I find it interesting that you keep saying that Asians in Asia don't see themselves as poc. While you may feel that way, I think it's valid to note that Britain (white people) occupied and conquered what was then India (today India, Pakistan, Bhutan, etc.) There is a big difference between the fair indians and the darker indians. To be light skinned is considered beautful. Therefore, that region of Asia does see itself as poc for they were treated as second class to the gori British.

Avatar

Hey, I appreciate you writing in! I’ll explain my thinking behind the term here.

I too grew up in a former British colony, so while I did have a concept of whiteness and therefore do not see myself as “white”- I want to emphasise that the term “person of colour” does have different political and cultural implications than “non-European” or perhaps “non-white”. Simply, I do not see myself as “white” because of British colonialism, but I does not mean I see myself as a “person of colour”. I see myself as Han Chinese, East Asian or Asian. “ In general, I believe the term should not be used carelessly outside the US due to different ideas of whiteness between the US and Europe, as well as other countries in the Americas, where race isn’t perceived the exact same way. I don’t believe it should be used at all in the non-Western context.

1. Person of colour is a term that specifically originated in the context of the United States’ system of colourist racism, of Jim Crow, of slavery, where the idea of “white” became a vehicle to confer privilege. I say “vehicle” because whiteness has always been a social construct. in much earlier parts of US history, several light-skinned European ethnic groups were not allowed to access whiteness, like Irish people. Today, they are seen as white. Although the term has been used carelessly by many people on tumblr, “person of colour” is first and foremost a racialised identity taken on to organise against white supremacy- in Western contexts.

2. I don’t believe it should be applied to non-Western contexts firstly, because the history of Asian colourist discrimination has actually long-predated European colonial rule. Further, it doesn’t quite just exist as a marker of racial otherness, but as a class division. Fair skin has been prized in China, Japan and Korea for thousands of years due to classism. I believe it is the case with India too- from what I know, it was very much tied to the ancient Indian caste system or other class/regional divisions. That is not to say that Western beauty standards don’t help to reinforce this preference today, but it would be inaccurate for us to ascribe this obsession for light skin all to recent European imperialism. Recognising its ancient roots is crucial: as a light-skinned East Asian, nobody has ever tried to sell me skin-whitening cream, unlike my other Han Chinese friends who were darker-skinned.

3. As “person of colour” is an organising tool against white supremacy, I do not believe it has much relevance in non-Western contexts because we are no longer under European colonial rule. This is not to say its legacy doesn’t still affect us, but that the fault lines and tensions that matter are very often not going to centre so much around whiteness anymore in day-to-day life. I feel white privilege can be discussed there without us defining ourselves as “persons of colour”.

  • Primarily, I am against the term because it posits a false illusion of solidarity that erases local oppressor-oppressed dynamics, and centering on whiteness very often becomes a tool of deflection for their own crimes (like in Mugabe’s ZImbabwe, when he appropriated land from white farmers but mostly gave it to his cronies who didn’t utilise the land properly, causing food shortages that hurt thousands of black Zimbabweans.) On another level, I don’t wish to centre around whiteness all the time because I think the fixation on it at the expense of other fault lines is in of itself a perpetuation of Eurocentic/whitecentric history and narratives.
  • To me, the attendant notions of solidarity underpinning the idea of POC have very little relevance when outside the Western world, our oppressive structures and systems of privileges are very often run by other non-Europeans. Whiteness is the “default” in the US, but in mainland China? It’s being Han Chinese. Han Chinese supremacy is the reason for continued racism and Sinicisation of non-Han minorities like Uighur Muslims and Tibetan. And this racism has a history in Chinese imperialism that long-predates European colonialism. To call all of us “POC” flattens the power structure and posits false solidarity between oppressor and victim- it allows the oppressor to wrongly occupy the space as the victim: as if the Han Chinese general is the same as the non-Han people he has captured for human sacrifices to the gods during the Shang Dynasty. Minorities in the Middle-East and North Africa like Kurds, Amazigh are very often marginalised by Arab supremacy- such as when Saddam Hussein enacted a genocide against Iraqi Kurds in the 1980s, using chemical weapons. The Nigerian government’s slow response to the Boko Haram crisis despite angry protests by Nigerians? The government not caring when people in Northern Nigeria, which is much more impoverished- die. For my own family history, some of the deepest grievances stem from how the Japanese mistreated my grandparents during WW2.

