@tomboy13theadventurequeen.... you picked my favorite Disney Princess. And some time before my birthday at that! I want to give you so many hugs right now!
-My favorite thing about Belle is that she doesn't conform to what people expect her to be and that she takes time to get to know people.
-I was about to say I think she should have realized there was a reason the 'West Wing was forbidden,' but she should have left that rose alone because MAYBE there was a reason the Beast kept it in a jar? (the sequels don't exist in my mind because they made her look bad... yeah let's not get into what those did to her).
-OMG ITS MY FAVORITE DISNEY MOVIE! Ask me what my favorite movie is from any animated studio (some more obvious than others if you know me well enough) and I'll always say this one is my favorite from Disney! I love the music, I love the story, and I love the designs, backgrounds, and oh my god the countryside shots are GORGEOUS! I'd go on and on about this if I could!
-I missed this on my last few responses to this answer. While I'm fond of Belle's pink dress, I adore her golden dress which probably wasn't easy to animate with all those details back then. I love how its designed and how it moves when animated. While the live action movie version of the gold dress is ok, I've seen designs for it beforehand that were a lot better and more period accurate. (Not to mention I kind of hated how most of Belle's dresses in that film looked exactly the same when it came to certain details... and how the HELL did the gold dress fall off her in the climax?!)
-A lot of the songs are very good, but I'll go with the title song as its so beautiful and the animation for it is breath taking. (The way the song and scene was done in the live action version was actually really good, but I loved how it was remixed into this grand piece when we got an actual trailer (and not that damn teaser trailer) for the film, like how Bear Necessities had an epic orchestral remix for the live action Jungle Book trailer). For musical score, it's the transformation sequence–it always stayed with me as a child and it has stayed with me since, and its just so full of wonder, mystery, magic, and epic ness.
Its a shame lyricist Howard Ashman died the year the movie came out. He had a huge hand in this film as well as the Disney Renaissance and future Disney films. I wouldn't be surprised if Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast were personal for him, given what he went through, especially when you consider how the songs could be a reflection of the times he lived in. I appreciate his work and I hope he has been an inspiration for many.
-It's a toss between Philipe the horse and Chip. I wish more had been done with Philipe (and I'd love to know what happened to him after he got Belle to the castle), but I liked that he stuck with her and does care for her happiness. (And it was cute to see him bond with the Beast in the live action film). Chip is just a sweet kid, and he might not have the full grasp of the situation that everyone had during the film, but this kid single handedly ensured that Belle and the Beast got their happily ever after by being in the right place at the right time and he deserves a LOT of appreciation for that. (Which is a shame that they didn't go that route in the musical and live action version).
-We both love reading and being a bit nerdy about it, as well as desiring adventure outside of home. Well, I might not be reading as much actual books as I used to, but they do provide adventures that you can't easily have. Also, I like that Belle doesn't take things for granted at face value and I'm like that at times because we both don't fall for guys in just solely because they are attractive (Sadly, I've seen a lot of Gaston types. Not just in the world of dating and real life, but we have too many politicians like Gaston).
-I'd rank the Beast/Adam pretty high. Yes, he has a temper, but I like that he's a flawed character who HAS to work on turning himself around. And when he's the best version of himself, he's very sweet, adorkable, and can be one hell of a badass. Hell, if you've played Kingdom Hearts, the guy was determination incarnate in trying to save Belle (and proved to be a great ally to Sora when he needed help the most). And I do have to give him points for being willing to sacrifice his own happiness/humanity and let Belle go to her dad (though I admit it gets messed up when you realize that meant damning his own servants). Also 1-Screw the Stokholm Syndrome angle and 2-His human form ISN'T THAT BAD! He didn't WANT to be a beast.
-Belle is number one. She's overall the best and there's nothing about her that is Mary Sue-ish. She has a good heart and is capable of making mistakes, but she can tell a good person from a bad one.
