JQY (Jewish Queer Youth) is a nonprofit organization supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Jews and their families in the Orthodox community.

Our mission is to address the unique needs of frum* and formerly frum LGBT Jews. JQY is dedicated to cultivating a Jewish community where no one feels alone, bullied or silenced because of their orientation or gender identity. Special attention is given to youth, young adults and their families; however we have programs for all ages.

*Frum includes: Orthodox, Yeshivish, Chasidish, Sephardic, modern, and traditional Jewish identities.

Are you Bisexual? Bi-friendly? Queer or Questioning? and on Facebook? You are also invited to join us on: Bisexual People of Faith A community for bisexual people from all faith, religious, spiritual, spirit and wisdom traditions.

Yes! Thank you! This is awesome

im jewish and i identify with one of the 4 nonbinary genders as written in the torah (thats right christians trans ppl are in the bible) and every time i see someone making fun of "weird" genders i think "my ancestors didnt die for me to give into the false concept of the gender binary"

:OOOOOOO do those 4 nonbinary genders have names? ive head of culture-specific genders like two spirit but never this !!

also ur right nb people have been around since forever

HEY HI HELLO I AM HERE TO TALK ABOUT MY FAVORITE TOPIC JEWISH NONBINARY GENDERS

ahem

yeah so we have 4 nonbinary genders!!! or. like 4 trans genders. 2 are binary but 2 are nonbinary

androgynos: sort of controversial as to who can and can’t use it, as it refers to someone who is biologically male and female. i personally don’t think non-intersex ppl can use it because it seems to be intersex-only, but im not intersex, so any intersex ppl who wanna comment on it can totally correct me.

tumtum (thats me!!!): cutest name ever, to begin with. second of all, has a “hidden” gender. really hard to explain but the tumtum is p much just “yeah you can do whatever you want”. they have the choice of presenting male or female and it can change and stuff. its somewhere between genderfluid and agender.

saris: trans woman!

ay’lonit: trans man!

Alright so I’m Jewish and being trans definitely won’t stop me from practicing my faith. I’ve read from the Torah and done aliyahs before which involves using my Hebrew name. When I start transitioning and change my name, do any mods or followers know how to go about changing my Hebrew name? It’s very feminine and I hate it just as much as my regular name. I don’t want to stop reading Torah just because I can’t bear associating myself with that name, even if it’s just for a second

Devon says:

I’m Jewish but I wasn’t given a Hebrew name, so I don’t have any personal experience with this... But here are some resources that should be helpful!

Our coming out resources. (if you want to come out to your family and/or your rabbi)

I strongly suggest meeting with your rabbi (or emailing/calling them) about this! If they’re not LGBT+ friendly, look for someone else to talk to through this online guide.

Best of luck! If any followers have experience with this, please let us know!

Hey there, I'm 16 and ftm. I was wondering if any of you or your followers could help me. I'm converting to Judaism and can't seem to find any resources or blogs out there that offer a lot of help/guidance. If anyone knows anywhere where I could get some advice it would be greatly appreciated. Thank-you.

Lee says:

There’s an ask here with a Jewish trans blog, but we might be able to help better if you clarified what type of resources/blogs/help/guidance you’re looking for. Are you looking on info on converting to Judaism, or info on being trans and Jewish?

I'm an Orthodox Jewish trans dude with a really small chest. (34A) I have a lot of shells/Kiki-Rikis/whatever non-Orthodox people call those tight shirts you wear under a short-sleeved thing to cover your elbows. Do you know of any way to use them to bind? Thanks!

Kii says:

So, fair disclaimer, I have never worn one of these garments so this is an idea and might not work at all and of course, listen to your body and if this is uncomfortable, don’t do it. The only thing I can think of is doing something similar to camisole binding (see here) but it might be too bulky or not tight enough for that to work, depending on what the material is like.