4. Lastly, the term “POC” outside the Western context tends to flatten the power structure between non-Europeans who live in the West or otherwise have a Western background vis a vis people from our ancestral countries.

  • White privilege can reinforce Western privilege but they are not totally synonoymous: Because even people not considered white do benefit from citizenship in a Western country or a Westernised background. When it comes to global economic inequality, we are closer to the centre of the empire, to the position of those who benefit, not the exploited. People like myself benefit from speaking English, from appearing “more European” and generally Westernised. It’s the reason my friend, who is of Indian ancestry, was treated very differently by the immigration officer when his British accent became obvious- compared to Indians from India who were on the same flight as him. There would for example, be a huge power differential between an Arab-American soldier and the other Arab people in say, Iraq. I cannot in good faith say my experiences are the same as the Chinese workers who work long hours in factories, many of whom start working at 16. At 16? I wasn’t done with schooling. It was taken for granted I would get a university education, and so on.

5. So, the term “person of colour” is meaningless to me in the non-Western context context, and I personally find it actively harmful when people lump us as “POC cultures” because it purports to create an illusion of solidarity that obscures the massive amount of racism and oppression Asians are enacting against each other till today. Further, I see it as a projection of Western race politics on a non-Western context, which is decentering from local dynamics.

In conclusion, I very much see myself as “non-white” in Asia due to growing up in a former European colony. But I do not see myself as a “person of colour” there. I see myself somewhat as a person of colour in Europe, because it is a Western context where light-skinned Europeans are the majority. Still, not entirely- because it is quite an American term and European racism has a lot of ethnicity dimensions. I tend to see myself as Han Chinese, most specifically.

OH MY GOD someone on tumblr finally wrote a post about this! A REALLY EXCELLENT POST that makes all the points! OH MY GOD I WANT TO CRY. I DIDN’T THINK I’D EVER SEE THE DAY. The pessimist in me says this won’t get reblogged nearly as much as posts full of misinformation and simplification about social issues, but. Basically I wish this was on every blog on this website. EVERYONE NEEDS TO KNOW.

#^^^^#this is actually one of the reasons the term grates at me#it's a sitational identity that is not even used right and has been turned into an adjective#it's an acronym. saying 'poc cultures' is just saying 'people of color cultures' which is a step away from 'colored people cultures'#like at least say cultures of color. and even then that only really applies to those cultures within white countries#like black american culture and chinese american culture and cherokee culture would all be cultures of color#splitting them further even to address the array: baltimore black culture differs from kansas city black culture#kansas city black culture has sudanese american black culture and somali american black culture and freemen descended black american culture#to descibe these as cultures of color makes sense because of the way they form and adapt and exist under white hegemony#but i'm not going to say that yamato/wajin japanese culture in japan is a culture of color just because they're brown??#more accurate would be to discuss ainu and ryūkyūan cultures as parallel to the concept of cultures of color#because japan does not operate under hegemonic whiteness: it operates under ethnic yamato/wajin japanese hegemony#this is why i default to using brown - or black and brown - when discussing race without qualifiers#it's also why i loathe the term bipoc. like if you're talking about black and indigenous people why not just say that#if you're separating out the b and i doesn't that go against the whole point of poc as a term??#there are just. so many layers that get flattened and simplified to everyone's detriment when people#just pick up the new lingo to parrot without actually learning anything#myron grumbles (tags edition)#other people's asks#queue#long post#offsite link

posts about the alt-right pipeline being compassionate towards young men while radical leftists shun and shame them are not fucking saying "the men are becoming violent because feminists are too mean!" and if that is your takeaway you need to get off tumblr until you've better honed your critical thinking skills.

those posts are talking about how effective the language and approach you take in your activism can be. this is literally cult deprogramming 101. if someone is being taken in by a violent or dangerous group, that violent or dangerous group is usually offering them compassion and solace while working hard to convince them everyone else in the world is their enemy. you are under no obligation to coddle or act compassionate toward these men and their violent ideologies, but if you have the means to try, it is something that you can do to make a tangible difference.

radicalized people are often only one loving friend or family member or external voice away from being de-radicalized. of course that is not always the case, but it very often is. a lot of y'all rightfully understand that you do not carry the burden of being that voice, but a lot of y'all also have a lot of internalized ideas about morals and punitive justice and have simply written off these people as deserving of only the worst and not worth saving.

ten years ago, my grandmother was a fox news watching republican who voted red in every election and very well could have fallen down the qanon rabbit hole if not for me and her daughter challenging her compassionately, walking her through hypotheticals that validated her feelings & proving why they were false, & being patient with her despite our extreme division in political ideology. it was frustrating fucking work! but i decided i wanted to do it, because i could see the horizon and i could see me making a difference!

