aaaaa it's so cool to see this pic is still getting fan art!
If you guys like Hexsquad Among Humans, please check out this oneshot inspired by it!
December 12-24, 2022. AT LONG LAST I finished this painting!!!! This is an acrylic painting animated in photoshop! The bottom left is the uncompressed edit of my favorite still; to the right is the original unedited scan of my painting. Each character took like 3-5 hours to render in paint, and the animation took about six hours to do (this is the first time I've animated rain btw)
After an exhausting evening, the Hexsquad dines with the Nocedas. A riveting intercultural exchange ensues! Blending dishes and customs from the Boiling Isles and the human realm... what could possibly go wrong?
TW: apple-related gore, mentions of alcohol

"But Trevor, I thought you said this chapter was 17,000 words?"
Technically, it is! However, the advice of my betas and those who've read my snippets compelled me to cut off the chapter for ease of legibility. The downside is that this was an unexpected cut and not my intention; the positive side to this is that means that Chapter 5 already has 3000+ words to it!
Thank you so so much to everyone who was so patient for this! Your continued support and clamor for this fan fiction is the reason I've had the motivation to continue! A special thanks to my betas @edenihira and @camomile-t for helping me perfect this fic, and special thanks to @novelist-becca for giving yet another look-over and helping me fix dialogue!!! This has truly been a labor of love and I could not be more grateful.
Also friendly reminder that if you do any fanart for this fic I WILL upload it into my fanfic! I see every piece you show me and it makes me!!! so soft!!! to see that people love my work this much.

December 6, 2022. To all those on A03 who’ve waited patiently for chapter 4, I do apologize for the wait. It’s still in production, but while y’all waiting, have this and a preview of Hexsquad Among Humans: Perils of a Realm Beyond the Boiling Isles | Chapter 4: The Dinner:

“Luz showed me her ancient human archive of knowledge, the wiki! I memorized the passage on the creation of apple juice,” Gus bragged, as if it were the words of some ancient scroll he’d recited and not the encyclopedia that every once in a while was tweaked to say the moon was in fact made of cheese. Library databases were more reliable sources of information, but Luz could barely figure out how to navigate those and so she hadn’t introduced him to them yet. She’d promised herself she’d get around to showing him those when she was competent enough not to embarrass herself in front of him. That day never came, and so he was stuck with wikis that were only surface level.
“Yeaaah,” Vee scratched behind her head. “You always gotta double check what you get from there. Anyone can edit that to say whatever they want.”
“…oh.”
“If you want more reliable info, the local library’s a pretty good source.”
“You have those here?” Amity perked up, “That’s right… the human bookworms!” She turned to Luz. “Maybe sometime we can go see them, right?” Hearing her genuinely a little enthusiastic was so sweet. Titan, did Luz wish it was under any other circumstances than the ones they just came from that they ended up in the human realm. Maybe then they could’ve had that mundane slice-of-life date she promised and not have the destruction of the isles on their mind.
<i>Still, a trip to hit the books might be in order. </i>
History books and old spell books were likely the best place to search for leads on getting back to the isles. Even if the information was bound to be vastly inaccurate. All the sources Luz had ever had on magic before - whether from ancient myths, fantasy books, or online forums - had been wrong to a degree. Not even the databases were guaranteed to have reliable information. How could they when all humans had to go off of were leaks from another world and not firsthand experience? Then again, maybe humans <i>had</i> traveled there and back again but to different regions. <i>Or maybe even different titans.</i> It wasn’t impossible, as long as Titan blood leaked into the right puddles of water at the right location. Even then, narratives weren’t guaranteed to be accurate. Philip was - <i>once was</i> - living proof that humans tended to distort the truth of magic intentionally. Finding a way back was going to be like finding a needle in a mountain of unreliably documented haystacks.
“Luz?”
A gentle squeeze of her arm brought her back to reality. It occurred to her she hadn’t replied verbally or via text to her girlfriend’s suggestion. Without thinking she mumbled, “Uh, sure. Yeah.”
Amity frowned.

