Gallifrey characters by D&D class

Since Hogwarts house assignments have already been done, I’ve recently turned my mind to a new question:

If the Gallifrey quartet were player characters in a D&D campaign, what would their classes be?

Here’s what I’ve got so far:

#1.) LEELA = BARBARIAN

Admittedly, I think there is a strong case that could be made for Leela as a Ranger with K-9 Mk.1 as her animal companion. She’s certainly a hunter. Ultimately though, the way Leela stands apart as a proud outsider amidst the “civilized” society Gallifrey screams Barbarian to me. Leela is unafraid to tap into her natural instincts and ferocity and fights best when wearing minimal armor. I think Barbarian is the best fit.

#2.) NARVIN = CLERIC

Based on his profession and job title, you might initially think Rogue for Narvin. After all, he is a spy. He’s the head of the organization specifically sanctioned to do dirty deeds in defense of Gallfirey’s interests. However, once you see Narvin in the field (example: “Intervention Earth”), you realize he is the least subtle, least sneaky intelligence operative, possibly ever. For me, what defines Narvin is his faithful devotion and unwavering loyalty not to a person, but to the idea of Gallifrey: what it could be and what it should be. Narvin is a Cleric. Gallifrey is his deity and the Laws of Time are his holy scripture.

#3.) BRAXIATEL = BARD

I thought of Rogue as a possibility for Braxiatel, too. He’s certainly never met a rule he didn’t want to break, and unlike Narvin, he can be sneaky and subtle when he wants to be. Braxiatel real strengths lie elsewhere, though. Brax oozes charisma and uses spoken word as his weapon of choice to charm, bamboozle, manipulate, and occasionally hypnotize those around him. Braxiatel’s typical modus operandi is pure Bard.

#4.) ROMANA = WARLOCK

I think Romana is probably the trickiest to pin down. Based on her politics, I think you could fairly describe her as a fanatical crusader, which puts Paladin in the running, but she doesn’t really go around smiting things, does she? Then I had an epiphany: Romana is a Warlock and Pandora is the dangerous otherworldly patron to whom she is beholden due to a terrible pact. Romana can gain secret knowledge from Pandora, but she is constantly at risk of being subsumed and taken over. (K-9 Mk.2 is Romana’s familiar.)

What do you think? What classes would you assign them to?

Okay so I’ve spoken about this a bit but I know not everyone knows. I DM a D&D campaign where two of the PCS are Leela (played by @janeturenne) and Romana (played by @presidentromana).

In the campaign their classes are as follows

Romana: Paladin

Narvin: Paladin

Leela: Barbarian

Braxiatel: Warlock

I like your choices and your reasoning behind them, I just wanted to add my take on them.

(So obviously I didn’t pick classes for Leela and Romana but I included them anyway because I agree with what my players chose to do here. Would definitely appreciate input from you guys though, on why you chose that class)

Romana: As you say yourself “fanatical crusader” is a label that could be applied to Romana. And here’s why I think paladin was a perfect choice for Romana: If you take out the religious aspect of the paladin and change it to being devoted to a single cause, then suddenly it’s A Lot more Romana.  Your reasoning behind her being a warlock holds up, but I just don’t think she’d want to tie herself to Pandora in that way. I know she makes questionable choices a lot but I just don’t think she’d go that far? PLus the fighting style of a warlock doesn’t really fit her imo.  Bonus: Romana’s subclass in the campaign allows her an animal companion which can change shape, but normally takes the form of mastiff, so that’s where her K9 fits in.

Narvin: So I can definitely see what you mean about Narvin being a cleric. Gallifrey Narvin probably would be. But in a D&D setting I just see him as more of a paladin. Clerics, to me, are a lot more defined by their religious nature. And I should note here that in my campaign there are no gods. Clerics are the representatives of a being, Paladins fight for an ideal. Narvin, to me, is a paladin for the same reason Romana is. He is devoted to his cause (keeping Gallifrey safe).

Leela: Yes to everything you’ve said. I can see the ranger parallel too, to some extend. All you need is a DM who will leave in a lot of tame-able puppies and a reasonably high wisdom skill (and I’d like to just say here canon Leela is like the only high wis character in a society of high int people) to have a high enough animal handling skill you’d get lucky and befriend a K9 eventually.

Braxiatel: So here’s where Pandora fits in in my campaign. She’s Braxiatel’s patron. And of course everything I said about Romana not wanting to be Pandora’s pawn would be the case for him too. But here is the thing, I think Brax would make a deal that left him enough time he’d be able to find a loophole before it was time to pay up. In my campaign I think he trapped Pandora somewhere (not inside his mind, this time) and he’s just sort of keeping her there so he still has his powers but she won’t be able to hurt him.  The fighting style fits him too, I think. You can’t cast a lot of spells as a warlock, but you do pack a punch. And I just think Braxiatel, who is all about setting the stage perfectly so he can swoop in and get what he wants in one move, would like that.  As for him being a bard… I can see your reasoning but. Warlocks, like bards, use their charisma score for spellcasting. This means Warlocks are also very high charisma. Some bard colleges do sort of fit him, I agree, but bards are a bit too support focused for me to see Brax as one.

A while ago @madfanboyinablueblog tweeted Seán Carlsen and asked him if Narvin wore boxers or briefs, and Seán said Narvin was a starched and ironed boxers kind of guy so uhhh

I drew it

Bonus comment from when I showed this in a group chat earlier: “Since I can’t see Narvin talking to anyone while so indecent, does that mean he talks about Rassilon and the CIA to himself, angrily, like at night or in the shower?”

The answer is yes.

When I was a child I was afraid of the moon. I used to think that the sky was a giant raven and the moon changing phases was its slowly blinking eye, watching me.

Draw the giant space raven.

This one gave me a lot of inspiration.

SKY RAVEN!! HECK YEAH!! Favorite bird and an awesome concept? Heck yeah. Awesome art? Double heck yeah!! Thank you so much for sharing this with the rest of us! I love it so much!