"misogynists have been saying feminists are too mean for years, get new material" that is not the fucking POINT. the point is that you, feminist, can be the compassionate voice that guides your brother, your father, your cousin, your grandfather away from fucking becoming or staying a nazi. you can show them compassion and companionship. you can be the woman they think of when their alt-right bros try to convince them that women are the enemy. and you can choose to crystallize that image of yourself so wholly in their mind's eye as worth protecting that they may very well choose to reject those harmful ideas.

it's not saying you HAVE to do it! it's saying you CAN do it! don't you 'firebomb a walmart' people all love taking change into your own hands? where the fuck is that energy right now, huh?

i saw this right after and OP turned off reblogs but LITERALLY!!! LITERALLY.

i know the punitive justice obsessed "kill all abusers" ass catholics on this fucking website don't want to hear shit like this but love is literally the answer. fix your heart or die

Listen to say that someone only wants to *do* the Bad Kink things to someone because they want to do Bad Things is so fucking stupid. So fucking reductive. Ignores so much of human nature.

Like I have always had zero desire to dom but now I am in a different relationship situation with someone who would appreciate some of that sometimes and all of a sudden I'm like hey actually I WOULD like to do those things but it's very much "I respect and value this person and I want him to have a good time". There's the trust of it. There's a lot more very explicitly horny things I could say about the appeal but I'm trying to keep this a PG discourse post. There is no desire to be a bad person or use someone for my benefit to their detriment.

Like. Sex is a cooperative social activity, is it really so alien a thought that people might want to make each other happy?

I've been legitimately in awe for like. a while at how you (and others whom I know) are a VOCAL NON-ZIONIST and yet people are SO antisemitic that you are forced to defend a viewpoint which you, personally, don't believe in, just because you're...someone who won't accept historical revisionism. Like.

I'm so sorry you're put in this position. You shouldn't be expected to defend yourself as someone who literally ISN'T EVEN A ZIONIST to defend the existence of Zionists/the modern state of Israel/literal Jewish indigeneity to the Levant.

Like, shit, I'M a Zionist and I don't get half the shit you do. And I work on a college campus (granted, it's *far* from Columbia and is also in Germany (lol ideologically and geographically), but I have met multiple students with really fucked up views and have had to tear down literally illegal stickers on college property, and also I've got 250 followers maximum and am therefore a VERY small-time tumblogger)!

As a Zionist, myself, and as someone dating an Israeli Zionist, I'm both really sorry you're dealing with so much raw antisemitism AND really sorry that you're being put in the position of defending a belief that you literally don't hold.

As do we Jews all: You deserve better. I'm sorry your non-Zionism is being pushed aside. And yet, I'm really fucking grateful you're around, as a non-Zionist who is vocal about...everything that helps to protect even those whose beliefs you don't share. Nevertheless, you should never have been forced to do so. Again: (as do we all) You deserve better.

thank you. it’s fucking wild bc like. this shit wouldn’t be ok to say to zionists or israelis either but antisemites have decided otherwise so they think any of the utterly unhinged racist and antisemitic shit they say is fine as long as it’s directed against zionists/israelis, and thus anyone they want to target with utterly unhinged racist and antisemitic shit becomes zionist/israeli. there are even ppl who believe i’m in the idf even though i’ve literally never even been to israel. the very simple answer is that people hate jews but don’t want to admit it bc openly hating minorities is frowned upon in progressive circles so they have found a convenient loophole.

I think the fact that Sinwar was found with an UNWRA ID needs to be talked about more.

Like it is fucked that an organization meant to be helping Palestinians has been infiltrated with people wanting jews dead. And this isn't the first instance we've seen of UNWRA employees being hamas members.

I do think that something like what UNWRA was intended to be needs to exist. Either a massive overhaul needs to happen to get rid of any current terrorists and prevent any in the future from being employed or just stop the UNWRA and start a new version.

