Spearhead in Space is really funny because Liz spends her first scenes with the Brigadier so clearly believing she's stuck playing the Scully to this man's Mulder. "Oooookay, so you're a UFO-chasing conspiracy nut who's somehow got government pull" NOPE. The Brigadier is one of the most thoroughly regular people on Earth. He just happens to have discovered that his world gets invaded by aliens sometimes.

(And really, the fact that he responded to that discovery by going through government channels and getting an official Earth-defense organization set up with U.N. backing and oversight tells you a lot.)

I very much understand why the doctorwho portrayers need to be grade a++ actors first and foremost but its always so fun when they cast someone with Extra Skills. by which i mostly mean i ADORE it when the doctor is a musician its so correct to the character to bring your real instrument in there, but also, shout out to whatever mr sylvester mccoy was up to. in this house we respect his clown diploma and what not

i love when something created with no money gets popular and famous and a bunch of follow-ups are made with a huge budget but they still have to refer back to the terrible, no-money visuals from the original thing. like og dr who was like “ok whats a monster umm ok we’ll put a plunger and a whisk on it” and they had to keep doing that same shit for all the 300 years that shows been on. the saw bathroom is 30 ft across and has multiple sinks and multiple toilets but no stalls and a BATHTUB. what public bathroom looks like that?? none of them. nobody questioned it at any point and guess what they had to recreate that dumbass fucking set like 3 times. star trek has all the money they could ever want but vulcans are still always gonna be just regular guys with elf ears and eyeshadow. it’s the best. every franchise needs this to be kept humble

my favourite trivia about the daleks was that originally it wasn't a plunger, it was a knife or something? but william hartnell (the original doctor who) was all, "no. you are very bad at moving those things around on set and that thing is dangerous, I am absolutely not working with it" and put his foot down until somebody said "fine. how's this?" and stuck the plunger on the end and he said "mm-hm, that will do" and the rest is history thank you william, you were doing god's work

Think I'm having a pretty different experience w this season of Dr who was someone who's watched all of classic who & also consumed a lot of EU content. Expanded universe stuff in particular does sometimes go full 'here's some weird shit. Good night.' 73 Yards was unusual for TV who but I can think of some equally weird Dr who short stories u know?

Also like. It was literally already TV canon that fairies exist. They were in Torchwood. There was no 'oh these guys are actually aliens' curtain drop they were just fairies. Have we all forgotten so quickly...

TO BE CLEAR this isn't a criticism of the show, i just think the difference in the way ppl are reacting to this arc is interesting? was talking to a friend of mine who said a family member they'd watched it with had asked why there are 'gods running around suddenly' and from a classic who perspective its like well there's always been gods.

i love how in the first two seasons of doctor who, Mickey Smith, regular human guy who i am led to believe works as a car mechanic, has absolutely unparalleled hacking skills just whenever the plot requires it. first time it happened it was bc the doctor gave him the top secret UNIT password that lets any random dickhead with a laptop fire a missile out of a submarine directly at london. but all on his own he's casually clicked his way into high security military databases at least twice since then. if you were a character on a tv show in the 2000s, just knowing how to turn a computer on was enough to give you hacker superpowers.

#mickey is a computer programming prodigy and nobody realises it#bc he only hangs out with his girlfriend and his girlfriend's mum (don't know enough about computers to realise this is impressive)#and his girlfriend's weird alien boyfriend (probably used to hack high security websites as a prank in preschool)#jack has spent enough time in the 21st century that he MIGHT have the context to realise mickey's unusually good with computers#but it just never came up when they were hanging out :/ via @grimark
