They arrested me,
as I laughed alone like a madman,
at a speech fit for a Caliph.
My laughter cost me ten years.
They asked me,
while I was in the interrogation room, who had instigated me,
and I laughed.
And they asked me about the money, and who had paid me,
and I laughed.
They wrote down all my answers… and did not answer me.
The public prosecutor said of me, and the soldiers said, when they arrested me,
that I was against the government.
I did not know that laughter needed a government permit, and fees and stamps.
I did not know anything about brainwashing… or the grinding of fingers.
In my country…
Man may write against God but not against the government.
So forgive me gentlemen
if I laughed,
I would have liked to weep…
but I laughed.
