Would you happen to have a list of Paul Drake's employees? I'm just sort of curious as to how many names we have, and how many were mentioned a second time.

Avatar

I do! I'm currently doing a rewatch of the series with a specific focus on the Paul Drake Detective Agency. With each season, I'm creating a list of operatives, as well as noting further details on the workings of the agency (this could include: spy tech used, contacts, investigative methods, etc.).

The general overview of the Paul Drake Detective Agency is that Paul canonically employs operatives (including contracted operatives/contacts) all around the world-- including North America, South America, Australia, Guam, and Europe.

In the TV series, there's dozens of listed operatives that Paul employs. In the books, there's implications that the number is far greater, with Paul having enough operatives to work on other numerous cases while also being able to spare 20 operatives on one singular case.

My method for counting and tracking operatives in the television series is this: I only count operatives who are mentioned by name, make visual appearances (named or unnamed), or who are identified in some way beyond a name (i.e. an operative in Portland, Oregon).

I do not count instances where Perry might say, "Get one of your operatives on it now," or when Paul says, "I have two operatives working on it now."

With all that said, here is my list:

Operatives at the Paul Drake Detective Agency in S1 (Names with asterisks mean that they made appearances by name or in person in both S1 and S2)

Frank Faulkner* Ralph Faulkner* - Yes, there are two Faulkners! See here for details. See here for Ralph's S2 appearance Nora Kelly - see here for more information about Nora Don Gregory -a new agent Paul is helping to get his footing John O'Brien Harvey Julian (more here) Herb Mulligan - (operative based in Portland, Oregon. (Paul mentions specifically that he trained Herb. This is worthy to note because Paul directly trains the operatives who work for him, even if they’re in other states.) Pat Harvey Ron Jacks _____ Henderson _____ Jarret ____ Davis* (more here) _____ Ralston Unnamed Operative with Frank Faulkner during a tail job Unnamed Operative in Seattle, Washington Unnamed Operative in Portland, Oregon Unnamed Operative in Fairbanks, Alaska

Operatives at the Paul Drake Detective Agency in Season 2

____ Wallis ____ Harris ____ Burroughs ____ Walsh Blanche Atkins (more here) Harry Klein (more here) _____ Andrews (more here) _____ Storm (contracted, more here) Unnamed operative (onscreen appearance during a stakeout, see here) Unnamed operative (onscreen appearance sitting in passenger seat of Paul's Thunderbird during stakeout) Unnamed operative (served subpoenas)

Additional Employees at the Paul Drake Detective Agency (all from S1)

Margo - Secretary (more here, here, here, and here) Unnamed Secretary- In one of the reports on a case, the secretary at the agency who typed up the report initialed “kh” at the bottom of the page, suggesting that Paul employs a secretary with these initials. Unnamed Switchboard Operator for the Paul Drake Detective Agency Exchange

Total Employees listed in S1 and S2: 31 employees.

I also can share a few other links relating to the operatives at the Paul Drake Detective Agency that might be helpful.

For an in depth season by season breakdown of who is employed at the Paul Drake Detective Agency and what the Agency does, these links will be helpful to you:

I did finish my rewatch of S3 and am currently in the process of compiling the Season 3 Review. There were new operatives featured in S3, as well as reoccurring operatives from S1 and/or S2. That info will be forthcoming just as soon as I finish compiling everything!

You also might find my &. Paul Drake Detective Agency tag helpful, as I use this tag for posts exclusively related to the employees at the Paul Drake Detective Agency (this includes: operatives, contacts, phone operators, secretaries, etc.). In these posts, I do breakdowns of what the operatives are doing in the television series.

Other posts that might be interesting to you are posts that focus specifically on how Paul Drake runs his agency, which are here, here, here, here, here.

Another set of posts explores how Paul and his operatives establish connection and support to his clients here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here.

Another relevant tag for more details on Paul's operatives include my posts highlighting the female private investigators Paul employs. I go in depth about the social implications of the time period (book and tv series-- so 1930s through 1960s) and commentary on Paul using his privilege to regularly employ and triumph women private investigators at a time where the job was male-dominated. Because of the Paul Drake Detective Agency's success and world-wide renown, there's also implications of the agency setting a precedent for other agencies to follow. That tag is &. Paul Drake Feminist Ally Meta. While there are many posts in that tag, the key summary review on this topic can be found here

Hope this helps! Paul, his operatives, and the Paul Drake Detective Agency in general is quite seriously my favorite aspect to the series, so I'm always happy to chat about this topic in greater detail!

