Is it easy to change your gender marker on your birth certificate? Unfortunately that’s the only thing I can change in my state right now to reflect that I’m not cis, since there isn’t a gender x option for licenses here

Lee says:

It’s relatively easy to change your gender marker on your birth certificate in some states, and extremely difficult (as in it’s not even an option) in other states.

So it really depends on where you were born.

This website has info on how you can update your gender marker on your birth certificate, if it is an option in the state you were born:

i'm trying to apply for a census job and they ask for "sex". I'm nonbinary and transmasculine and have all of the legal genders on various government IDs. They ask for proof of registration with the selective service if I select male and I'm not. How should I answer?

Lee says:

If you’re in the process of changing your gender legally and have only updated some of your documents, I’d put down the gender that you are switching to. Eventually, everything will have that gender marker and it’ll all align.

If you have finished legally changing your gender marker on all your documents but some legal gender marker documents that say X and others still say a binary gender because X isn’t an option, I’d use the binary gender that’s on your passport (Which has to be either and F or and M) right now.

Are you allowed to change your legal gender more than once??

Lee says:

I know someone who changed their gender marker from male to female, then their state started to allow X as a legal gender and so they changed their gender marker to X.

So they had 2 changes of legal gender, which is a lot of paperwork, and expensive because you have to pay the court fee for the hearing then additional fees to change your gender marker on like every document, so it can end up being a couple hundred dollars. But it is possible!

I’d look at the laws for where you live- laws around changing your gender marker on your birth certificate or driver’s licence or passport (etc) can vary by state or country.

Here’s a resource on that that’s constantly being updated with law changes in the US.
