The Viy (in the illustration) is an evil spirit who can see everything when his long-dangling eyelids are lifted. The Viy is considered a product of Gogol's own imagination rather than folklore.
The creation of the Viy is most likely connected with the idea of the "evil eye" - a supernatural belief in a curse brought about by a malevolent glare.
