My experience growing up as an unusually detached boy, among other boys, revealed to me that the ones who used violence had not learned better strategies, healthier outlets, for dealing with negative emotions.  Mom was very good about that, and very up-to-date on child psychology and techniques of rearing.  Not that I imagine you care one whit about my experiences, or about the emotional lives of males.  But if you want women to be safer from maladjusted men, this is a part of it.

It’s interesting you said the other thing, though, because while overt violence is typically thought of as a masculine attribute, passive aggression and manipulation is usually taken to be a more feminine form of malsociality.  Obviously neither of those are completely true... but they’re true enough to wound and scar people for the rest of their lives.  I’m sorry if you’ve been hurt by bad experiences.

Men not expressing or being allowed to express their feelings directly leads to violence and angry outbursts. I don’t understand. My parents’ gift to each other was a washer/dryer… they’re expensive appliances and having functional ones is such a convenience and relief compared to going to the laundromat.

We live within our means, and a lot of times we have to buy second hand to have what we need…. as far as Christmas presents go I’d rather have something I can use, literally everyday, than something that loses its sheen and appeal after one month and just becomes a ‘thing’ 

And if you and your partner have discussed this being appropriate, then that’s totally fine! No one is saying that’s wrong. It’s also different if it’s viewed as a gift for the family/couple (or if you live alone it’s a little different too.)

Still, there’s a difference when you just give a woman a vacuum without any discussion or knowledge of family dynamics. For example, my grandmother on my dad’s side, always gives the housekeeping gifts to my mother. My parents are supposed to do equal share of housework, especially because they both work the same amount of hours.

However, there is an outdated expectation that women will do the majority of the housework. (And it’s not fully “outdated” because actually it is common for women to do more housework despite working the same amount of hours but that’s a whole other mess.)

Either way, this sort of stuff plays on the idea that women do housework and men are the breadwinners. It’s the family needs it, it’s usually best to give it as a joint thing in my opinion. Many women find it demeaning or frustrating to get household appliances based around cleaning.

It’s of course all about context. If a family has had the same shitty washer dryer for 20 years and the wife is always complaining about it, then the husband getting a great appliance for the family, especially if they’re on the lower end of the economic structure, is a nice gesture.
