Thus far I am having fun but am also ridiculously amused by the occasional Moon Hunters references.
Everything I know about this game going in: Keanu Reeves thinks I’m awesome. *^.^*
So I’ve been sitting here for like two days wanting to make a post about this game and not knowing how, because everybody should play it and that’s about it.
It’s an engrossing story-heavy, RPG-lite investigative graphical adventure game with light (read: logical) puzzle solving and fabulous companion characters.
The story goes that the player character (you can play a dude or a dame, pick one of three backgrounds that sometimes impacts how you interact with the world and how the world interacts with you, and name the character) is recruited into a group of paranormal experts after being possessed by a demon, and subsequently you wander around NYC with your new underground co-workers solving supernatural problems.
So... my best emergent gameplay story out of Far Cry 5 to date:
I see shrine nestled in a little valley. I start over to destroy shrine. While I’m running towards it, a skunk comes running out of bushes and sprays the cultist guarding it.
...
...considering I seem to be playing as an inexplicable force of nature running around with a bear and a mountain lion, that fits the theme nicely.
The Old Gods have not left this place.
I finally sat myself down to play the Switch release of Trials of Mana this weekend.
I love this game so much.
I was genuinely worried I’d hate the translation. I can be finicky when it comes to little details. I actually really, really love it - whoever handled it either knew what they were building on, or Square-Enix has really codified their internal materials. Or both. There are still a couple of things that annoy me (Once more, the best translation for Charlotte would to have her speak simply, darnit!) and a handful of things that left me scratching my head in terms of why did they decide to translate it like that? (Shadow Zed...?)
But... overall... this is so very close to the version of SD3 I always wanted. Someone did a really good job with the translation and localization.
I was apparently mistaken about a particular small detail for a very long time now, but it was always headcanon and I’m keeping it since there’s nothing saying it can’t be a thing.
What can I say about this game other than it is a fantastic mountain lion pet simulator. You run around the mountains and woods with your pet mountain lion, scritch your mountain lion behind the ears, and call your mountain lion a good cat.
There's some flavor text about some doomsday cultists or something, but that's only an excuse to set it all in Montana aka mountain lion territory, and also to give your pet mountain lion life enrichment to prey on and play around with in her natural environment.
...I seem to have gotten lost on the way to Montana.
...I’ve loved Fatal Frame 3 for over a decade, it’s my go-to comfort survival horror title and yet...
...it’s taken me this bloody long to get the Yuu-Rei joke.
Solve Mysteries As A Gang Of Cats In This Open World Game
“I don’t know if you’ve heard, but everybody wants to be a cat. Apparently a cat’s the only cat who knows where it’s at, see. With that in mind, I don’t think there have been nearly enough video games that let us play as felines.”
Clearly, this is a sentiment the developers of new indie title Peace Island have taken to heart, as the open world game is all about you taking on the role of a cat to solve mysteries and uncover the secrets of the missing humans. There’s not one part of that sentence I didn’t enjoy.
Peace Island is the work of creator Eric Blumrich and a small team of devs, which apparently includes alumni from Prune and a little-known title called Grand Theft Auto V. The game’s Patreon page describes it as “an open-world, story-driven adventure game, currently under development for the PC, Mac, and Oculus VR system.”
The developers promise an ambitious sounding mix of science fiction, alternative history, and mystery, as players take control of the nine cats who live on the island, after waking up to find their human companions have vanished.
Peace Island will forgo combat in favour of an experience that focuses on puzzle solving, discovery, and exploration – so expect a title more in the vein of The Witness, but with cats. It also sounds as if we’ll be able to experience ” multiple divergent storylines” as we approach the “ultimate decision” – are the humans worth bringing back?
