One thing I’d love to watch is a multi-part documentary on the development of the original Pokémon games and Pokémania.
Of course, it should definitely be more than just a straightforward “Satoshi Tajiri liked bugs, they made Red and Green, they made an anime, and then it came to America”. If there’s one thing I’ve learned during the past year or so, is that the development of Pokémon was not straightforward like media coverage circa 2000 would have you believe. Like how Japanese Yellow version, and the entire American half of Gen 1 happened well after Gold and Silver was already in development, and how ideas cross-pollinated between the games, the anime, and the TCG.
So personally I think that in order to tell the whole story of Pokémon’s early days, you’d have to talk about both the first and the second generation, since they’re so closely tied to each other. (Probably the release of Crystal version would be a good cutoff.) And of course, lest we forget, the 4Kids dub. Where would we be without it?
Honestly I think this version is creepier than the original.
It’s like it’s saying “We’re so HAPPY here we got rid of all the dead bodies and now we have radio KEEP SMILING 8D”.
Personally I think most of the Pokémon from the proto that changed later were changed for the better, but I think we can all agree that proto-Politoed objectively looks more like the rest of the Poliwag line than the final version
I mean, even if you prefer one version over the other, y’know?
A little YouTube playlist of music from Pokémon GSC, focusing on Kanto.
Think of it as a sort of alternate version of RBY...
I’m sort of embarrased to admit, that despite being a Pokémon fan since 1999, I still have yet to actually beat any Gen I games. I’m sure it mainly has to do with the fact that I kept trying and failing to beat Brock using Pikachu. The awful sound of Pikachu fainting over and over can really screw with a 10-year-old’s emotions. I imagine the one time I accidentally erased my save on Red didn’t help either.
On the other hand, I have beaten Silver (sadly, like most Gen II games, the save was lost), and Sapphire. I don’t actually own Gold or Ruby. (I do have a bootleg of Crystal though... doesn’t save either.)

Then this video is for you.
I’m not too sure how many people know just how exciting it was waiting for and finally experiencing Johto for the first time. I’m not sure how they might capture that same spirit again. Hoenn was great, but soon afterward, the series felt like it was just adding things for the sake of having more, and more of the same. I don’t get that feeling of newness. It’s more like “here it is again, except it isn’t!”. Pokémon was amazing already, so when it came to revealing all the new creatures and places to go and things to experience… suddenly it wasn’t just humble Kanto, the Pokémon world opened up and expanded wide to new possibilities. There was a whole world out there, vast and waiting, and everything in it was new yet familiar. Johto was lush and green, traditional, even more in harmony with nature than Kanto was. It’s a whole new world we live in It’s a whole new way to see
Even though I’ll forever be a Kanto kid, Johto still means a lot me. (See here for more on that...)
This captures that spirit perfectly.
You know, if you don’t know what the heck “Mystery Gift” is, the little girl in the Goldenrod Dept. Store can be really creepy.
Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal soundtrack - Viridian City
...And just about every other town in Kanto.
I'm sure I'm not alone in this, but I'm probably more familiar with the nighttime version of Johto's battle music than I ought to be.
