“According to the CDC 9683 died in the United States with only having COVID-19 listed on their death certificate.”
The rest of the 161,392 deaths were people who died with COVID-19, but not from COVID-19.
Yeah. It’s called comorbidity and has been a valid statistic for measuring conditions that cause death through interaction with another condition literally forever.
The point is that without Covid entering the fray, they wouldn’t be dead right now. Which means Covid killed them, even if it did so through interaction. So yes, they did die from Covid-19; OP just apparently doesn’t know how medical reporting works.
This is about what was listed on their death certificate - it’s about differentiating who happened to have COVID and died from heart failure and who actually died because they got COVID. Just because someone had COVID when they died doesn’t mean it caused their death.
Counting these deaths accurately is important because we’re basing policy on them. If the data doesn’t differentiate between the two, we need better data.
Also comorbidity refers to having two conditions at the same time, not necessarily dying from either. Comortality refers to someone dying of multiple causes.