For the Disney Princess ask, do they have to be "official by Disney standards" princesses or can they be "Disney characters who are not part of the official Disney Princess line up but are princesses by either bloodline or marriage"?
Honestly I think they mean the main 13 or 16 princesses. I wouldn’t ask about the ones from tv shows since not everyone watches all the shows (like I wouldn’t be able to respond if someone asked me about Star from SvtfoE).
For the Disney Princess Ask; Jasmine.
(I may be a little biased here since Aladdin is my favorite Disney movie)
–I love that not only that she doesn’t want to settle in a relationship, but that she didn’t like ‘Prince Ali’s’ stuck up and very assuming ego, even if it was Aladdin in disguise. And yeah, she’s on point about girls not wanting to be seen as someone’s ‘prize.’ (And in the live action version, I loved that she wanted to be able to rule her kingdom without marriage and I feel that she earned that right without having to fall into a Mary Sue route).
–I think she should have done her research before escaping the palace. She should have known not everything was going to be for free and would cost money (which sadly said a lot about how sheltered she was).
–Aladdin is very good! It’s one of the best of the Disney Renaissance films as well as having Robin William’s best film role period (May he be resting in peace). I love the animation and designs too. And I’m glad to see the Islamic religion has a bit of representation in there, even if its not more than a “Praise be Allah!”
–A “Whole new World is good” but Genie’s “Friend like Me” beats it to the punch (and the animated/live action mash up version on youtube is pure awesome). Its just fun and zany, and my favorite part is “Can you say Abra Kadabra, let ‘er rip” for some reason. If we are doing the live action version, I love “Speechless” as that is a wonderful, powerful song for Jasmine and I feel like that song must be relatable for a lot of people (it sure as hell is better than “Let it Go” if I had to make a choice).
–I always loved cats and her having a freaking tiger is amazing! None of the Disney Princesses have an animal friend like Rajah and I was happy to see that he was included in the film (and I’m glad he wasn’t a live action animal as that would have been hard for everyone on set–tiger included). Genie is a close second because... well, he’s the Genie!
Of course, if its the live action version, then Dalia is my favorite for being an awesome friend and being so adorkable.
–I don’t want to settle for just anyone and I don’t want some rude a-hole who is full of himself either.
–Aladdin would be somewhere below Eric. I get that he wants more out of life and I like that he can be selfless and compassionate despite not being able to afford food for himself. And his cunningness is a good trait. However I value honesty and I personally would have a hard time wanting to stick with a guy who kept lying to me (especially because its happened to me in real life a few times).
–Like Ariel probably somewhere in the middle. She's somewhere above Cinderella and Snow White.

I have been interested in historical fashion for quite some time, and have been watching youtubers who explain ways that modern media oversimplifies, modernizes and wrongly portrays fashion styles from different era, destroys their silhouette for the sake of pandering to modern views of beautifulness. The first thing that I thought of were Disney Princesses whose styles were pretty, but also very questionable when it comes to accurate presentation of the era they lived in. Of course, this simplification could be because the designs were made to appeal more towards what children would see as memorable, tho I have to say that I thought that original Disney princesses designs were accurate for embarrassingly long time.
BELLE NO
Oh God, who thought it’d be a good idea to let Belle read THAT book?!
Heyo! Just wanted to share some potentially good news. Based on the Disney 2020 event held today, Tiana and Moana will be getting their own animated series. The only downside is that they'll be released 2-3 years from now it's a bit of a wait. But at least we have something to look forward to and motivate us. Especially if if you get the chance to see a particular purple crab again.
That is pretty cool! I’m not sure what they could do for Tiana’s series, but Moana’s sounds promising. And it’d be cool if it covered more Polynesian mythology.
But yes I do hope this means another glimpse at Tamatoa. His screen time was too short and I’d love to see more of him.
For Tiana’s series... like I said, I’m not sure and I hope they choose a good crew for it (given the time period and the darker side of it at the time). But I’d love it if they brought Facilier back somehow since he’s another Disney villain that I like.
