Transgender Teen Survival Guide

@transgenderteensurvivalguide / transgenderteensurvivalguide.com

We are a blog created for people of all ages who have questions concerning their gender identity. Read our FAQ here!
Transgender is an umbrella term that is inclusive of, but not limited to (nor forced upon), trans women, trans men, non-binary people, genderfluid people, genderqueer people, agender people, and anyone who doesn't identify as the gender assigned to them at birth.

As someone who has mental illnesses I thought that I'd let you guys know what some, if not most, people with mental illnesses don't really care about language like 'mad' or 'crazy' and would rather people just say what they have to say rather than treading on eggshells around us - we don't really wanna be treated any differently just because of our mental illnesses/disorders

Lee says:

That’s a totally valid way to feel about it!

We still ask that people don’t use ableist language in their asks because while you and some other mentally ill and disabled people are okay with ableist language, not everyone is, and we’d like our blog to be a space where all of our followers can feel comfortable.

Avatar

Ren says:

A great deal of the initial push on this blog to make a no-tolerance policy for ableist language came from me, back when TST was still active. I’m mentally ill and neurodivergent in the ways that are most often hurt by ableist language, often literally violently! Although there are many mentally ill and learning / developmentally / cognitively (LDC) disabled folks who are not affected by these words, there are a great deal of us who are frequently and painfully oppressed by the use of this kind of language.

Not only does that language hurt many of us, but it is also deeply rooted in systemic ableism, and no organization I am part of will refuse to fight ableism, especially on our own turf. I am absolutely sure that the other mods here feel the same way.

Although I support & agree with Lee’s answer fully (thank you Lee!!), I wanted to add on this further clarification, and I also wanted to remind you that nearly all of us on the mod team are mentally ill and/or LDC disabled - we are, by and large, a team of neurodivergent folks, and we have our policies for good reason.

Why are so many mods inactive? I always want to ask a specific question but the mods I want to answer are never on.

Jay says:

Simply, we have lives. Some of us are in school, some of us have jobs, some of us live in situations that don’t give us much free time. It’s sad, and can be really annoying, even for us, but here it is.

Ren says:

Two things I want to add here:

1) Even if we can’t be on right away, we’ll get back to the inbox at one time or another (and yes, despite having lives and many of us having disabilities, we will get back to the inbox). Go ahead, ask your specific question! If you name a name and we’re not there immediately, chances are another mod will see it and let us know. We are in pretty constant contact, so that’s not difficult.

2) Y’all know that we have personal blogs listed on our { Meet the Admins page }, right? If you have a question for a particular mod, send it to us directly. We’re more likely to see and answer it (though we still can’t make guarantees, since, y’know, lives, disabilities, et cetera). If you ask nicely (and depending on the mod, of course), you might even be able to IM us, Skype us, email us...you have options!

Please, be patient with us, and explore the options we have for you, because they do exist.

(Also, keep in mind that this is a pretty demanding job, and we’re not paid for a second of it. Given that, we’re doing pretty spectacularly, IMO?)

Just to let you know, on your Articles section there's one about why to use "trans" and not "trans*", but in a couple of articles below you use "trans*" ;-)

Emery says:

Lordy lord, I didn’t even know that page existed, much less that it had that kind of little inconsistency! Thank you for making me aware of it. Edits have been made, both to delete the asterisk and to update some of the advice :)

Hey, I saw that the kink/nsfw blog that had been linked in the past isn't being 'actively posted on' does that mean that if I send an ask it won't be answered? Because I had a question about sexuality/kink in relation to my gender but I knew you all didn't want those here for parent reasons. Any advice?

Ren says:

Heyo, that would be my blog!

I’m not actively posting personal kink there anymore - I realized recently that some minors follow me there, so it would be unprofessional, uncomfortable, and unacceptable to be posting about my personal kink / sex life there.

However, I’m still using that blog to answer questions about sexuality and kink! In fact, I’m hoping to phase the whole blog into one that’s more informative than personal. So you can definitely still send your ask! :)

How long do you generally take to answer asks? I sent one a while ago and you haven't responded yet, but it may have just been lost along the way.

Emery says:

We currently have 17,543 asks in the inbox, plus around 500 drafts. Sometimes we can reply immediately, sometimes it takes a week or more, and sometimes, try as we might, certain things never get answered.

Where did that post about hormone dosage go?

Emery says:

The mod team has talked it over and re-affirmed our commitment to not offer advice or information on self-medicating for hormones. While we recognize that it does happen, and we ideally want people doing it to be as safe as possible, we also are aware of the immense dangers of taking hormones without the support and guidance of a doctor, and we don’t want to encourage that risky behavior. If you are already planning to self-medicate and are in possession of hormones, we can’t stop you, and we may be willing to help you find resources to keep yourself safer while doing so, but we shan’t offer resources publicly on self-medicating, because it is incredibly dangerous.

what timezone does the schedule follow? like, how do I know if it's sunday or monday for your schedule? Where I live it's considerable sunday night or monday morning (it's half past midnight) but I know that mine is not the most popular timezone...

Emery says:

A bunch of the mods are on CST, but we also have three in England, and two or three in EST... Basically, kind of all over. Send in questions based on your timezone, and we’ll answer them in ours (or...y’know... whenever we can... since we don’t follow the schedule thing super closely).

whats the deal with no trans feminine ask's being answered ? I have sent two and they did not get answered and I have not seen any others answered ?

