#alvin and the chipmunks – @tymime on Tumblr

I’ve shared this album before, but I’ve just listened to it again, and was reminded of just how good it is.

On the surface it just looks like a Chipmunks knock-off... and while there are sped-up vocals and mousey lyrics, the CD’s chockful of clever arrangements in different styles, including pop punk, spy surf, latin, and even Celtic folk. The vocals are very good, syncopated and expressive, and their version of “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” is almost sincerely touching. I say give the whole thing a listen.

For a long time I wondered “why does this dumb song from this weird ‘90s anti-drug cartoon give me FEELS?”- and then I found out who wrote it, which explains a lot, really.

You gotta hand it to ‘em for managing to make a bouncy ragtime-y number and a sentimental ballad out of the same melody.

First heard this last year while listening to my one of my mom’s cassette tapes of a radio broadcast- a rhythm ‘n’ blues/rock 'n’ roll show from the '80s I think. Among them was this little surprise.

The more I listen to it, the cuter it gets. Can’t you just see a couple of scruffy skunks sitting around a tiny piano while the all-black studio band rocks in the background?

Spice Mice - “The Twelve Days of Christmas”

I discovered this album by accident- despite being essentially an obscure Chipmunks imitation, it’s unusually inventive with it’s rock and folk arrangements of familiar carols. Give it a listen, says I.
