Honestly it’s moments like this when it really hammers in how much of a dick move forcing Megs to renounce everything he’d ever stood for, was. Not only did it paint a big purple target on the back of the Lost Light, but at the same time it ignores why people followed Megatron in the first place.

Even Alpha Trion outright states that the Decepticons were a reaction, a course correction, to the increasingly dystopian Functionist Senate. An extreme response and an ugly one to a situation that was steadily becoming worse with no end in sight. And yes, they definitely went too far and struck out at other worlds, but they started with better intentions.

It’s why I consider this incarnation of Megatron to be a tragic and fallen hero rather than a consummate villain; his story is that of a man who paved his path to hell with equal parts pain and good intentions, and at the end of it he’s shown a mirror and recoils in horror from what he’s become. But it’s never one occurrence, as over and over again he finds himself confronted by this hell of his own making.

And Tarn? Tarn is one of his proverbial demons, a warped image of everything he once stood for, corrupted by the cruelty and relentlessness that grew over time. But at the same time, Tarn is in his own way selfless; having sacrificed his innocence and ther lives of many to the cause that he believed so utterly in.

And he’s not the only one. He’s just the face of it all - quite literally, given that his very face is a mask based on their imagery. He ends up representing the countless numbers of people who were told that everything they valued and fought and suffered for was for nothing.

It all goes back to my overall take on the Autobot/Decepticon conflict having been extended and amplified by the fact that neither side took the time to understand one another. The Autobots see the Decepticons as a chaotic force that conquers for the sake of conquest, whilst the Decepticons see the Autobots as a continuation of the old and corrupt order. Both assumptions might be partially correct, but ultimately they belie a fundamental ignorance as to the truth of the matter.
