Lest we incorrectly assume that the United Kingdom stands alone in expanding surveillance power, today a controversial rule change granting the FBI much broader authority to remotely hack into computers comes on line.

Rule 41 of the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure was updated earlier in the year, but didn’t come into force until today, which gave Congress time to stop the rule change if it so wanted. This update to the rule allows federal law enforcement to seek permission to hack into large numbers of computers in any jurisdiction with a single judge’s permission. Before today a judge could only authorize hacking into computers within his or her own district.

What’s the big deal about this? Understand that this isn’t just about hacking into computers of suspected criminals. It’s about hacking into any computer that is connected to any sort of criminal investigation, and that potentially (and very likely) includes completely innocent parties who have had their own computers hacked and/or unwittingly installed malware to give a hacker access.

Tech companies and privacy activists have been critical of the broad scope of the rule change and are concerned about the potential consequences. From USA Today:

Opponents of the new rule, including Google and other big tech companies, say it would hurt crime victims twice by letting the government hack them after they’ve already been hit by criminal hackers. The government could potentially damage victims’ computers and smartphones and destroy their data, critics say.
Federal agents must make “reasonable efforts” under the new rule to tell law-abiding Americans that their devices have been hacked by the government, but privacy advocates said that requirement is weak and victims may never be told about the intrusion.
“We can’t give unlimited power for unlimited hacking — putting Americans’ civil liberties at risk,” [Sen. Steve] Daines said.

Daines and a small group of bipartisan legislators had been trying in Congress to delay the rule’s implementation, but they failed.

So be warned. If you end up getting hacked somehow, the FBI may well be poking around inside your machine looking for the culprit without you even noticing.

FBI Pleads "Stop Filming Police! It's Making Them Look Bad!"

SHOW NOTES: https://www.corbettreport.com/?p=16768 For the first time in decades, violent crime is back on the rise in major urban centers across America. What's the problem? Fed-induced recession driving people into desperate poverty? Media-hyped race baiting inciting social discord? The militarization of police and tightening of the police state noose? No, it's smartphone cameras that are the culprit according to FBI director James Comey. James Corbett breaks down the propaganda and reminds you why the police are so scared of cameras.

I learned all I need to know about the police from “The Seven Five”.

More than 240 individuals—including doctors, nurses, and other licensed professionals—were arrested this week for their alleged participation in Medicare fraud schemes involving approximately $712 million in false billings.

The arrests, which began Tuesday, were part of a coordinated operation in 17 cities by Medicare Fraud Strike Force teams, which include personnel from the FBI, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the Department of Justice (DOJ), and local law enforcement. The Strike Force’s mission is to combat health care fraud, waste, and abuse.

4-29-2015 Encryption Technology and Potential U.S. Policy Responses

April 29, 2015, 2:00 p.m. in 2154 Rayburn House Office Building

HEARING PURPOSE: The hearing will examine the perspectives of law enforcement, industry, and security and privacy advocates with respect to encryption and cybersecurity for mobile electronic communication devices. HEARING BACKGROUND: In September of last year, Apple and Google, the largest mobile phone system operators in the United States, announced that they would implement increased security measures on their products in an attempt to strengthen privacy and data security.  However, these developments were met with concern from some law enforcement entities, such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation, who are concerned that an inability to access this information will hinder investigatory efforts.

tl;dr - because we went to the moon, we can develop a back door that only the good guys can use. encryption is bad, mmkay. terrorist. childrens. freedoms. liberty. other countries do it toooooooo. we’re teh good guys, remember. oh thank you law enforcement, please put your boot up here for meh to kiss.

Oh hey, an actual worthwhile quote ...

1:43:00 “... sometimes terrorist now resort to something as simple as just writing something on a piece of paper to be off the grid ... and we don’t say that companies who make paper shredders are some how protecting terrorist, correct?- Mr Lieu (making a point or winning votes?).

No one’s watching, so don’t worry about what you say. There are no “American people” watching this, they’re too busy being amazed by photos of the Orioles stadium being empty, as the Orioles play, so amazing.

Consider that on any given day, the average American going about his daily business will be monitored, surveilled, spied on and tracked in more than 20 different ways, by both government and corporate eyes and ears. A byproduct of this new age in which we live, whether you’re walking through a store, driving your car, checking email, or talking to friends and family on the phone, you can be sure that some government agency, whether the NSA or some other entity, is listening in and tracking your behavior.

I am sure the kings men also viewed their power as necessary as Comey does today. They could simply enter someone’s home and search all your papers. If you wrote anything derogatory against the king, off you went to prison. This is what inspired the American Revolution and the Fourth Amendment that there had to be a reason to search not just arbitrary desire to want to know and lets see what we can find as the NSA and FBI do today. This is the very essence of LIBERTY. You cannot pretend to be the leader of the free world with people like Comey in government.

"Newtown is the name of both a "town" and a "borough" in Connecticut, the borough being a location within the town. The Town of Newtown contains several other boroughs, including the Borough of Sandy Hook, where the infamous shooting occurred. The FBI chart shown includes a column labeled "City", but neither Newtown nor Sandy Hook is legally a "city". I'd expect that, when it comes to "towns" and "boroughs" in Connecticut, it is the "boroughs" that get listed there, not the "towns". Before I accept that this FBI listing "should" include the Sandy Hook killings but doesn't, I'd want to see the part of the chart where Sandy Hook would be listed (under "S"). It could well be that the reason those killings are not listed under Newtown is simply that they are listed under Sandy Hook instead." - bxdanny
