This is gonna be unpopular opinion but since it’s episode 300 and John is all over my dash, I have to say it. John Winchester is SUPPOSED to be a polarising character. Anti-john and pro-john fans either hate him or love him entirely. While those stances are still valid, because I bounce between the two on any given day, you can’t impose your perspective on the other camp, the show or the writers because John is supposed to be a morally grey character.

For every “John loved his kids!” posts, there are “John abused his kids!” posts complete with gifs and meta. John will never be fully good or fully bad and that’s the point because John represents every dysfunctional parent out there. By trying to paint John entirely white or black, you’re not only destroying his character’s complexity but also Sam and Dean’s. How many times did Sam and Dean deal with personal struggles influenced by their dad? John has his signature all over his boys’ lives. Dean’s selflessness but also his low self-esteem. Sam’s personal strength but also his loneliness. The boys didn’t have a normal childhood but they knew how to stop the world from ending because of it.

John is every parent that loves their kids but also damage them in the process. Love him, hate him, but you can’t ignore the whole picture. That’s why, after all this time, John is still such an influential character to Supernatural.