For the 3 boys, who is your favorite Disney Princess and why?
“ Mulan! I love her fighting spirit!”
“Rapunzel! We’d paint a picture together!”
“ Belle. She knows the enjoyment you can get from a good book.”
AWESOME! Yes to all of this! And Belle is ALSO my favorite Disney princess.
Funny that Harold’s princess is Rapunzel though… seeing we have him in her role in the Tangled AU.
“Wait a minute, who are all of you?”
The unofficial/official Master list of Dreamworks Animation women who are the parallel equivalents to the Disney Princesses.
This list was composed by me and @princeasimdiya12 (So please, PLEASE make sure to thank him as he deserves credit for this too, and you can do this by liking/reblogging his reasoning behind his picks for certain princesses–especially if one of his choices features a favorite character of yours–and by visiting his account). Note that we both chose these characters based on their similarities to specific Disney Princesses, be it elements from their stories or from their personalities.
His reasonings for the choices for the equivalents to Aurora, Ariel, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, and Merida can be found here and here:
My reasonings for the choices for the equivalents to Snow White, Cinderella, Belle, Jasmine, Rapunzel, Elsa, Anna, and Moana can be found here:

Toothiana (Rise of the Guardians) = Aurora (Sleeping Beauty)
Eep (The Croods) = Ariel (The Little Mermaid)
Roxane Ritchi (Megamind) = Belle (Beauty and the Beast)
Astrid (How to train your Dragon) = Jasmine (Aladdin)
Chel (Road to Eldorado) = Pocahontas (Pocahontas)
Tigress (Kung Fu Panda) = Mulan (Mulan)

Marina (Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas) = Merida (Brave)
Susan Murphy/Ginormica (Monsters vs. Aliens) = Elsa (Frozen)
Queen Poppy (Trolls) = Anna (Frozen)
Tip (Home) = Moana (Moana)
Have fun imagining up these multiple AUs. :D
Hey everybody. So awhile ago tumblr user @tornrose24 created an amazing post that compared various Dreamworks women with Disney Princesses based on multiple similarities. (I also helped her out with two other women later on here). And with her permission, I decided to round out the rest of the comparisons in this post.
Marina (Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas) = Merida (Brave)
- Both are adventure loving girls with similar sounding names
- Knows how to fight and use a weapon which was considered unconventional for women in their societies
- Is set to be in an arranged marriage but doesn’t have to go through with it after the events of the movie
- Races against the clock to save a loved one from a horrible fate
- Her peers consist mainly of guys
Tigress (Kung Fu Panda) = Mulan (Mulan)
- Responsible, determined, and willing to do what’s right
- Regarded as one of the greatest warriors of China
- Her main goal is to earn the approval of her father figure
- Has a rocky relationship with a dragon themed character who eventually becomes one of her closest friends
- Has a group of friends who would go to war for her without question
- Goes head to head against a villain who is feared throughout all of China and has a gray color scheme
Toothiana (Rise of the Guardians) = Aurora (Sleeping Beauty)
- Elegant, bubbly and sweet-hearted
- Is friends with tiny winged creatures
- Her closest companions are a trio of powerful people which include a righteous leader dressed in red, a blue cynicist who often butts heads with others and a sweetheart who tries to keep peace among the group
- Openly expresses her crush on the ‘dreamy’ male protagonist
- Gets cursed by a smooth villain dressed in black
Eep (The Croods) = Ariel (The Little Mermaid)
- Curious, cheerful and not afraid to show aggression if necessary
- Long red hair
- Wishes to see the world beyond her home and is fascinated by objects and gizmos from that world
- Main conflict involves butting heads with her father who tries to keep his family away from the other world believing it to be too dangerous
- Falls in love with a charming fellow who shows her the new world much to her joy
Your thoughts?