Good day Hazel! Just wanted to ask ya how on earth are you so consistent in writing? Whats your process like? I know you for Dare To Dream and im honestly fuckn impressed how you wrote 25k in... a month? I could barely manage 11k in two months! Admittedly I havent read a bunch of your other Suselle and Kriselle fics, but I'm still impressed how consistent you are, even with the recent concert one I'm surpised how fast you were.
Life kinda gets in the way sometimes, I haven't written in like 7 months because I've been absolutely hammered out with irl happenings, and I wanna know how you manage your schedule and momentum when writing.
Hey! Sorry I didn't answer this sooner, the past few days have been actually insane as I'm sure you can guess KDSJHGFSDHFGSDF
So, I don't know, this is kind of always a hard question to answer because process is always so personal, you know? But I do have a few tricks I use to make it as painless as possible, so that when I sit down to write I actually get words on the page. First, though, don't knock your pace, friend; 11K in two months isn't bad at all. Sometimes you can do a lot more with a lot less, anyway.
Primarily, I have outlines, and I outline constantly in my head. I don't always write down my outlines explicitly, but I think about my stories allll the time when I'm walking places, in the bathroom/shower, doing chores--whatever occupies my body and not my mind, I'm usually thinking about my stories. Sometimes down to the details; I've blocked out entire conversations between characters in my head before while in the shower or something, including which versions of 'said' i use for which lines and where I cut the dialog with actions, and all that shit. If you've already got it in your head, then when you have free time to actually write, it often just dumps out of you onto the page.
If I don't have a really strong idea for a scene already loaded, though, it can be a bit harder to jump that first sentence hurdle; but it gets a lot easier over time. I have had to start so so many scenes over the years that at this point I just run through a bunch of different potential starts--starting with fast-paced action, starting with dialog, starting with a character's internal thoughts, starting with a description of the setting, starting with sensory imagery that the POV character is feeling--and then find one that works and write it down before I can second-guess myself, just so I can get over that initial hump. It becomes quicker and quicker with practice. And once I break that hump, the rest of the scene usually flows pretty easily.
If I'm REALLY struggling with how a scene should go, thuogh, that usually means there's something missing from it structurally--its too boring, or its too convoluted, or something like that. In that case, I'll really think about what I'm trying to accomplish with the scene, what the best way to get there is, and if there's any sub-conflict I can leverage within the scene to chug it along. Oftentimes in scenes, you want there to be two parallel 'conflicts' happening that can bounce of of one another (though I use 'conflict' pretty loosely here). For example, maybe Kris and Noelle are having an emotional conversation about their childhood; but at the same time, maybe they're walking down the street. The 'walking down the street' part may sound horribly insignificant, but keeping things in motion like that is very useful for breaking up the conversation: maybe Noelle looks away to admire the scenery before going on, or Kris trips after hearing something particularly unexpected, or they both stop walking for a minute, even though they're going to be late for class, because they've realized this is more important--the secondary 'conflict' in the scene gives you something to bounce the primary conflict off of. If I'm having a lot of trouble getting invested in a scene, in my experience, it's usually because I need to give it a secondary conflict.
From a logistic standpoint, too, a lot of my productivity literally just comes from having google docs on my phone, because if I'm in like for two minutes at the grocery store, well, that's two minutes of writing I can accomplish. The little things add up, especially since I don't bring my computer everywhere -- if I were limited to just writing on my computer instead of when im walking places, eating lunch, running errands, etc, my fics would never ever get done. It's at least 30-40% of my writing time these days.
Hope some of that was helpful and/or interesting! Hope you have a good one.
Adding Nathan’s tags while I add my own contributions. Honestly? This is really good advice.
As I often refuse to shut up about, I’m an academic writing tutor irl as well as an avid fanfic writer. My contribution isn’t necessarily advice but I just wanted to add my own process about writing.
For me, my best ideas (whether in writing or artwork) often complete shitposts. Followers of my writing know that I tend to say “oh this’ll be a thousand word Drabble” and then 30k materializes out of nowhere.
Writing conception for me (in both academics and hobby writing) is often this clunky hybrid of outlines and rough drafts. I’ll write out my thoughts in this chunky draft, look it over, then provide a slightly more concrete (if somewhat shitpost-y) outline.
For the record, “Find quote from wiki” was a reminder to myself to check the source the Wikipedia page I skimmed over quoted on (genuine writing advice: if you’re having trouble finding sources, citing from the source the wiki cites from - NOT THE WIKI ITSELF - is usually a good start)
And below is the outline for the first two chapters of Hexsquad Among Humans (my particular favorite is bullet point 2c)
The funny thing is that things rarely go according to outline lol (2A straight up didn’t happen). I enjoy the spontaneity of writing, and I like to think of myself of the observer of my character’s interactions as opposed to the arbiter of them, if that makes sense.
I’ve been super busy so take an old snippet of a comic I never finished (ignore the designs being outdated shh)
@trevorendeavors HAH vibes