So I found a site that does a subscription box for your period- it sends you basics like hygiene products, pain medication as well as snacks and pampering stuff to make you feel good,

but the best thing is they have a specialty boxes, like vegan or kosher only snacks but also

they specifically offer boxes for menstruating guys and nb folks.

which is pretty darn cool.

it’s called bonjourjolie and I think it’s 1000% awesome tbh

i think this is the best thing omf

@mygenderadventures, don’t know if this is content you’d put on your blog, but I think this is fantastic.

I don’t tend to post non-art stuff but thanks for the shout-out anyway!!! I’m sure this will be of interest to a few people here :)

All of their specialty boxes.

Their website says it’s $16 a month plus shipping which varies.

Overall it looks pretty great! If I still used tampons I would love to use this tbh it looks so nice and convenient and also a really cute gift

Not the same anon as the most recent fasting question, but if I'm newish to wearing a binder should I not fast on Yom Kippur? It's a Jewish holiday that happens once a year, and I don't ever fast aside from that day. If I do fast, should I not wear my binder that day?

Kii says:

If you’ve fasted before and been okay (not felt faint/lightheaded) you should be okay, just keep a sports bra with you to change if you start feeling bad. If there’s any type of long ceremony/worship where it would be considered impolite for you to leave, you might also want to change out of your binder before that to be safe.

Name thing: I went by Sam for about a year (I'm non-bin) but everyone kept asking me what it was short for. I didn't want something as gendered as Samantha or Samuel so I googled for a while and eventually I found the name Samwell, which is Hebrew. That was perfect because I'm converting to Judaism. And then I just shifted my first name to my middle name and my middle to hyphenate with my last, since I like all my names and the way they sound together.

Emery why do you spell it G-d? Just wondering.

Emery says:

It’s a Jewish thing! You’re not supposed to write the true name of G-d, which technically only applies to the Hebrew name, but a lot of folks generalize it to their vernacular language - Di-s, G-d, etc.

Hi I'm Trans feminine amab and I've been trying to find synagogues in my area that are accepting of trans issues but some of them have told me I'm being sinful. So 1) how should I ask a place of worship about their beliefs of transgender worshippers and 2) is there any evidence in the Hebrew Bible and/or Christian Bible that shows G-d is loving and accepting of lgbtqia+ and more specifically transgender people?

Emery says:

Check out TransTorah as a super awesome resource for the second question there, but in a nutshell, yes, absolutely, there is textual “proof” that G-d loves trans folks, and also, the basis of our tradition is in questioning things and twisting words and making things what we want them to be. So like, even if there wasn’t, who the fuck cares? Judaism is Ours to do with what we wish.

As for the first question, I would seek out Renewal, Reconstructionist, and Reform congregations, since they’re typically more liberal and more likely to be trans-inclusive. Look for buzzwords like “open and affirming” on the websites of shuls. And worst comes to worst, there’s some really great Jewish community on Jumblr, and we’re here for you and we love you. (Also if you’re from the Midwest in the USA, hit me up for some particular recommendations.)

[Also, just a note for followers: The term “Hebrew Bible” is pretty widely hated by Jews. Say to Torah if you mean the first five books/the Pentateuch, and Tanakh if you mean the Torah, the Prophets, and the Writings. Thanks!]

Lee says:

Just in terms of general resources, you could check out the @transjewry blog and @transconverts!

So I picked a new name a couple of weeks ago, and it suits me better than my birth name. I like that it's a Hebrew name and I'm half Israeli. However, it's a very common name for Jewish boys. I'm an atheist and I feel like nobody will take me seriously as an atheist because I have a Jewish sounding name. What should I do?

Emery says:

If you’re named, like, Abraham or Isaac or Israel or Jacob (or the Hebrew equivalents, i.e. Avraham), then that’s preeeeetty Jewish, since those are the three fathers, but most other Hebrew names you could easily explain by saying you’re Israeli. Also, being culturally Jewish and religiously Jewish are quite separate things, and secular Israelis are real real common. I wouldn’t be concerned. However, if you feel uncomfortable having Judaism attached to your name, pick another name. There are lots out there.