O.O Oh... Dude we finally got it. We got all the Dreamworks Animation versions of the princesses at last! I feel like I need to make the master list sometime this week and include the links to our reasonings for the choices.
(Well, unless we want to count Vanellope, Eilonwy, and Kida, but it would be optional at this point).
You made good points with these ones! Especially for Tigress and Toohiana.
Man, it would be tempting to draw some of these ideas out (not all of them, as sadly I haven’t seen Sinbad or The Croods... also it would take EONS!). If I had to choose, I’d pick our Dreamworks versions of Moana (Tip would look awesome in Moana’s dress), Mulan (Tigress would look AWESOME in Mulan’s armor), possibly Jasmine (because I have a feeling you’d want more Aladdin AU fan art) and Snow White (Do I even have to say why? :) ). It would be tempting to do Belle (Maybe Roxanne would look better in a more form fitting version of that dress) since that’s always been my favorite Disney movie.
This is awesome!
Oh, but if we have that inevitable ‘Wreck it Ralph 2 Big Disney Princess crossover’ we’ll need to find our Vanellope... maybe there’s someone from the Dreamworks Animation Netflix series that can fit the bill...
Oi, Tumblr! Who can be our Vanellope to reenact that one scene from the Wreck it Ralph trailer? Maybe someone from Harvey Street Kids? (Which I admit I haven’t watched).
Oh dang, I’m starting to imagine how that’d go now.
The Disney Princesses in “Wreck-It Ralph 2.”
Disney Princesses Problem: Ideal White Kingdoms, Flawed Kingdoms of Color
Warning: Long post, Anti-Ta*ngled, anti-Frozen, and also I’m not very nice <333
What does the title mean?
Wherein a Disney Princess movie is more likely to have an idealized kingdom and monarchy if the princess is white, while a Princess of Color in a Disney movie is more likely to criticize the social norms or monarchy of their kingdom.
Aka the white kingdom is portrayed as perfect, and the non white kingdom is shown to be imperfect.
White Disney princesses tend to be very passive and reactive to their plots. Princesses of Color tend to be more proactive and move the plot along.
I’m going to exclude the early white Disney princesses because they are very easy to pick apart and have been done to death. I’m going for more recent Disney princesses from the 1990s and 2000s.
Kingdoms Ruled by People of Color are shown as Flawed and Rife with Inequality
EXAMPLE: Agraba from Aladdin and Maldonia fro the Princess and the Frog
Agraba is shown to have social inequalities, with the gap between the rich and poor being the central conflict and a motivation for Aladdin. Breaking the social norms almost gets Princess Jasmine’s hand cut off. People in these kingdoms can be portrayed as rude, mean, and in Aladdin’s case, full of racist stereotypes of people of Middle Eastern and South Asian descent.
[sorry for the bad quality clip, it’s difficult finding good images.]
Children are shown starving because of these inqualities, and Jasmine is frustrated by her extravagant lifestyle.
She consistently criticizes the sexism she faces and criticizes Aladdin for indulging in his princely persona.
In the Princess and the Frog, there is similar criticism of monarchy and opulence. Tiana has to work for everything, and calls out Prince Naveen for his behavior and lifestyle. He has to learn to work hard, and overcome his personality flaws.
But with Charlotte, she basically gets the white Disney princess treatment. Despite taking advantage of the systems her whiteness gives her, the movie makes no comment on how her privilege puts her socially above Tiana. She’s constantly focused on and the movie indulges in her personality, not realizing the hypocrisy of showering her with positive attention while reprimanding Naveen for his privileges.
Even other Disney princesses such as Mulan have to overcome social problems and work through them. They are pointed out, they are discussed. But when it comes to white Disney princesses, the direction is completely different in how their kingdoms are portrayed.
Suddenly poverty and social problems are seldom discussed or actively shown.
White Disney Kingdoms are Shown as Ideal with no Problems, Royalty are Portrayed as Moral and Always Good
You see, white Disney Princesses are more likely to live in idealized kingdoms and make no comments on the social inequalities or problems that could potentially exist.