Rooftop follow up (original "Twin" ending)

I was thinking more about original ending, but the same question applies to  lesser degree with episode as aired:  What does Molly know about what happened on the roof?  What about the rest of Fi's gang?

Fi, of course, knows more than Rachel or Jack. She's the only one that saw the Trinity or talked to Rick.  But Rachel and Jack know about the locked door (trap nature, especially Rachel, as she knew about the messages) and about Fi hanging on the ledge and being lifted up by something.

So, what do they tell others?  Previously, Fi would have been likely to tell everyone at least part of it (she's been known to omit instances of physical danger, but talking to her father is too big not to mention).  But her mom has decided to end the tour, and, of course, now she knows that Mom knows more about supernatural stuff and pretends not to. So would she be inclined simply to not tell Molly, in order to increase the likelihood of going back on the road again.  And, per original ending, to fulfill her destiny to stop those evil forces?  I guess the issue is if (for a time), she would become more closed off and keep more (supernatural-oriented) secrets from her mom to pursue that cause.  A distance growing before closing later in season 3?  But if she's not telling mom, she might not want to put it on her website, which Molly could easily read.  Though she could still tell Clu, Ryan, Candy, etc. in their group chats, I guess.  Does she tell Jack and Rachel about rick, even?

Jack has  history of keeping things from Molly if he thinks they'll distress her, so it would be on-brand for him not to tell her about Fi almost dying.  It's also a pattern of his to deny, deny, deny, so he might just say the wind blew door, she fell, she managed to climb up, no matter how little sense it made.  On the other hand, he also belittles her beliefs - I don't think he'd go so far in lashing out to say she got dad's spirit "killed" by chasing her goals - even besides the cruelty being too far for him, it would only support the idea her version of events is real, which he doesn't like to do.  I'm not sure what it would take to bring Jack around to supporting Fi's goals with regards to the supernatural, instead of just rescuing her she gets in trouble acting on them.  Do you think this is it or it times out better later on?

Rachel's the adult in the mix. The one I can't predict a reaction for.  We just don't know her as much.  But adults are generally less likely to keep these sort of secrets from parents.  And we haven't seen her support Fi's interest in the past like Melinda did. And when did do so here, Fi almost died.  I think the thing most likely to prevent her from taking action to make sure Fi never gets in this kind of danger again is if she believes Rick says this is what Fi was meant to do and that she'll somehow be okay.  Or, I guess, if she goes into denial and says stress got to her, it was an accident, etc.

Just odds and ends - feel free to answer what piques your interest and ignore the rest

  1. Money - with 6 hit albums and Rick and Molly writing songs (and I would think owning publishing, since Irene is very good at her job), I was thinking Molly ought to at least have tens of millions of dollars. Though we see nothing indicating that. Thoughts?
  2. Do you have any good ideas on how to incorporate Atlantis/the cheese wheel in the final battle? I'm contemplating a headcanon where Rebecca's families are genetically Atlantean. I just kind of like the idea of her being able to have a world in-sync with aging and have a real life and keep connections and so on.
  3. Any ideas for future careers for Fi, Jack, and Clu? I've thought about urban planning or child psychologist for Jack - something helping people or making the world a better place. Fi could totally pursue tech, as she likes that, but she loves the supernatural and fighting evil. And, with her tech-ness, maybe long-term that could end up with website/channel about those thing while she did some traveling and world-saving. Clu's a difficult one for me - we've seen him try to make a documentary once and I guess John Kane could give him entry into the field. But I'm not sure I regard that as more than a passing fancy.
  4. After the end - original season 3 version: Rick is back from the dead. I know Fi would want the whole world to know the truth of what happened. That would make things very different that our world. If we keep the SW-world outwardly seeming like the real world for the majority, then they are going to have to come up with a story about Rick. Any ideas on what it could be?

