A dam in south-east Brazil collapsed on Friday (Jan 25), unleashing a torrent of mud that killed an as-yet-undetermined number of people living in an area close to the city of Belo Horizonte, a local fire service official said.

Emergency services were still responding to the situation in and around the town of Brumadinho and did not yet have a precise toll, the official told AFP.

“According to accounts that we are receiving, there were several deaths,” the official said.

Television images taken from the air showed a wide swath of devastation cut through vegetation and farmland. Several homes were seen, many damaged and some destroyed, with nothing but their tiled roofs left sitting on mud.

The dam belonged to Brazil’s giant mining company Vale, which confirmed its collapse and said “the total priority is to protect the lives of employees and inhabitants.”

The emergency recalled trauma from a 2015 dam break in a different part of the same state of Minas Gerais, at Mariana, in which 19 people died. It released millions of tons of toxic iron waste, causing what was considered the country’s worst environmental disaster.

Observations: Brazil’s president Jair Bolsonaro and Romeu Zema (governor of Minas Gerais, the state in which this burst happened) have both vowed to flexibilize environmental regulations.

Updates 18h02:

  • Belo Horizonte, capital of Minas Gerais and nearby Brumadinho, is not at risk of water shortage, according to the state’s water supply company (Copasa);
  • Vale workers talk about a restaurant of the company that’s been buried (with rumours that there were 1,200 people inside);
  • According to a report published in the end of 2018 by Brazil’s National Water Agency, the number of dams considered more vulnerable went from 25 in 2016 to 45 in 2017. The report shows a series of dams in Brumadinho, including Vale’s, with potential damages classified as “high.” Most of the cited cases present problems of low conservation level. Of the 45 dams, 25 belong to public bodies and entities;
  • Inhabitants of Brumadinho had mobilized against the authorization of mining activities in the city last month. They claimed many dams were irregular and that they’d feel small earthquakes.

Update 19h04: tailings from the dam burst threatens Rio Paraopeba, one of the main affluents of the São Francisco River, the longest river in Brazil. Tailings might arrive there in two days. The country’s National Water Agency confirmed that the dam of the Retiro Baixo hydroelectric plant, located 220 km from the site of the rupture, might allow the damping of the tailings. All implicated authorities are constantly monitoring the sitation.

Updates 19h18:

  • Among the 200 people missing, 100 were confirmed to be workers from Vale, who were having lunch in the dam’s administrative area when a torrent of sludge and water hit it. There are no reports of fatalities yet;
  • Two lower dams gave way after the bigger one burst;
  • There were people trapped in nearby areas flooded by the river of sludge. Parts of the local community Vila Forteco, near the town of Brumadinho, were hit. Families were told to evacuate homes in low-lying areas.

2. How the hell did she stay so calm??

And this shitbag is running for president rn

He looks like he died and was left in the desert to rot, covered over with dirt for a week, then dug up, reanimated and made a political candidate.

If you look at her eyes closely you can see all the ways she’s imagining killing him

one of the oldest and arguably the most important museum in Brazil is burning to the ground as we speak. home to the portuguese royal family from 1808 to 1821, the Museu Nacional stored fossils, meteorites, pre-historic human skeletons and a variety of artefacts related to natural history. it holds two centuries of latin & brazilian history and now it’s all gone.

some of the things that are now lost forever: the largest collection of egyptian artefacts in latin america; the skeleton of the largest flying reptile ever found in Brazil; the oldest human fossil ever found in the country, named “Luzia” (over 11.000 y.o) and other 20 million extremely important relics and researches just burned to the ground. never to be seen again.

thanks to our government, of course, who didn’t want to pay the museum the necessary funds to make the essencial maintenances since 2014 (which by the way, costed less than a supreme federal court judge’s sallary: R$520 in a year).

another sad instance where the state’s indifference towards culture and history becomes painfully obvious. this is a massive blow to our cultural legacy.

all that in our independe week. happy independe for us, brazilians, who just lost our history and culture in a fire caused by ignorance and indifference.

in case you’re wondering, this is what the museum used to look like:

this is what it looks like now:

thousands of years of culture lost. happy independence week.

Authorities say the fire lasted for six hours, causing irreparable damage. To put it bluntly: it’s all gone. A meteorite, that can sustain incredibly high temperatures, was found intact. But other than that, there are apparently no other pieces left. It would not be an understatement to call the Museu Nacional the Brazilian equivalent of the Louvre or the British Museum.”

here is some of the international news saying on this, because most articles and videos are all in portuguese, u can check some of the news in english: (here *new york times*) (here *bbc news*) (here *le monde* for french speaking readers) (here *shorouk news* for people who speak arabian) (here *azteca news* for spanish) (here *corriere della sera* for italian).

it was a natural science and historic museum, there were all sorts of important researches and relics. all burned. this was our culture. our history. the first human fossil found in brazil (mentioned above, Luzia) was so important for science, since it proved that way before indigenous tribes existed in Brazil, there were black people.

this is the place where our first constitution was made and the declaration of independence was signed. our independe day is this friday. heartbroken.

I am sorry for the loss of these irreplaceable things.

There’s a fire in the brazilian National Museum, in Rio de Janeiro. The flames seem to have reached everything. The Museum turned 200 years old in 2018 and it had over 200 million items, including the oldest human skeleton ever found in the Americas (over 11.000 years old). The Museum was also the house of the royal family when they came to Brazil as a colony, and the residency of the emperial family after that. This week, on September 7th, we celebrate the brazilian independency, which was signed in that building. I can’t put in words how sad I am, or how huge this loss is for Brazil and for humanity. The government has been cutting funds from education and culture, which includes most of the money for the Museum’s maintance. This tragedy is very simbolic of the crisis Brazil is facing in many forms. Our history is burning to the ground, and this is no accident.

i don’t know if people outside of brazil are aware of this, but our country just decriminalized gay conversion therapy. basically, it is now 100% legal for therapists to treat homosexuality as a disease if they want to.

btw here are are some sources to read more about it (they’re all in portuguese): 1, 2, 3, 4.

we need more people talking about this on the media.

please reblog this, especially if you’re not brazilian.

Brazilian domestic spies use Tinder to infiltrate protest movements

Brazilian Army Captain Willian Pina Botelho posed as Baltazar “Balta” Nunes in a fake Tinder profile and set out to seduce members of left wing anti-government protest movements in order to infiltrate them.

Botelho’s Tinder profile sported fake quotes from Karl Marx and a desire to meet “leftist” women. Through one of the women he met, Botelho was able to identify 21 protesters who were subsequently arrested on his say-so and held without a hearing or access to attorneys. Finally, a judge discovered what was going on and ordered their release, condemning their arrests.

Subsequently, Botelho’s real identity was linked to his Tinder alias, and the story began to unravel. The Brazilian Army has confirmed that “Balta was working with knowledge and cooperation from the São Paulo state government.”

Anonymous asked:

Are you really brazilian? I didn't know there were black people in brazil.

“From the year 1500 to 1850, an estimated 3.5 million Africans were forcibly shipped to Brazil. It is estimated that more than half of the Brazilian population is at least in part descendants of these Africans. Brazil has the largest population of Afro-descendants outside of Africa.”

Video: About 100 police officers in Brazil have evicted nine Guarani families from their Tekoha, their ancestral land, destroying their homes and forcing them to live on roadsides. Help Damiana’s community here

The colonization is Latin America ongoing. Visualizing or presenting any place in Latin America as a “perfectly mixed, now we’re all one people yay” utopia is violence.
