Lucas Sinclair slowly losing faith in milkvan is my favorite thing.
Like, he was the first one to tell Mike that he likes El, and basically prompted their first kiss by accident. Then he gives mike advice about her all throughout S3, thinking that mike is clueless but in love.
But after season 4, he notices some weird things.
"That's not how love should feel, Mike. You shouldn't have to lie, or destroy yourself."
"She's not a superhero, she's your girlfriend."
"If you really love her, why was everything you said a lie?"

We kinda see this in s3 where Will says the Mind Flayer is back and Mike is like ALRIGHT PEOPLE THE MIND FLAYER IS BACK TIME TO MOBILIZE, even in s2 he’s there as support for Will and doesn’t take the lead until Will is at Hopper’s cabin, out of Mike’s reach.

honestly the biggest byler proof is the fact that ive seen milevens convert to byler after seeing evidence in favor of byler but never a byler converting to mileven when seeing evidence in favor of mileven (if there is any). if that doesnt speak volumes idk what does. once someone is a byler nothing will switch them to a mileven, cant say the same about milevens though.

i want to first present you all this image because it is vitally important for this microanalysis:
the scene was shot in a studio, which means this:
along with the whole of this scene, is shot with artificial lighting. cinematographers/directors have full control to enhance what’s going on in this scene. to tell us what’s really being said here.

now let me reiterate: will is leaning further into the shot as mike is saying “she’s special.” he’s leaning in and the light is following him.
mike continues, and for some reason, as we’re hearing about “el”, the shot lingers on will, and he is in total focus.
notice how the light amps up as mike goes on.
this is the last shot before we cut back to mike, and will is more illuminated than ever.
idk about you but to me it feels like the light is literally begging viewers to realize that mike is talking about will here (in terms of him being special, and mike being one of the first people to realize it).
like “hey, he’s right here, this guy right here, this is who he’s really talking about. i’m literally putting him under a SPOTLIGHT right now.”
what’s even more interesting about this is the line mike says that triggers a cut back to him:
“but the truth is, when i stumbled on her in the woods, she just needed someone. it’s not fate. it’s not destiny. it’s just simple dumb luck.”

clearly this is no longer about will, but here’s an interesting connection to the textual references @love-byers makes in the post i linked at the top:

what you said while in a calm space with the one person who you feel most comfortable opening up to, or what you said while the fate of el’s life depended on you saying as much as you can so she doesn’t die?
truth vs hyperbole.
why would mike feel the need to exaggerate what he’s already expressed to will in the van?
unless of course, he had someone else on his mind while saying he doesn’t know how live without “el”.
and the scary “i feel like my life started the day we found you in the woods”
says the mike who truthfully denied it as fate or destiny that very day.
tracing back to “maybe i was one of the first people to realize that.” who was will’s first friend? mike.
who claimed that asking will to be his friend was the best thing he’s ever done (which contrasts what mike says about stumbling on el in the woods, too)? mike.
and again, who claimed that finding el in the woods wasn’t fate or destiny, as a character who’s shown disbelief in love at first sight before? mike.
who thinks will is special? mike.
how am i certain? well that’s the crazy part of all this, because it’s handed to us during the very speech that follows— will’s.
why does it feel like we see mike’s face more than will’s during his veiled confession?
because WILL IS TALKING ABOUT MIKE.
and when will is talking about himself, the camera is on him:
so tell me why this:
is any different. we’re shown both will and mike’s reactions to each other an excessive and (mainly in mike’s case) almost unnecessary amount of times. not because of random artistic choice or fully to emphasize on will’s heartbreak or mike’s intent listening, but to stress that they are literally talking about each other when the words apply.
if mike is obviously not thinking about el (because if he would he’d be looking at the painting seeing as that’s the only physical thing he has of her presently) and instead looking at will like this WHEN HE ISN’T EVEN LOOKING:
then it’s entirely possible that will leaning in so he’s properly positioned to be drowned in beautiful light as mike goes on about how he was one of the first people to realize that “el” was special is entirely evident and intentional.
this is just my take as a learning film student, not sure if it’s controversial or not but this was fun!