Very interesting thoughts. I had not thought about wraiths at all, and that is a very interesting way to go with him. The idea of Rick having journals - not as much a fan. Too easy for Fi to get information by finding them. We know he left the magic book with Melinda, but he doesn't seem to have shared any real findings with anyone, though he made no secrets of his paranormal interest.

I absolutely definitely agree about Candy, Ryan, etc. believing her even before she brings Rick back. She has, IMO, been unknowingly raising her "army" along this tour. I think they need to be involved for the story to work. Though their involvement may be limited to using Tad's software (Jack and other regulars having a larger role to play) - someone brought this up (in regards to original plans and such) and technology is so entwined in this show (methods Rick used to communicate, method Fi uses to communicate with other allies) in some ways that some sort of energy to fight the big bad evil that wants to "conquer and subjugate" just works to me. Tech used to combine the forces (of the humans, aliens, Atlateans) to fight that evil.

Fi is the one meant to do that - should that be before or after she gets her father back? She needs to be the leader, and I'm afraid his presence could detract from that. Then again, if Molly and John are on-board, then we already have other adults in play. Still have no idea how the actual final battle goes down.

I don't agree Fi is bad a keeping secrets - she kept Bigfoot a secret just fine. She just doesn't want to keep most of these things secret.

I don't know how much Molly could spend if her addiction is just alcohol - it's a lot cheaper than drugs. But then, one can buy a lot of things while one is drunk.

I never got the feeling her addiction lasted that long (from Chrysalis outline, she didn't expect Jack to remember, so it seems it must have ended when he was still quite young).

If she was worth 10 million, she could have had 300k a year easily on pretty conservative investments (and it would keep growing at that withdrawal rate), so that's upper-middle class (without a job). Unless she invested poorly or panic sold. Could have done that before Rick died, really (1987 stock market crash). So much depends on how much you think she had to start.

Bruce Springsteen apparently earned 56 million in 1987. Now that's gross earnings (before agents' fees, expenses, taxes, etc.). But a third of that (agent and manager alone get 25%-30%) would be 18.67 million, then 2/3 of that to the Phillips is 12.4 million (though agent wouldn't get a percent of royalties, just concerts, I think - tried to look this stuff up, but all the information online is recent, not 40 years ago standards). Knock it down by half because Springsteen was the highest earner of the year so 6.2 million. Knock off another 55% for taxes (huge estimation there), so 2.79 million per year. They had 8+ years as great sellers, but taxes were higher earlier and of course they were going to spend money on things like the house, as you said.

Hell, apparently in 1991, New Kids on the Block earned 115 million. But I remember their popularity among the 5th-grade-set. I expect there was significant merchandise involved.

Do you think the PKB just got forgotten about quickly after they disbanded? Because if re-releases were still being done, they'd still be making money. There are royalties for radio play, too.

I think I put too much thought into this.

I've been looking up medium and long-term health consequences of bone marrow transplants, too - again, something where I have to try to find older information, rather than newer. I may fixate on the wrong things sometimes.

When exactly did Molly have time to attend college?! Even if you use the odd character timeline season 3 created for her it doesn't fit in. Was she attending college WHILE touring with PKB and having babies? Don't get me wrong I know a career/parenthood and college is possible...but I really don't see how its possible for her in these circumstances. Especially when online/remote learning won't really be a thing at the time. To me she she wasn't a big fan of school and the second she graduated high school she hightailed it out of there.

Honestly, I tend to be of the mind that she left at more like 16 (or even 15, right after she won the contest, if she got a record contract then) and didn't finish highschool (got her GED).

I mean, given that Rachel said she was 41 in "Twin", so we know Rick was too, he would have been 19ish when the PKB was formed in 1978 (and all three of them were all big enough names for it to be called a supergroup). Molly's the same age, so it seems unlikely she waited until graduating high school to start her career.

Her relationship with her folks was so difficult. Interestingly enough, we know that she fought with both parents when she was young, but it seems like things got better with her mother.

Interestingly, Ned left home at 16. And we didn't seem him mention his folks when he went back to his childhood home. Of course, they could just live elsewhere now, but he could also have a bad/non-existent relationship with them.

