This tree is so immense that is makes giant ravens look like a tiny little blackbirds...
Okay, so when we first arrived in this town just a couple of weeks ago the first thing I noticed was that there are a lot of ravens here. If you drive from one end of this tiny air particle of a town to the other you’re likely to see at least fifty of these enormous birds. Flying around in the overcast sky like stunt pilots, playing games with each other on street corners that usually involve shiny bits of trash a notable amount of fowl-play, skulking around in back parking lots and on rooftops like moody punk rockers, etc. They’re everywhere. I love how ravens always look like they know something you don’t. The’ll look you straight in the eye with that piercing look that some how feels intrusive, like they’re looking at your soul. I love how they seem to be equal parts jester and majesty; cunning and darkness and magic, but also childishness and lightness and play. I’ve always loved ravens, so I was immediately quite taken with this town. Now, a couple of things: The town of Rosamond, as well as all neighboring towns for that matter, are placed in a landscape best described as flat. Rosamond in fact is literally sprouted up out of a dry lakebed and inhabits the description of “flat” quite emphatically with the one notable exception of a series of largish hills bordering the back of the town, one of which has a letter R on its front drawn with large white stones, and a large white cross standing on its top. So naturally I was talking to my friend on the phone about all the ravens and teasing about how I was going to have to start snooping around for dead welsh kings and after hanging up I look out the window and see (I kid you not) a street sign that reads “Glendower st” leading straight to the base of the hill marked with an R. An R that I am now convinced stands for Raven King, and cannot be convinced otherwise. @maggie-stiefvater , are you certain good old Owain was buried in Virginia?
Also, I’m taking it upon myself to stalk this street sign with my camera until a raven lands on it. For now the drawing will have to do.
I got this little guy in the mail today! What a face. @comradeandkin is a watercolour wizard.
Spent the afternoon doodling and reading the Brothers Grimm while the clouds argued quite intensely over whether or not they wanted to rain. The pro-rain crowd eventually took the victory, which effectively ended the doodling and reading.
