How to join the Transgender Ancestor Rite: an FAQ on our updated format

What is it?

  • an annual, non-denominational ritual honoring transgender individuals who have passed on
  • an act of solidarity with the lineage of transgender ancestors who have come before us and paved the way, as well as with the descendants who will come after us when we are gone
  • a chance to share tenderness and kindness with the restless spirits of transgender people who lost their lives to violence
  • an opportunity for living transgender folks, including those who have lost trans loved ones, to grieve, mourn, and pray
  • a labor of love from a multiracial group of trans spirit workers, each at various stages of study in ancestor veneration practices, who have been putting on this ritual since 2014

Another trans man was murdered. Unconfirmed if it’s a hate crime or not.

Please don’t let his death be ignored.

Taylorsville Police, who are investigating, said that two teenagers aged 15 and 17 have been arrested and charged with “multiple felony charges” in relation to what they are treating as a possible homicide. Alex Franco had previously been reported as missing, possibly abducted, on Monday (18 March), after bring seen getting into a 2000s Jeep Liberty. Just after Franco got into the vehicle, witnesses heard a gunshot and the jeep sped away. Franco’s body was found on Tuesday 19 March.

Righteous Torrence "Chevy" Hill, a barber based in Atlanta, was recently killed for being trans. There aren't many people talking about this and the obvious reason is because he is a black trans man. It's a shame that this went unnoticed for so long, but I'm using this platform to remind people that black trans men are often left out of the conversation about who we need to protect and it's unfair.

Cecilia Gentili was a trans activist.

Cecilia Gentili was a mother.

Cecilia Gentili was a friend.

Celicia Gentili was an icon.

Celicia Gentili was here.

Cecilia navigated an often unkind world with a disarming and empowering grace. Her journey from Argentina to the heart of New York City was not merely a search for sanctuary but a quest to make the invisible seen, the silenced heard, and the marginalized celebrated. Her activism was her art, and her art was a form of activism. Cecilia painted vivid pictures of resilience, struggle, and triumph through her storytelling. She brought to life the experiences of the trans community, advocated the decriminalization of sex work, and supporting those living with HIV/AIDS. Cecilia's voice was a clarion call for justice, echoing in the corridors of power and the streets, demanding change, equity, and love.

Cecilia was a force.

Cecilia's legacy is not only in the many movements she helped shape or the policies she influenced, but also in the lives she touched. She mentored many, sharing her wisdom, warmth, and wicked sense of humor, oh so generously. To be loved by Cecilia was to be seen in your entirety, embraced for who you were, and inspired to become who you might be. I know this from personal experience. Her capacity for love was boundless, and she gave it freely, fiercely, and without reservation.

Cecilia was a healer.

Like her activism, her art reflected her soul—bold, beautiful, and transcendent. Cecilia used her creativity as a tool for advocacy; her performances and storytelling were not just entertainment but powerful statements on identity, society, and the human condition. Through her art, she challenged systems, questioned injustices, and oriented communities in the discipline of hope.

Cecilia was a teacher.

Cecilia Gentili leaves behind a world forever changed by her presence. She showed us that change is possible, that love is powerful, and that living one's truth is the ultimate form of resistance. Let us honor her memory by supporting one another with compassion, living our truths, and building the world she knew we all deserved.

Cecilia is now an ancestor.

Rest in power, Cecilia. Your journey here has ended, but the love you left us is everlasting. We love you, miss you, and will never forget you.

god FUCKING damn it 💔

we've lost the iconic Cecilia Gentili, Mother of Thousands, an asskicking light unto the motherfucking world 🕯️

may she rest in power, may her memory be a blessing, may she never thirst 🙏🏽

remember her name, tell her stories, read her writing, watch her performances, let her ferocity ignite you to fight for trans people (particularly trans women immigrants!) in the US and across the planet ✊🏽🤎🏳️‍⚧️

Today, we honor the memory of Tortuguita, who was murdered one year ago by mercenaries from the Atlanta Police and Georgia State Patrol while defending Weelaunee Forest and an inhabitable future for all of us.