So Weird AU continuation - Annie

While I've recently rewatched seasons 1 and 2 (and still mostly agree with the firm character impressions I had of the Phillips family back then), I haven't rewatched season 3. And I don't remember much about Annie. Obviously, I remember her talent and her panther protector. But I don't recall her personality all that well - her strengths and flaws.

I'm playing with the idea of incorporating her into an AU headcanon of mine (taking original ending of "Twin"). I never write anything, because actual plotting is beyond me, but I like coming up with broad arc ideas and occasionally sort synopsis-of-episodes sort of thing. I'm trying to think of the best way to incorporate her. I do think she needs to be before I have Fi bring Rick back and before defeating big-bad-evil. Mostly because her parents leaving her there immediately after Rick comes back is too weird/unlikely (major upheaval in the family even if her parents believe whatever story the clan cooks up). But also helping take down the big bad would give her some cred.

Then, once Jack was gone (sorry, but he is going to go off to college - so my big battle is on a timer to be done before that), she and Carey can be supporting character for Fi, who continues to do good things and fight evil. Though how the heck I'm going to keep Rick from getting involved (keep it to the "kids") is another still-unanswered question.

The reveal of the story for how exactly Annie got her protector and who it is is a bit bothersome (mystic native, guy following her around, lifelong debt) - probably will be some alteration to that. Keep the panther, but change the story.  Probably keep Peru.  Can't decide if I need to put an expiration date on protection - the stakes are lower when Annie can't really be attacked by supernatural forces. Plus it opens us up for a storyline of her having to adapt to that risk now that she knows those kinds of dangers exist.  Could "kill" it off in the big battle.  Or have it complete its mission/goal/whatever and move on.

The Phillips family dynamic is so worth discussing. So many good parts, and a few bad ones, too. I don't really think of this as normal siblings ragging on each other. I mean, certainly I think the dynamic Jack (and Molly, but expressed differently) have with Fi and Fi's interest in the paranormal is so tied up with Rick and what Fi is too young to remember. Jack is emotionally very aggressive and bullying about it, really. But then he goes and saves her multiple times.

I don't like modern comics very much. I don't read them. Partially because I like reading in some kind of order (so I usually end up having to go back to at least the 60s), but also because comics don't have as many words anymore. And as someone who reads all the time (I read books more at school, but I read wikipedia and wikis and fanfic and blogs and everything at home), I love comics with lots of words. The more the better!

So 60s and 70s comics, jammed full of words make for the best reading experience. I don't know why comics ditched the words! Because pictures are all well and good, but ya gotta have words! These things should be like miniature novels, so I have something to look forward to! Unless it's a lighthearted humour comic, I want words! Humour comics are the only modern comics I might be willing to make exceptions for!

Avatar

I'm with you. On CBR, we've had discussions and several people find old comics too verbose - they find the dialog clunky or over-expositionary too sometimes, but sometimes just too wordy. I, on the other hand, feel like there's just way too little content/story in a modern comic. Sure, part of this is writing for the TPBs and so it takes forever for stories to finish sometimes. But part of it giant splash pages with two sentences.

I miss thought bubbles, too. Though there are narration boxes now and I enjoy those too, they do limit you to one perspective at a time.

Though, I gotta admit, the images for thought bubbles for '90s Impulse were amazing - just perfect for the character.

DC has so many obscure characters. One of these now obscure character is Dr. Terrence Thirteen, the Ghost-Breaker! A man whose ancestors were persecuted for being magical (when in reality they were merely more progressive and scientifically inventive than the people around them, according to wikipedia), Doctor Thirteen now travels the world with his wife Marie as they debunk the supernatural and save naive, superstitious innocents from getting swindled by con-artists hiding behind the "supernatural". Doctor Thirteen is now seen as a joke character. He's the man who refuses to believe in the supernatural, even when it looks him in the eyes. But that was never true!

Terrence Thirteen is not a bigot, he's actually the opposite! He's an honourable man concerned about the dangers of hoaxes! Sure, the man used to think the Phantom Stranger was wasn't really a Phantom! But that's because he thought he was a con-artist preying on people! Personally, i think Doctor Thirteen and The Phantom Stranger are probably decent friends now that they've both worked together on cases. That's my personal headcanon, at least. But really: put more respect on the name of Terrence Thirteen! He's an interesting character!

