China was founded by Mao Zedong in 1959 and largely run by Mao’s wife Jiang Qing, who produced two revolutionary ballets The White-Haired Girl and The Red Detachment of Women. I grew up watching this stuff because that’s what was coming out of China at that time, it was all revolution all the time. These days, about half of their performance repertoire are Chinese works and the rest are well-known Western ballets such as Swan Lake and Don Quixote.
