His widow, photographer, actress, and model, Berry Berenson (1948 – 2001) tragically died 9 years later, in the September 11 attacks as a passenger on American Airlines Flight 11 — one day before the 9th anniversary of her husbands death. . Born in NYC and son of actor Osgood Perkins, Perkins had same sex relationships until his late 30s that included #RockHudson, #TabHunter and #RudolfNureyev. In 1973, he met Berenson at a party in New York and married when he was age 41. They later had two sons. . Diagnosed with HIV during the filming of Psycho IV Perkins kept his illness secret. Berenson recalled: . “He simply never wanted anyone to know. He figured if anyone knew they’d never give him work again. He went twice to stay at the hospital, and once as an out-patient, and we went under another name.” . Perkins was tested for HIV after an article in The Enquirer said he was HIV positive. Berenson claimed that her husband had not been tested specifically but instead tested for other ailments. She believed that someone had tested Perkins blood for HIV, without his consent, and gave the test results to The Enquirer. . After the story appeared, Perkins was tested and found to be HIV positive. Berenson said the tabloids persecuted them: . “They were horrendous, following my housekeeper to her home or the supermarket, They haunted us like vultures. Toward the end he was tired and depressed. He didn’t want anybody to see him. He couldn’t stand up. A friend or two would come and he would say, ‘I’m ready to go,” and they would say, 'It’s O.K., why don’t you?’ But he was just holding on, holding on for the boys and me.“ . In his final days, Perkins spoke about issuing a letter after his death. His sons transcribed his words: . "I chose not to go public about this, because to misquote ’#Casablanca,’.