Avatar
tzigone

Oh, I agree. In early Phantom Stranger, of course, he was a debunker, too (while also being supernatural).

They did have some more friendly moments later. I have a whole headcanon where Traci Thirteen (more of the post-COIE version from 2006 Blue Beetle) was the daughter of a colleague of PS and he arranged her adoption by Terry and Marie.

I do hate how skeptics always end up blind idiots/absolute jokes in a certain kind of fiction

Also find it funny that in the 1970s, Thirteen was enraged by being called "Terry" by Phantom Stranger when back in his origin story, it was a made a point of that his father gave him a name with 13 characters (Terry Thirteen is 13 characters, and Terrence Thirteen is not).

KF: TLC episode order

I'm recently back into the fandom. I was on FuRenagades years ago. I know it was discussed back then how neither airing nor production order made sense for viewing order, but I can't recall if there was ever a consensus among fans as to what the best order to watch the episodes in was. So, if anyone (even a long while later) sees this and has a suggested order, I'd love to hear it.

For the first season, I'm quite interested in when each character first saw Caine doing the the impossible/supernatural (which really amped up in later seasons). Other interests, too. I'm not sure you can really track the progression of relationships so well in this type of show, but I'd like to see if one order is better than another for it. Same for Peter's character progression.

Well, she’s not Sutton yet, of course.

As someone who only saw her in Young Justice, THAT’S HER?!

Yeah. Which may be a reason I wasn't so fond of the YJ version of her - didn't really seem like the same character. I mean, I know she didn't have many appearances in the older comics, but there isn't much resemblance in look or attitude. And I don't think the age was consistent with how old she'd be, either.

KF:TLC post-series (fic) thoughts

I was thinking about post-series and things I'd like to see.

Obviously, Paul's return would be a cool thing. I've read several variations on this. I feel like thematically, he needs to return of his own volition once he's defeated his inner demons. But that doesn't make as exciting a story as his life in danger, I know. I do think it needs to be a little bit - not happen right on the heels of Peter leaving the force.

Avatar

KFTLC crossover thought

Okay, previously I mentioned a Champions/Scarecrow and Mrs. King crossover because they were spies. But today I was looking at more old shows and old fanvids online and thought of Kung Fu: The Legend Continues.

I thought it would be interesting with The Champions because of the types of abilities Caine has and sort of tying in the Champions mystical Tibetans with Shambala, even with very different methods/roads to such abilities. Tying them in together could be very interesting to me.

I was thinking of this all happening in the 1990s. But it could happen in the late 1960s/early 1970s with a young Caine (and very young Peter, if he wasn't back at the temple). Or we could use Paul Blaisdell - he used to be a mercenary and might travel in similar circles.

Actually, with KF:TLC's penchant for flashbacks, we could have them meet in the past and now.

Could crossover all three shows, using Simms' son, Philip and/or Jamie and the Champions kiddos, but really, it's their parents all the fans care about.

Gaaaaaaaaah, I apologize in advance for my dodgy, dodgy memory!  I haven’t rewatched this series since I was, like, 14.

favorite male character: The only one I actually remember was Lee, so we’ll go with Lee Stetson!  Which, jfc, that name was supposed to be a cover, but TERRIBLE.

favorite female character:  Amanda!  Seriously, I tried to convince my babysitter to name one of the cows Amanda because SHE WAS GREAT, and was totally destroyed to find out that there was ALREADY a cow named Amanda.  I was also crabby we couldn’t have an Amanda Jr. and I’m still convinced that was bogus.

least favorite character:  I have zero recollection of the boss guy, so we’ll go with him.

prettiest character:  No question, Francine.  She was SO GLAMOROUS.  Especially to ~3year old me.  Also, holy crap, I just realized The Mother TOTALLY LIED TO ME about Scarecrow and Mrs. King being cancelled when we were back in Iowa!  GDI, I was CONVINCED that there was a tv movie of this show, when really it was just an ad for a new episode that I didn’t get to SEE!  UGH, THE MOTHER.

funniest character: I always thought the kids were super funny.  Admittedly, that was mostly because I was tiny when I saw it the first time.  And when I rewatched it, Francine got promoted to funniest.  I kind of love Francine.

