Putting Shang’s lessons to good use
This is a tribute illustration I was requested to make for a project in which I was lucky enough to be a guest artist :) As you’ll have guessed I’m sure, the tribute is to Disney animation studios ! As a kid and teen I loved the animated classics passionately, and as a budding artist I admired their animators to no end. This admiration has been painfully obvious in my style for a long time in the past, and it took many other influences, trips, artists and experiences to later broaden it, which enabled me to give it a much more personal turn and make it my very own :) Sadly I do not own all this wonderful merchandise XD But I really wanted to drop hints to all my favorite movies and characters. Guest starring Duncan MacLeod, my corgi, and the Treasure Planet poster that has graced my room since the day I saw the movie in theatres in 2002.
You know, one thing i like about Mulan is how Yao, Ling and Chien Po don’t really seem to care about the fact that Mulan is a girl.
I mean, when they find out, they are visibly perplexed
But even so, they rush and try to help her when she’s about to get killed
After this, they all seem quite depressed about having to leave her behind (and when Shang ignores her)
And when she shows up and takes action, they gladly follow her lead
And they even rock some crossdressing, like she did
(btw they just missed a great opportunity to make Shang crossdress here, shame on you movie)
Honestly, i just think this needs more appreciation. Because to them, Mulan didn’t have to prove herself again, just because she is a girl. She already earned their friendship and respect when she was ‘Ping’, and that was enough.
If you focus on what you left behind you will never see what lies ahead.
Ratatouille (2007)
I’ve heard a great deal about you, Fa Mulan. You stole your father’s armor, ran away from home, impersonated a soldier, deceived your commanding officer, dishonored the Chinese Army, destroyed my palace, and… you have saved us all. Mulan (1998) Dir. Barry Cook & Tony Bancroft
zootopia (2016) ☆ turn’s out, life’s a little bit more complicated than a slogan on a bumper sticker. real life is messy. we all have limitations. we all make mistakes. which means, hey, glass half full, we all have a lot in common. and the more we try to understand one another, the more exceptional each of us will be. but we have to try. so no matter what kind of animal you are, i implore you: try.
Combustion imminent? What does that mean? It means fire, Robert.
Incredibles 2 (2018)
atlantis: the lost empire (2001) ☆ oh, my decision? well, i- i think we’ve seen how effective my decisions have been. let’s re-cap. i lead a band of plundering vandals to the greatest archaeological find in recorded history, thus enabling the kidnap and/or murder of the royal family, not to mention personally delivering the most powerful force known to man into the hands of a mercenary nutcase who’s probably gonna sell it to the kaiser! have i left anything out?
