i really want to swim in the pool this year, especially since it's the first year my niece can swim, but i avoided it like the plague last year so i wouldn't have to deal w trying to find what i'm comfortable w wearing and if i'd just give in to my parents telling me to shave (i'm nb, not out, they've hounded me about that since that shit first grew and i'm in college rn). idk if swimming is worth the shit i'd get from my parents or having to do shit for it and maybe not even using the pool much

Kai says:

Hi, I don’t know what you’re comfortable wearing, but some very gender neutral stuff are rash guards (swim shirts) and boardshorts. These come in a variety of styles (form fitting shirts, looser shirts like tshirts/athletic shirts and for the shorts from 3 inches all the way to 10 or more inches for inseam length, and in many many colors and patterns) and so if you feel like covering up or wearing something that people won’t question and feels like a regular outfit, but you can swim in, then I’d recommend those.

If you just search “rash guards” or “boardshorts” on Amazon or online shopping, you should get lots and lots of results and it’ll feel like wearing a tshirt and shorts, but a kind that has sun protection and dries fast.

I also know it’s safe to wear a sports bra or a binder (not too tight) to swim in if it’s not vigorous activity and it should be fine to tuck as well if these apply to you.

Also, regarding shaving. You can maybe find lightweight athletic pants that aren’t hot and wear those over the summer so they can’t see, and tshirts and stuff for the summer - soccer pants, track pants, etc.

Hope that helps, and send another ask if you have more questions!

Also, followers, what makes you comfortable?

i'm a trans boy (16) and i REALLY want to shave my legs this summer but i'm afraid i'll look too feminine. can i shave my legs and still pass while wearing shorts? am i valid as a boy?

Charlie says:

I don’t know about passing, that depends, but you’re definitely valid as a boy!! (The concept of passing has quite a few things wrong with it, but most trans people know this and I assume you want to pass for comfort and safety reasons.) I think that your overall passing, however, depends on a variety of factors, because several cis boys I know have no leg hair. Good luck ;)

Hiya! I'm a transgender girl, and I hate my body most all day long, any advice? P.s. I've not come out to anyone yet, so for me wearing more feminine clothes, or makeup or anything isn't exactly an option!

Fox says:

Unfortunately, there’s not much of a “cure”…but first know that this is entirely normal and many other girls are experiencing the same thing.

Look yourself over at some point in the day and try to find three things you like about your body. If you can’t find three, at least find one, and replace the other two with things you like about yourself as a person.

Do this as often as you can. When you find what you like about yourself, you’ll open up more options for liking those things even more. You have beautiful hands? Wear a ring(s) to bring them out. Love your stomach? Try shaving it (partially or wholly) or generally grooming it. Maybe paint on it. You like your butt? Go out and get some jeans that make it pop, even if they’re from the “men’s” section.

It’ll be a process, for sure. You’ll also want a system of support– maybe other trans girls? Find a group of people who you enjoy complimenting and who enjoy complimenting you.

Any trans feminine followers or mods have more to add?

i grew my hair out and dyed it bright blue. Took a little convincing, but it lets you feel a little more femme without necessarily coming out. Also, like generally plaid flannels and such are fairly unisex, and so those can certainly help. During the winter, I found shaving my legs helped, because I was wearing pants and didn’t have to explain it to anyone, but it helped me feel more femme.