I'm gonna be so racist towards robots in the future

can somebody explain to me what exactly the joke of this post is? making up slurs for robots? referencing actual forms of racism people experience (fucking "mechanical-american")??? like, what's funny here. being racist? to a made up group of people? you're excited to be racist? i'm lost here. where's the joke?

NO LITERALLY THEY ARE. some people will backpedal on this but there are people who, for one reason or another, have a DRIVE to find an outgroup to oppress like they used to. they can't be racist or homophobic or transphobic because it's not 'cool' in their circles anymore, they've 'learned their lesson' about that. but now who are they going to feel superior to? who are they going to be above in the social hierarchy? it's a feeling privileged people have felt for their whole life, and its absence leaves an urge to find someone new to pick on.

if you see a future where AI becomes "sentient" or accepted as such, it becomes THE perfect target. at least on social media like tumblr and twitter, the vast majority opinion concerning the AI technology of today is so negatively charged, hostile, and misinformation-fueled that if it were to become a social issue the bigotry could easily match or outstrip e.g the TERF movement.

it's been said before that fears of "AI uprising" come from a place of patriarchal or racial privilege; while I don't think those fears are invalid it is definitely worth understanding where those fears are coming from. who is telling you that AI is dangerous, close to surpassing humanity, and taking over the world? is it neutral parties interested in the technology? or is it people like Sam Altman and Elon Musk, trying to hawk their own shitty products while also selling you another out-group and get you addicted to the political right's signature brand of hate?

Oooooookay let's all settle down. The OP was a black man making fun of antiblack racist canards thrown at him over his life. He's not a "privileged person looking for an acceptable target," he's MAKING A JOKE ABOUT HOW PEOPLE ALREADY DEHUMANIZE HIM.

This is a fictional joke about a fictional class that does not exist and will not exist in our lifetimes if ever. The humour comes from a real person who has real experience with racism imagining a fictional scenario in which he gets to have power for once, and the power he has is over an objectively not real, not human group.

He's being "racist" to Barbie Dolls because they aren't real and aren't hurt by it. Unlike him. A black man who hat had these racist phrases used against him in REALITY.

Why are people acting like the Tesla robovan is a large step forward in innovation? Other companies with self driving cars have been doing self driving taxis for years with better technology than Musk uses and they still suck ass

Most self driving cars use some form of LiDar which gets its info by shooting out lasers that give it a sort of 3D map of the surroundings and is generally mostly accurate.

Teslas on the other hand use cameras. Which are worse in every way, give a 2D image, and are much easier to mess up and tamper with. Because the husk insists upon the self driving cars having cameras. For some reason.

And the LiDar self driving cars are also bad because AI can’t understand edge cases and it big sucks and causes traffic jams but it’s at the very least more accurate than cameras.

On my local news they called this thing “the next iPhone” which I’m still mad about. The iPhone was the first successful mass market launch of a touchscreen smartphone and they did it well. They did it very well. I remember. It came out on my 9th birthday. The one with the party that nobody came to and my grandparents left early so they could go look at the iPhones at the mall.

This is not the first mass market self driving taxi. It’s not even doing it the best or even particularly well and it’s not something that will change the trajectory of life as we know it. Self driving cars have been here and they suck ass. Humans are better drivers than AI. Humans can understand edge cases and react in milliseconds to them.

The way you make getting around safer and easier is getting cars off the road with quality transit and bike infrastructure. Then the people taking those options will be safe and the cars that are left on the road will have less cars to crash into.

These self driving cars are not good quality, not solving any real problems, and will not replace our need to fix our terrible transportation infrastructure.

There are days when we're all embarrassed for our countries. Today is such a day. Jesus Christ, you'd think we were capable of learning from history, but apparently not...

There's two good news here, the one is that our president is in no way obligated to let these clowns form a gouvernment, and the second is that Kickl is so crazy that nobody wants to be seen with him, so he'll have a difficult time finding a coalition partner.

Don't get me wrong, this is bad. It's a shitty day for Austria, it's a shitty day for the queer community in Austria especially, and it's a shitty day for Austrian democracy. But, our democracy is strong. It can survive this. It's survived worse.

Still, I'll be honest, I'm glad I live in Vienna, a very liberal city with generous protections for LGTBI+ people, and who historically protected us even if the federal gouvernment was agitating against queer people.

