Excerpt from this story from Grist:

Last summer, after a series of devastating wildfires, the Oregon state legislature passed a sweeping bipartisan bill to protect against future blazes. The law unlocked money to develop new building codes in vulnerable areas and help residents who wanted to fireproof their homes. It reached the governor’s desk with support from Portland-area Democrats and rural Republicans alike.
Before state officials could implement the new regulations, though, they needed to figure out which areas faced the greatest fire danger. For this reason, the bill required the state forestry department to create a comprehensive wildfire risk map within a year, assigning a risk score to every household in the state. The forestry department finished the map right on time in June. It then mailed a letter to every homeowner who was in a high-risk zone, alerting them that new regulations would be coming soon.
This seemingly anodyne mapping measure produced a frenzy of backlash from every corner of the state. Hundreds of residents showed up at public meetings to berate state officials for designating their homes high risk, and hundreds more wrote in to contest their risk status. Many argued that the state was going to make their insurance more expensive and their property less valuable.
The same Republican lawmakers who had supported the wildfire bill then pounced on the map as an example of state overreach. In early August, the state caved and withdrew the map, vowing to spend another year gathering feedback before releasing a final version. In a tight race for state governor that will be decided next week, the Democratic candidate has distanced herself from the old version of the risk assessment, saying the revision “must address concerns from property owners.”

This is extremely stupid. Living in denial won’t save people’s lives. Understanding your risk is important.

Where i live the council produces and publishes flood maps. Because flooding is a major problem here. They’re constantly maintained and incredibly useful.

"yes the senate gop wing literally fled the state and threatened violence from their white supremacist allies, but the bill probably would have failed anyways so no harm done" is literally a childish take. this is the 'you stopped me before i got a cookie out of the cookie jar so i didnt do anything wrong' of political journalism. #oregon #portlandtribune #gop #fascism #snakeoil https://www.instagram.com/p/B07E3N9A2gX/?igshid=g65cv23hidhy

remember two years ago when the portland gop boss said they wld have to hire oathkeepers to protect them from mean old antifa? well now the state gop reps are just, fucking off and refusing to legislate, and one dude said state troopers better be ready to come fucking kill him or die trying. remember the malheur siege? this is that but it's the actual government. hardline conservatives declaring that being the minority party is 'tyranny', and threatening to arm up for a violent confrontation with state troopers so they can't be forced to (checks notes) pass a cap-and-trade plan similar to the one california(?) already passed. minimum action on climate change? TYRANNY. doing your god damn job? TREASON. remember 100 years of oregon being one big sundown town, bravely holding the line against freed slaves, chinese and mexican laborers, and japanese citizens? this is rooted in that too. the whole states rights (to own slaves) argument has long informed oregon's whole deal, and now blue portland dominating a resentful red state is a microcosm of the electoral college 'tyranny of the urban elites' bullshit fox news cover story for white resentment against civil rights, losing majority status, the end of the cold war profit machine, and so on. the bluer portland gets the angrier the rest of the state gets about, whatever fox et al are selling today, and this is, NOT A SUSTAINABLE MODEL OF GOVERNANCE. remember the guy on the max train two? years ago who murdered two ppl trying to stop him from harassing some muslim girls? these are the conservative authority figures who enable him by standing up next to fascist white supremacist militias and saying 'you can't force us to cut carbon emissions by a margin already insufficient to solve the looming climate crisis, so we need actual neonazis to protect us from **liberal majorities**'. #oregon #fascism #whitesupremacy #gop #snakeoil https://www.instagram.com/p/By_I7SGAHE9/?igshid=13dhpa20h2zqo

I can smell the entitlement in the air

Oregon was a mistake

Oregon, what you doin???

I think I am most bewildered by how many people seem to think that you spend the rest of the day reeking of gas fumes if you touch a gas pump. Do they think you pour the gas all over yourself…? Why are these gas fumes clinging to you through your day such that you will not be fit to be around other humans…?

I didn’t even know there were places left that let you pump your own gas.

@antyc67 in Britain we pump our own.

I didn’t know there were any stations left where people don’t pump their own gas.  Every gas station I’ve ever seen has been self-service since the 1970s.

I’ve lived in Central Michigan my entire life and i have never heard of people just….not pumping their gas……i’m so fucking confused.

Oregon: You expect us to pump our own gas like peasants? :/

The entire rest of the world:

Oregan is something else.

I am so ashamed to live North of them. Wow.

As far as I know it’s been at least 30 years since we’ve had full service at petrol stations in Australia. Welcome to 1987, Oregon.

I just chatted with one of my closest friends, who is originally from Montana. is what she told me:

The plus side is that there has been a tremendous community response. However, I worry about the police in that area of the state. They say they’re doing extra patrols, but a lot of them are alt-right/neo-nazi affiliated, and I don’t trust them. The rabbi in Whitefish [the town where this occurring] is amazing, and I’m so upset for their congregation. My home synagogue is being targeted in Missoula, but so far they haven’t published individual member info like they did in Whitefish.

Given what we already know about alt-reich affiliated police officers all across country in relation to anti-black shootings and other crimes, I do not think her fears are unfounded. There is a chance that the local police could be the once to target the people they are being assigned to protect.

Please share this so that people know what the alt-reich are doing and keep the Jews of Montana in your thoughts and/or prayers.

White supremacists have been making a move to Montana for awhile now because they view it as this lawless land of sorts where they can gather support and do their shit unnoticed. That dick wad in the photo has a house in the Kalispell/Flathead area.

Likewise, they’ve organized expansive networks in Idaho, Iowa, Washington state and Oregon. All are historically sundown states, and have already experienced periods of control by violent, open, white supremacists.

Be safe out there, yall.

“Too many states are making working Americans, people of color, young people and those with disabilities go to absurd lengths just to exercise their constitutional right to vote,” Wyden said. “When fewer Americans vote, the special interests and big businesses win and everyone else loses. Government can never truly represent the American people if citizens don’t have the opportunity to have their voices heard at the ballot box.”
Voters across the country have faced unreasonable delays and new obstacles to voting. This year alone: some voters in Arizona waited in line for up to 5 hours, New York is investigating why 126,000 voters were purged from voting rolls, Rhode Island slashed the number of polling places by two-thirds and 17 states have added new voting restrictions.
The American Association of People with Disabilities, American Civil Liberties Union, Common Cause and National Association of Letter Carriers announced their support for Wyden’s legislation.
The Vote By Mail Act requires every state to provide registered voters the opportunity vote by mail. All registered voters will receive ballots in the mail weeks before Election Day, allowing them to carefully research candidates well ahead of time. By providing the opportunity to cast ballots in the mail, voters will be able to avoid long lines at polling stations and won’t have to take time off work to exercise their constitutionally guaranteed right to vote. The federal government, through the Unites States Postal Service, will assist states with the costs of mailing ballots to registered voters.
Building on Oregon’s automatic voter registration program, this bill also improves voter registration to which reduce the burden on busy working Americans. The bill requires states to ensure that each citizen who provides identifying information to their state motor vehicle authority is automatically registered to vote.

tldr oregon has had 100% vote-by-mail since the 90s, and recently added automatic voter registration via the dmv, and it's amazing, and now wyden merkley and blumenauer and pushing for that to go nationwide.

find your local representative here - http://whoismyrepresentative.com - and call them and help get this some support in the house and senate.