favorite season:  Uuuuuuh. Probably the last one?  THEY GOT MARRIED! (And damn, well done Kate Jackson for keeping it together when she had cancer.)

favorite episode: The one on the cruise ship!  Because I remember it!

favorite romantic ship: Lee/Amanda!  THEY WERE SO CUTE.

favorite family ship: Totally Amanda and Dotty.  I LOVED Amanda’s mom!  And it was kind of awesome how Dotty called Amanda on a lot of her shit.  Because, realistically, she deserved it.  I mean, becoming Spy!Lady! while having two pre-teen/teenagers at home?  And being the custodial parent?  :|  But still!  There was real care there!

favorite friend ship:  Oh, my god, the snarky bitchfest that was Amanda and Francine MADE MY LIFE.  And how Francine and Amanda kind of bonded over time and grew to respect each other a lot.

worst ship: Maybe Amanda/her ex?  IDK, I don’t even remember there being any bullshit push-pull romantic stuff.  I even freaking loved Francine/Lee because Francine is THE BEST of all things (also Amanda) and her being all “UGH, LEE, WHY.” was pretty rad.

I'm a fellow fan who also liked Francine as well as Amanda. I liked Billy, too, but like way less than the Lee, Amanda, and Francine. I think I'm fonder of the kids than most people, but I was a kid when I first watched. Well, I was a kid when I first remembered watching (Family Channel), but I expect my mom watched when I was an even younger kid, but I only cared about cartoons then.

And yeah, I love that that there was no romantic vibe with Amanda and her ex. I really also like that the show took the road of Joe being a really great guy and both Joe and Amanda being part of the relationship failing. Later, when reading fic on the mailing lists, I used to get really annoyed and how many writers wanted to cast Joe as "the bad guy" or have him to try to break up Lee and Amanda by wanting her back, which is so not the way the things were in the show.

How do you feel on Lee and Amanda having kids. Giving them a little girl has been popular in fiction. I'm against it. First, it too often has a vibe of relegating Jamie and Phillip to inferior-kid status (she'll grow up to be an agent and do amazing things while they don't) and secondly, I don't think Amanda should have more kids. Either she (quite unfairly) foists a lot of responsibility off on Dottie (who should be getting to relax more now that the boys are older) or she and/or Lee needs to quit/cut back doing what they are doing for the baby's sake. Thirdly, I just don't get the vibe of Amanda wanting to start over with a baby at this point - I think she's fulfilled with love, kids, and job already (and wouldn't want to sacrifice the job) and I don't see Lee having a particular desire for a baby, either.

Best way for Ramon and Siroc to discover Jacque's secret?

Just building my own headcanon continuation in this dead fandom. I have ideas for Louis declaring himself his own prime minister and Mazarin's downfall and such.

But I haven't decided when/how Sirco and Ramon should find out Jacques is Jacqueline Roget and wanted for killing a member of the Cardinal's guard (last episode is totally disregarded because of it's structure and ending).

Back in the day, people always had Siroc figure it out because he was the smart one, but canonically, Ramon was the one who noticed odd things and seemed most likely to figure it out, IMO. And, of course, there's a difference in a secret being figured out v. one being found out and I was kinda hoping for some kind of figured out.

Ideas from anyone still following this fandom?

Sometimes I wonder re: your posts wondering about an AU Jason Titans, if a Post-Crisis version of Rena (the og Jason girlfriend) who was reinvented and might've taken up being some kind of heroine in such a universe could be interesting as some OC. It's a wonder nobody in DC canon's tried to work her back into his history with the different kind of backstory meldings that have gone on, and also the whole Nocturna deal, but then I worry they'd kill her off or corrupt her.

I vaguely remember Rena. At least I remember a girl he wasn't going to interact with as Robin because he didn't want to be his own competition (genre-savvy kid) - was that Rena? While seeing her again in the world that never was where he didn't get killed would be cool, my very first thought is not to make her a hero. I really, strongly, want heroes to have more civilian supporting casts and not to be so insular, only socializing among themselves. But I don't actually remember Rena's story, so she may be well suited to heroism.

But yeah, getting turned evil, killed, or both is far too common a destiny for supporting characters.