Emery says:

I’m sorry! We often save transfeminine asks to drafts in order to separate them out from the deluge of masc asks, but then sometimes we forget they’re there! We will definitely remind ourselves to keep making trans women and and transfeminine folks a priority on our blog.

Emery says:

I should hope all our followers are aware of this already, but we here at TTSG do not tolerate hate of any kind, particularly that which calls out and insults a particular mod by name. It’s so important to remember that we all have different experiences and opinions, we are all learning and creating community together, and we must be patient and loving with each other. That gets hard as hell, but it’s necessary. Anyone who sends mod-specific hate will be blocked. Please feel free to politely disagree, or to offer corrections if we answer something incorrectly or offensively, but ad hominem attacks are unwarranted and unwelcome here.

Hey y’all, I’m hosting TST today, because Ren and Haruka and others who usually do are busy with AP tests, and I forgot to turn on the submit box this morning. It’s on now and we’ll do our best to post everything today. I warn y’all that I might not be as wonderful and compliment-filled as Ren et al. are usually, but I promise I think you’re all adorable/handsome/pretty/cute/gorgeous/whatever. I just... get tired af.

would you be able to apply as a native american even though you're white passing and only 1/4th native?

Ren says:

That is up to you. If you identify as Native, you are welcome to apply as such; we are not the gatekeepers of anyone’s racial, cultural, or ethnic identities. All we ask is that you be honest, and that you acknowledge your privileges.

Emery says:

We noticed in our climate survey that people are interested in having mods with traits that we already have - for example, followers have requested mods who are:

  • ace (Ren and Emery)
  • aro-spec (Ren, Emery, Liana)
  • dealing with depression/anxiety (honestly I think all of us?)
  • BPD (Haruka, Ren has BPD traits)
  • religious (Emery, Haruka, Fox, Ren, Liana)
  • Jewish (Emery, Fox, Liana)
  • genderflux (Haruka)
  • disabled (Ren, Phoenix, Emery)
  • dissociative (Ren, Emery, Haruka)
  • fat (Phoenix, Ren)
  • pagan (Ren)
  • non-American (Chrissi, Jay)
  • nonbinary (Ren, Emery, Fox, Haruka)
  • binary male (Phoenix, Jay)
  • psychotic (Ren, Chrissi)
  • ADHD (Ren, Liana)
  • CPTSD / PTSD (Ren, Haruka)
  • a system (Ren)
  • have violent urges (Ren, Haruka)
  • eating disordered (Emery, Haruka, Fox, Phoenix, Ren)
  • agender (Ren is in the family!)
  • genderfluid (Ren)
  • pansexual/panromantic (Chrissi, Haruka)
  • Buddhist (Fox)
  • sexual assault survivors (Emery, Phoenix, Chrissi, Ren (ish))
  • have sensory processing disorders (Ren)

So clearly y’all don’t know us as well as we had thought - or hoped - so please check out our (improved) mod bios, which will be worked on in the coming days, here!

Of all the identities folks wanted represented, the only ones we don’t already hold, as far as I know, are: Black, Christian, blind, HOH / d/Deaf, intersex, two-spirit, autistic, Muslim, bipolar, and then a number of specific nationalities, including Middle Eastern, Russian / Scandinavian, Australian, South/east Asian, Asian, Central / South American, and Canadian. Though we do have mods who, for example, are Asian (Haruka, Fox), we don’t have mods who live in Asia. Currently we only have two non-American mods, and we recognize that as a shortcoming.

Ren says:

I haven’t felt comfortable talking about this until recently, but I’m discussing the (likely) possibility of being autistic with my therapist. That doesn’t mean our team doesn’t still need autistic folks, but it does mean that I may be able to talk about autism-related experiences (although not all - I am very aware that I have been “allistic-passing” for a very long time, and that means I’m not qualified to talk about every single aspect of being autistic).

So! For our next round of mod applications, we’ll be focusing on people who are:

  • Black
  • Native / indigenous
  • Latin@ / Hispanic
  • Muslim
  • South/east Asian
  • living outside of America
  • intersex
  • autistic

Please note that applications are not yet open. We are waiting until some of our younger mods are done with AP testing - that will be about two weeks from now, and then we will make another post regarding mod applications. :)

Is there any downside to having extra mods? I'm curious because you all seem a little overwhelmed with the amount of questions you get (which btw, you're handling great. no pressure to answer more than you can handle.) and I'm sure there are tons of people who would love to apply to be mods, myself included, so why not at least accept temporary mods to help for now since the end of the school year is a tough time?

Ren says:

Okay, so I’ve discussed this with the mods, and you’re absolutely right. The trouble is selecting mods is actually a really intense process, and since we need to further diversify the voices on our team, it’s really important to us that we figure out our weak points, specifically from y’all’s point of view.

So. We’re going to open applications in approximately two weeks, but in order to make that application relevant, we’d like to ask that anyone with the time and energy and interest take this survey.

All questions are optional, but even if you answer every single one, it should only take about 10 - 15 minutes. If you want to see a certain identity represented on the team, this is your chance to tell us! This is also your chance to tell us anything else we could do better. Please! We want to hear it. The goal is to make this space a safe and inclusive one, and we are relying on y’all to help make that a reality.

Avatar

Ren says:

Hey friends! We will probably close the survey down sometime this evening (midnight EST is likely). If you haven’t made yourself heard yet, please do. :)

To be honest, a lot of the identities you’ve mentioned are ones that we already represent, but obviously we haven’t been open enough about them - so more to come on that soon. <3