Right now I just hope that the conservatives keep their word and won't make Kickl chancellor. A sad day when you have to hang your hopes on conservative integrity.

Not to be a killjoy (though it is what I do best) but the unsafe and rough handling of a baby Pygmy hippo in a pretty substandard Thai zoo being meme-ed into something funny and cute really shows just how much groupthink plays into public perception of animal welfare.

Moo Deng shows avoidance, threat displays and stress around her keepers that are constantly man-handling her, blasting her with a hose and harassing her. The enclosure is mostly concrete, which is horrible for her soft feet. There looks to be some substrate but there doesn’t seem to be any areas for wallowing or deep water wading.

There’s also very easy access of this hippo to the public with no places to hide. I’d love if someone could shed more light on the enclosures but from what I’ve seen it’s not great.

Also the free contact and forcing into tubs that the keepers do is only going to create an avoidant and potentially aggressive and dangerous Pygmy hippo.

But the public happily overlook that because she’s cute. It’s a similar attitude with seals too.

Stop rewarding bad husbandry with clout. Baby animals deserve agency and respect and to grow up without getting harassed and feeling the need to defend themselves constantly.

Somewhat unrelated but that recent viral video of the pelican being manhandled in a shitty indoor facility is also driving me insane, but I guess it's funny because pelicans are evil or some shit.

This is the shittiest pelican enclosure I've ever seen, compare it to the second image at an actual zoo.

As a zookeeper, I have worked with pygmy hippos and can with expertise confirm her enclosure and treatment are trash and one of these days her keepers’ unsafe practices are going to get someone hurt. Also for the record with the pelican vid, they literally can’t breathe if you hold their mouths shut like that

Animal video killjoy for life, please use your brain for a damn second before you share ANY animal content online, I can guarantee you a conservative 80% of it is straight horrible

Just saw a post that was basically "Hey off of the internet people usually aren't so crazy antisemitic and most of my day to day interactions as a visible Jew are normal, everything is gonna be ok" and I'm making a new post to not derail, but...

I'm super glad, obviously, that this is the case for many of you. But I do think we should be ringing the alarm bells. Because while you enjoy your grocery trips and post office in relative peace (as you ought to), here is a VERY incomplete list of things I have dealt with in the last 11 months.

-assaulted on my way to class, followed, spit on repeatedly (magen David necklace)

-professor took me outside of class and told me I needed to denounce my Judaism (I mentioned in passing my dad's family in an anthropology class)

-same professor refused to accept my final paper for reasons that did not match up with paper, email full of dogwhistles

-same professor told everyone to attend the protests and "teach those zionists to know their place" she is a Black Latina young professor. Yep.

-another professor straight up refused to accept any assignments that mentioned Jewishness (they were assignments about our families). Gave a student who submitted nothing except a picture of a Palestinian flag full marks. Failed me. I am an all As student, btw. Forced to drop.

-the chair of the anthropology department threw my complaints wabout said professors away without due process. His social media is full of blood libel.

-had to miss my finals as I could not physically get to them due to the protests

-followed and harassed in stores

-synagogue was vandalized multiple times

-called a kike while things were thrown at me

-protestors stood outside of my apartment patio with final solution signs

-new apartment, away from campus: friends of roommates harassed me constantly, to the point I could not use common spaces. Roommates told me that's his right because it's his "political view." He didn't even live there.

-new roommate moved in, less than 48 hours before she attempts to stab me, after learning I eat kosher style. "...kosher? kosher?! FUCK YOU" stab stab, etc. Bitch that was my good knife.

-the other roommates tell me to gtfo of the home I'm renting, keeping my rent ("you people can afford to lose money") and destroy a good portion of my belongings while cursing to me random nonsense about Israel. The police took 25 minutes to get there. We live in the middle of the city.

-fun fact: I had never mentioned my political stance to these people and it's not on my face-out social media (very bare bones profiles)

-been disbelieved by everyone I told this to including the police, my school, the leasing company, and my now ex best friend of 7 years

-cursed at in a store when I asked if there was a kosher section

-told nobody likes Jews because we bring down the vibe and have a victim complex. My knuckles are healing just fine after that, btw, thank you for asking! She is not.

I don't know how to request the 7th off from my school without basically incriminating myself with a threat of violence. There is no world where I just sit there when a classmate says "happy October 7th."

Hope this helps.