September 18, 2022. Guuuuess who couldn't resist the temptation of making fanart for his own fic again? This guuuuy!
From Chapter 1: The Return
Does anyone know any actual moms or Dominicans who are into TOH?
I could use a little help in that regard for my fic Hexsquad Among Humans. If you're either a mom, parent, or a Dominican individual who's into TOH, I would love your input. I could use some cultural consultation and tips on how to write realistic older adults. Reply to this post or DM me!
Some of y’all don’t appreciate the potential of Gus and Camila interacting because I can see Gus saying something about the human realm and Camila sitting there not sure if he’s joking or not
Yes. YES.
August 03-19, 2022. At long last, Hexsquad Among Humans: Perils of a Realm Beyond the Boiling Isles has COVER ART! I had so much fun making this. Logo done in illustrator, the rest done in photoshop using a collage of photos on my phone, a hand-drawn pen and pencil base and a reference by @ohfuckohfucknoplease (I'll reblog the reference below). Outfits of the Hexsquad are actually outfits I own IRL believe it or not.
Edit 2: I DID AN ART SOME MORE
Edit 1: Also I didn't want my new pinned to get rid of Bon's incredible art so YEET:
By the way if you want to be featured in my fic, make some fanart and tag me with the hashtag Hexsquad Among Humans so I'll see it!
EDIT 2: UPDATED MY COVER:
Also guys don't worry, I haven't forgotten about Hexsquad Among Humans. Here's a snippet from Chapter 4
"Don't you mean, ah,” Camila interrupted, now more than a little concerned. “apple <i>juice?</i>" Luz knew exactly where this was going. She remembered innocently asking that question. It was sweet, and a bit nostalgic watching someone else go through the same initial weirdness she did when she came to the Isles. In better circumstances, she would’ve loved to explain the whole thing to Mamá, and she wouldn’t have to clarify that her friends weren’t the bad crowd and weren’t into booze.
<b>It’s like apple cider,</b> Luz prepared her explanation. <b>There’s hard versions for adults and then there’s milder stuff for kids.</b> She got up from her seat (the act of which her jelly legs did not like) and handed her phone to her mom.
The tension eased out of her with a slight laugh, “Ohhh, so the blood thing is just a nickname for cider, then! My mistake.”
She was met with blank stares.
"... no?" Willow reciprocated the confusion. "Haven't had apple cider before. Or juice."
Her mom’s discomfort visibly returned.
“Who gets juice from <i>apples?</i>” Hunter muttered in the direction of the window, beyond which lay a world blanketed in cold rain, the likes of which was unfathomable to most witches. Then, he remembered where he was and froze, as if anticipating a blow from someone for asking the wrong question. Amity only glared at him a little.
“Humans do,” Gus answered. Not judgmentally; casually. “Apple juice is a fruit juice made by the maceration and pressing of an apple,” Luz could tell an infodump was nigh on the horizon. She sat back and listened. Anything to block out the tangled mess of thoughts in her head. Plus, his enthusiasm could be really contagious. Maybe it’d help dislodge her post-apocalypse funk. “The resulting expelled juice may be further treated by enzymatic and centrifugal clarification to remove the starch and pectin, which holds fine particulate in suspension, and then pasteurized for packaging in glass, metal, or aseptic processing system containers, or further treated by dehydration processes to a concentrate.” With each step he gestured with hands, growing more and more animated and regaining a little light in his eyes. Distantly, she wondered if he forgot he could make illusions to demonstrate the process or didn’t want to make them in order to appear more human and/or not freak out her mom. “Human apples come in so many varieties, too!”
She’d begun to zone out a little. Gus’s speech continued in the background of her awareness as she joined Hunter’s gaze staring out the window. Cold rain. She didn’t ever think she’d miss the hot sting of water pellets that felt like home. The cold rain of the human realm had never felt colder than when she was trudging through it just hours earlier.
“There are pink ladies, granny apples, paula reds, jonathans, ida reds–” “Eda?” Luz’s mouth moved before her mind fully registered. Gus’s smile dimmed. “Ida with an ‘i.’ Not…” he sighed. “Sorry.” He sat back down. “You guys probably didn’t need to know all that anyway.”
More Hexsquad Among Humans fanart from Bon!!! Ily Bon. Anyone who makes fanart of my fics will be featured here and in the fic itself!
More fanart for Hexsquad Among Humans!!! Thanks to Bon on discord for making this for chapter 1! I absolutely adore it.
my favorite thing in the world is reading a completed fic and the author’s note on the first chapter saying “i think this’ll be like 3 chapters!”
but i already know that it’s thirteen chapters
somewhere along the way, this poor author lost control of their life and the rest of us have benefitted immensely
August 5, 2022. Some artwork for Chapter 3 of Hexsquad Among Humans, drawn by yours truly. Read the associated chapter here:
Also I just realized if you look at the chapter title it looks like the "3:" face. I wish I could say I planned this ahead but really it's just a happy coincidence.
ALSO ALSO If you guys want to make fanart for my fiction, please do! I will feature/credit/link back to all of you! Tag me here, on insta, or comment on the fic itself (I read every single and I mean every SINGLE comment on my fic).