Cop City represents a possible future in which ever more resources will be invested in training and militarizing massive bodies of police that will control the rest of us by brute force. For those employed in the violence industry, it represents a tremendous opportunity. The police murdered Tortuguita in order to secure the right to hoard all your tax dollars for themselves and their allies.

By contrast, Tortuguita's courageous conduct stands as an example to us all. In a time of economic desperation and catastrophic climate change, it’s up to us to show that solidarity and the desire for freedom are more powerful than selfishness and the readiness to obey.

2023 Closing Divination

This year’s closing divination was really 10s across the board! We reached out to the Ancestor Helping Spirits who have stepped up to tend the line, as we always do, and asked our usual closing questions: how do you think the rite went this year? Is there anything you think we should change or add for next year? Do you have any messages or guidance you’d like us to share with the other participants in the rite?

All four of the spirits agreed that this year’s rite was successful at what we were trying to accomplish, that the timing and format were right, and that they were happy with how it went. The ancestors who were once human – Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, and Leslie Feinberg – didn’t share any changes they believed we should make for next year, and the messages they told us to pass along to you, dear reader, are as follows:

Marsha: We are always near. Love.

Sylvia: Keep fighting.

Leslie: Take courage. Love.

In our divination with Agdistis, we got some really interesting guidance that we’re going to have to figure out how to implement. The message they told us to pass along was “I take, I fix, I help heal,” and so we are going to work on figuring out how to incorporate their practices more into the structure of the Rite that doesn’t require everyone to have the same background in working with them that we do. Stay tuned for more on that!

But generally our Helping Spirits are satisfied with the efficacy of this year and we’re feeling positive and grateful to all of you for coming on this journey with us for another year!

Hello friends and comrades,

Your mods are working on getting our post-ritual divination done and written up to share with you all. Unsurprisingly we are pretty worn out from several things at once, but feeling positive about the improved accessibility of the new ritual format. We plan to check in with our helping spirits sometime in the next week and report back with how it went for them.

If you do your own divination, we would be excited to see your results! We would also be very interested in hearing any further feedback from participants that we might not have received just yet. Please let us know!

Hoping to have updates for you all soon. Thank you so much for your work.

First time doing the TROE went fab! My etch-a-sketch brain forgot how many people were going to be in the house this week for the holiday, so I ended up whispering the prayer and needing to dismantle the altar after a couple hours, but I enjoyed it immensely.

I've never done a ritual that specifically focused on our transgender ancestors, and I sort of surprised myself with how emotional I got when reading the prayer and reaching out to those who have gone before. I used a playlist of classic queer anthems/songs to build the energy beforehand.

Definitely doing this again next year! (though I really need to give myself more time before to prep everything)

Thanks to the folks at @trans-rite for making this so accessible for a first-timer!

Image: An elevated altar space draped with a white and rainbow checkered cloth. Items on the altar are: a lit white candle, a rainbow colored dildo, an intricately-cut brow drinking glass filled with water, a copy of Virginia Woolf's "Orlando," a bottle of lube, three spools of thread in trans flag colors, a shot glass shaped like a skull filled with honey, a pair of knitting needles in a small trans flag, and a foam non-binary flag.

CWC - Riiise (III), with lyrics written and read by Maya Angelou

Still I Rise You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I'll rise. Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom? ’Cause I walk like I've got oil wells Pumping in my living room. Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of tides, Just like hopes springing high, Still I'll rise. Did you want to see me broken? Bowed head and lowered eyes? Shoulders falling down like teardrops, Weakened by my soulful cries? Does my haughtiness offend you? Don't you take it awful hard ’Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines Diggin’ in my own backyard. You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I’ll rise. Does my sexiness upset you? Does it come as a surprise That I dance like I've got diamonds At the meeting of my thighs? Out of the huts of history’s shame I rise Up from a past that’s rooted in pain I rise I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide, Welling and swelling I bear in the tide. Leaving behind nights of terror and fear I rise Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear I rise Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, I am the dream and the hope of the slave. I rise I rise I rise.

Last night your mods packed up our altar and brought it to our local anarchist infoshop and café for a beautiful TDOR event. A few dozen of us were squeezed inside the little venue for performances of music, poetry, and dance, and then we took the stage to lead the Rite.
