sometimes i think about the golden record and i want to cry

there is a disk. it is 12 inches in diameter, it is made of copper, plated with gold. there is an inscription— "To the makers of music – all worlds, all times" on its surface. it lies on the space probe, Voyager 1, launched in 1977, to explore interstellar space beyond our solar system.

it contains human existence.

116 images— the sun, the location of our solar system, mathematical and physical unit definitions, and our planets, including a blue and swirling white sphere simply labelled "Home." it contains images of human dna, of our atoms, their structure, the way they divide, our anatomy, our conception, our birth.

it does not contain an image of war. nor of disease, nor poverty, nor crime, religion, or ideology.

it does contain a father looking lovingly at his daughter. it does contain the picture of a tree toad in a gentle hand, of a woman eating a grape at a supermarket.

the remainder of the disk is audio. a 90-minute selection of music from all over the world, sounds, and greetings. there are greetings in 55 different languages, one akkadian, spoken in sumer about six thousand years ago, and one wu, a modern chinese dialect. the greetings call out to a friend. it wishes them well. it asks them if they have eaten yet.

but it contains other sounds too. it holds the sound of rain, of thunder, of a volcano and an earthquake. it holds the sound of mud pots and trains. it holds the sound of a mother kissing her child.

with little to erode it in space, the golden record would probably outlast all human creation. it will be 40,000 years before it approaches another planetary system. if it does, it cannot find intelligent life. intelligent life will have to find it, retrieve it from where it floats silent and small through space. we still don't know if they would understand it.

in 7.5 billion years, the evolution of the sun would burn the earth up, and we would not exist any longer, but the voyager would fly on, bearing a memory.

bearing a disk with a little inscription etched by hand on its surface.

the opening recording, by Kurt Waldheim:

"I send greetings on behalf of the people of our planet. We step out of our solar system into the universe seeking only peace and friendship, to teach if we are called upon, to be taught if we are fortunate. We know full well that our planet and all its inhabitants are but a small part of the immense universe that surrounds us and it is with humility and hope that we take this step."

People don't like to admit it bcs cringe or w/e but Homestuck really did revolutionize the webcomic as a storytelling medium and I am endlessly frustrated that before webcomic artists could really stretch our legs fucking webtoonz swooped in, set a new, more restrictive standard, and then monetized and monopolized the ever living fuck out of the concept of The Webcomic until it drove away anyone who couldn't be a professional quality manga artist for free, and now the only webcomics that actually feel like spiritual successors to Homestuck are so obscure they're basically cult classics that you have to beg people to read.

Like it's just so wild to be in high school and see Homestuck be like "we're using like fifteen different artistic mediums to tell this story bcs we can" and be really fucking inspired by that, only to grow up and see basically every webcomic ever have to conform to One Single Standard or fucking perish.

Actually, I realized my real point here: we all need to make our art weirder. Please make weird art. I want more stuff like Prequel Adventure and 17776 and MyHouse.wad and I want it now. Capitalism thrives on conformity. We must be weird at all costs.

yes, Yes, YES! The 2000s-2010s webcomic world was dynamic and weird and I could tell what was inspired by Homestuck or Homestuck-like comics because they employed music, video, GIFs, game-like Flash elements, and more. To be honest, I think the death of flash killed the interactive webcomic, too. Comics like Black Brick Road and Olympus Overdrive had flash elements readers could play around with, and it’s sad these games’ interactive levels weren’t archived when they could have been.

There was also the punky and meta aspect of having your own domain reflect your comic that you can’t have with something as corporate as webtoonz—like The Property of Hate or any Hiveworks-network webcomic where every aspect of the website was created and cultivated for and by the artist. Emily Carroll once used her website as an extension of storytelling in When the Darkness Presses and that blew my mind.

Capitalism can’t afford personality and art can’t pay the bills. When the internet was still the wild west, the new frontier of storytelling, people threw themselves into art and storytelling. Artists can’t just make multimedia work without recognizing the financial and emotional strain of making a minigame within their comic or a musical episode in their podcast and that sucks. I want to see weird stories. I want to see something transgressive and strange and weird. I want to see webcomics be allowed to be weird again!!

