Jeremy Jordan in all forms, pretty much. All the Jeremys. All the time.

Hey, just curious, what does your Finding Neverland shirt look like? Is it like just a shirt that says ‘Take the second star on the right, straight ahead to morning light’ or? I never even knew they made them actually! Also, what’s your favourite Finding Neverland song?

It's actually specifically J.M. Barrie Jeremy Finding Neverland which makes it super exciting to me! 😀

Also very difficult to photograph while wearing. Their faces were squished. It didn't work. Thus the blanket backdrop. 😆

I tend to go through phases of certain songs on repeat so it changes, but I think Neverland was the first one I got very attached to and played incessantly.

Without all the material necessary to do a Full Post on the matter, allow me to simply present for your consideration:

Comparisons of in-show performances of “Neverland” from the principle players. All examples are live with the audience to give what I like to think is the most honest statement, and I’m only talking about the song orchestration and performance, not any of the scene work which also of course affects the show 100%.

Broadway:

  • “Neverland” from the reworked Broadway production, an audio still from previews but a fair representation of the finished show, as performed by leading man Matthew Morrison. This version is the ‘accepted’ version of the song, the version you hear on the official soundtrack. It’s sweet and simple, but completely lacks power and range in the parts where the song ought to naturally build, so there’s no payout. If this was supposed to be a sweet and small moment of the show, I would have no problems with it, but being the title song, the revealing of the character, the bonding with Laura - well, it’s too important to stay that small. (a very quiet audio, I don’t have a video as of right now)
  • Alfie Boe did an impressive rendition, since his range is wider again…but to me that’s what it was: impressive, not really moving, and it seems like he’s just fine drowning out Laura rather than harmonizing with her, and I mean no offense by that but I don’t appreciate it either. (video)
  • Tony Yazbeck’s version is much gentler in comparison, but manages to break free of the MM mold, and honestly might be my second favorite version, especially in this show with the altered end to the song. I don’t like it as much as ART but this is good. (video)

On the other hand. We also have this:

  • “Neverland” from the out of town production at A.R.T., pre-Broadway-bound revisions, as performed by Jeremy Jordan. This is the version I like the best. The beginning is tender, but then the key change hits and all the slow and gradual build pays off in a soaring score. The entire song is brighter in tone than any of the Broadway versions, and when Jeremy goes for the belt that Morrison’s version lacks, it isn’t a switch flip like Yazbeck almost is, or an unprecedented explosion like Boe, the transition is natural. I think the performance and orchestration choices here also compliment Laura’s add-in at the end the best, the harmony fits neatly, and no one is trying to outdo the other, and it finishes more tenderly than it began. (video)

*none of these recordings are mine and I won’t go dig up more links if these get taken down, sorry

Anyways that’s as far as a slightly elevated high school music education and obsessive love of theatre can get me for now.

“Stronger” edition: I’m not even leaving commentary on this one, just watch the acting choices and listen. (I will say I definitely prefer the “getting rid of these trappings” take rather than, say, Alfie full-on ripping his shirt open Jean Valjean style.)

Mm-hm, yeah.

I rest my case.

This is beautiful.

JJ makes me regularly question my suggestibility.

I mean...

"Close your eyes, come with me...."

Yeah, okay!

"Stay awhile."

Yes sir. Not going anywhere.

"Run away with me....”

Of course.

"If you like, I could take you. It’s just a lightyear and a day.”

Sure. Why not?

But then you get to Bonnie and Clyde or Death Note...
