because leftists have changed so much in the last year that i’m not sure if i feel comfortable with the leftist label anymore, despite believing in the core “leftist principles” (generous social safety net, free education/healthcare, etc)

leftists — or at least the radical left — have abandoned those leftist principles entirely. but idk what else to call myself

I stopped calling myself a leftist exactly a year ago, when I saw mass murder and rape being celebrated by people who claim to care about “human rights.” My ethics and beliefs haven’t changed, but I began to see very clearly that those people who I ostensibly shared them with never really believed in them in the first place and were nothing but self righteous hypocrites. As their behaviour has gotten ever more extreme and cruel, my disgust has only deepened. I am completely done with activist spaces. I don’t really label myself anymore, but if I had to, I would just say I’m a humanist.

Your political ideology/beliefs, and what groups you identify with, aren't necessarily the same thing.

You can be any flavour of socialist or liberal, and still not feel at home in most leftist circles. Especially if those leftists circles are more concerned with performative "activism" and exclusionary identity politics, than they are with political ideology and the hard work of real political reform.

And when the self-proclaimed "leftists" reveal that they consider human rights a conditional privilege rather than a universal right?

Yeah. That's betraying one of the most fundamental aspects of liberal democracy, and coming out as grade-A bigoted authoritarian.

Their activism is all about satisfying their own punitive desire to make an example of the group(s) they've singled out as undeserving*. Even when that goes against every principle they claim to uphold, and harms the very people do pretend to care about.

In that way, they're an exact mirror of the MAGA crowds.