Interviewer: After the battle, Ranma returns to Japan without being able to return to his original body, but at the wedding of the two at the end, he receives water from the Spring of Drowned Man that would allow him to return to his original body. However, the fact that Happosai drinks it all up gives me a sense of Takahashi-sensei's gag aesthetic.

Rumiko Takahashi: The beauty of a gag (laughs). It's not that big of a deal, but as the author, I was a little sad at the thought of seeing female Ranma disappear. Ranma turning back into a normal boy in the final chapter is probably a good way to end a manga, but even after I put down my pen, I still see Ranma changing between a man and a woman. I wanted the two versions of Ranma to argue and be friendly with Akane forever.

if i had to explain what tumblr is like i’d only show this

No one seems to be acknowledging the far funnier element of this, which is, that when you go to the commenter’s account, you find out they are actually fucking roleplaying as a sexually repressed skeleton and jjst really committed to the bit while everyone in the reblogs is talking about how much they hate minors or trying to bring back asexual discourse or whatever. thank you kharak the skeleton servant of the almighty lich king

I remember seeing images back in the day from a Japanese English textbook focused soley on how swearing and profanity work in English. It spread around a little because it contained many pictures of anime girls telling eachother to fuck off and calling things shit, but in otherwise weirdly formal English. I wish I could find it, but when I look it up none of the books that come up are the one I'm thinking of.

I found an image from it:

Using reverse image search I was able to find the cover on a Chinese form site called t17:

まりたん 集中 ドリル かいへい2ねんせいよう

Maritan syuucyuu doriru kaihei 2 nenseiyou.

Mari-tan's Focus Drills (for 2nd year students sailors*).

*full honesty I posted this completely forgetting to include the word sailor, this is my best guess as to where it would go in English, I'm still a learner and I'm far from fluent so take any translation I do with a big grain of salt.

Once you have the name finding shit is easy:

I also looked up Maritan in English and found this information on her:

My tattoo artist told me his teenage son came out to him as trans by giving him a bunch of blue cupcakes and a greeting card that said "it's a boy!"

"That's cute," I said.

"It was NOT cute!" he snapped. "I thought he was pregnant."

when i was 17 and in the eating disorder trenches i saw people online talking abt how the fat liberation movement & unlearning fatphobia helped them recover and i did NOT like hearing that i was SO mad about it i was like well having an eating disorder doesnt mean im fatphobic!!! This is ableist etc etc. And then i learned abt the fat liberation movement and started unlearning fatphobia and guess what . it does help

it’s a lot less tempting to try to lose weight by harming urself if u stop seeing being skinny as being important or innately desirable . likewise you stop caring as much abt gaining weight if u stop seeing weight gain as an inherently morally wrong thing that makes you ugly and lazy. And like even if youve never in your life externalized that to another person and you dont consciously agree with it. Still worth thinking abt imo

inb4 "are u saying eating disorders make u inherently fatphobic" im saying we exist in the context of all in which we live and what came before us. which includes how fatphobia is so deeply normalized in society. and that societal cruelty towards people who arent stick thin (for women & those seen as women, mostly) or muscular (for men & those seen as men, mostly) is bound to affect anyone and everyone. and that for Me Personally it helped to see fat people who were happy and proud in their bodies and realizing it didn't have to be the end of the world

and again i REALLY did not like hearing this as a teenager im trying to say it very gently but it pissed me off too when i was in the trenches . Just think abt it ok . it helped me a lot

The next Tumblr addition should be the ability to set traps for mutuals. Like you mark a post as being a trap for so-and-so, and when they reblog they get a little pop up of a box propped up with a stick falling and the words "Haha! @phaeton-flier knew you would reblog that!"

there's people out there that smoke weed with their parents

one time I was at a friend's place and her friend answered the phone and went "hi mom! oh I'm just rolling a joint" the relationships people have with their parents blow my mind. just insane to me. we all live such different lives