EXAMPLE: Corona from T*angled and Arendelle from Frozen
White Disney Princess films reinforce what is called Absolute Monarchy, T*angled especially.
Absolute Monarchy is the idea that a king or queen is given the throne through divine intervention. They have power over others because god wills it to be so.
The fact that the king and queen of Corona took an all healing power for themselves despite the narrative looking down on Mother Gothel for doing the same is because they are royalty. They deserve it because they are rich and if something from the heavens comes down to earth, they deserve it more than someone whose poor.
Frozen deems Anna and Elsa special because they are royalty as well. Despite Elsa being a recluse unfit for ruling a kingdom and Anna being immature, the narrative places their safety above all others in the kingdom because they are rich and have royal blood. They are deemed the most moral, the most pretty, the most deserving of second chances because Elsa practically divinity.
These kingdoms are both unrealistically happy, cheery, with no social problems. The citizens are all nice, never pose any physical threat to the princesses, and their laws are considered fair and equal. This is a direct contrast to Disney princesses films such as The princess and the frog and Aladdin.
Rapunzel lives in an ideal fairytale kingdom with apparently no poverty. The men from the tavern are seen as outliers because they don’t live in the city. There doesn’t seem to be any social issues at all. And yet there seems to be a dungeon where prisoners get regularly executed. But that’s not really seen as a problem or discussed at all. Everyone seems to be ok with that and just eat cupcakes and dance.
Arendelle is full of citizens that just seem to be window dressing. The kingdom apparently has no real issues despite their queen having magic that could potentially kill off their crops, their industries, and their lives. Social inequalities are non existent. And anyone who is against the monarchy is totally evil or out for power themselves.
White Princesses Tend to be Passive/Reactive, Princesses of Color are Active and Move the Plot Forward
White Disney princesses also tend to be very passive too. Rapunzel wants to see the lanterns, but she only gets the guts to go out of the tower because Flynn Rider came along. She reacts to him being there and this kicks off their journey to Corona. Result: She is reduced to being a plot device most of the time and her goal feels very vague because of the genericness of “follow your dream!!1″ theme.
Anna is constantly at the mercy of the elements because she’s been sheltered all her life and constantly needs Kristoff to hold her hand. Elsa’s hands are wiped clean of her damning her kingdom to an eternal winter by making it a result of her emotions and “not knowing.” Result: Anna and Elsa’s “triumph’s” feel unearned and lackluster.
Tiana kisses Naveen as a frog because she wants to have the money for her restaurant and it’s her dream. This takes a lot of thought and she makes an active choice. She endures grueling work and constant disrespect. It’s her motivation and she’s actively trying to get to this goal. Result: It’s satisfying when she achieves her goal.
Jasmine wants to leave the castle so she does it and goes out in disguise. She wants to be her own person and isn’t afraid to call out people to let them know to treat her with respect. She criticizes Aladdin because she knows that even though she has feelings for him, she knows they won’t work if he’s not honest with her. Result: Their relationship is satisfying to watch and they feel like real people.
Ok, so… what about the fact that Atlantica is ruled by a slightly racist king (even if there was a reason for where that racism began) who loses subjects to Ursula? Not to mention the whole thing that drove Ariel to making a deal with her? Also, in Beauty and the Beast–even if you could argue that the castle inhabitants were kinder than the villagers, it still isn’t a perfect kingdom if people are so quick to be judgmental and have expectations on their women. Also, both princesses are white in that film, but Belle doesn’t even HAVE that many privileges at the start of her story, and she’s not as passive as you’d think.
But I do see the problem with this whole thing and I understand where they are going with it.
OK So USA cropped a bit of the princess image here’s Aurora and Tiana
I had the HUGEST smile on my face when I saw Vanellope with the princesses.
I cannot WAIT until this movie comes out. OMG this is going to be awesome! :D
