The Haunted Mansion Holiday also re-opened a few days ago. This is the earliest I've ever seen the transition made, being advertised as "reopening ahead of the Halloween season".
Interestingly, Disney states it's "only available via a Virtual Queue", where visitors use the Disney app and join a queue through it, making sure they're using their MyDisney account and that their park tickets are connected. There's two daily opportunities to join it: at 7 AM and 12 PM.
Hopefully this virtual queue thing is temporary, as I've seen people saying the HMH still looks to be under construction. They may just be using it for early access at the moment, as it says on the Disneyland site:
"Even though New Orleans Square is currently being refurbished, you’ll be able to socialize with Santa Jack again soon when Haunted Mansion Holiday reopens—available via our virtual queue only, as our new stand-by queue experience hasn’t quite materialized yet. Using a virtual queue allows us to welcome back foolish mortals to this eerie estate once again, while we continue work on the surrounding area."

Disneyland Oogie Boogie has no right being this funny
One of my favorite Haunted Mansion Holiday Anniversary events had The Nightmare Before Christmas characters singing Broadway songs. However, my FAVORITE scene is where Oogie Boogie brings out Santa Claus, who is tied up, and then drags Jack Skellington out for “double or nothing”. They’re both forced to sing, naturally.
Santa notices Jack’s hands aren’t tied up like this, so he asks him to untie them. And then this happens:
Jack manages to tie himself up by accident.
Bonus: He had to get Sally to untie him.
Bonus X2: Jack and Sally’s reactions to seeing Ken Page in the flesh:
Watching this CLASSIC Haunted Mansion Holiday commercial and....it just occurred to me....
Oogie packs a bottle of....something(?)...a pair of pants with a belt buckle....
A bunch of bugs...(because of COURSE he would)....and then.....a toothbrush.
Boogie’s essentials.
Are you bummed that the Haunted Mansion Holiday isn't happening this year. Because I sure am.
I'm disappointed in general. My family had rooms booked and everything around Halloween/Christmas time this year to go to Disneyland. So far, it looks like we may have to cancel on that or plan again sometime....but I had been really looking forward to the Haunted Mansion Holiday and meeting Jack and Sally. As well with whatever TNBC stuff they had planned this year.
I'm sure other people are disappointed as well. The Oogie Boogie Bash was so successful last year and I had a blast when I went to the parks in 2019. It is a shame that was cancelled, too, for this year. Disney seems optimistic to plan for 2021. Hopefully that can happen.
It's very unclear how things are looking for Halloween/Christmas this year. I'm not sure what I will be doing for Halloween just yet. But the Haunted Mansion Holiday was definitely a disappointment for me.
do you think Tokyo Disneyland's version of haunted mansion holiday is better than the Disneyland one?
Ooof….why is this one of the hardest questions I’ve gotten? And, just for context, to those who want to know what I’m comparing exactly:
Tokyo Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion Holiday
California Disney’s Haunted Mansion Holiday:
It comes down to small details, really. But I can tell how much these differences impact the ride from my experience…
I love Tokyo’s elevator scene better - the CGI atop with Jack and Zero in Cali isn’t my favorite; I prefer the Sandy Claws head they used. And I was never a fan of how long it took to have Sally added as more of a major role in Cali’s Haunted Mansion Holiday, whereas in Tokyo’s she has a scene with the Scary Teddy playing a piano beside her. You don’t only get a “glance” at her as you’re rushing past her like in Cali’s, you can absorb the scene and admire Sally’s model more, which in my opinion is better than the one with her leaning over the tombstone.
I also love the constant detail of the Scary Teddy in Tokyo’s; how he’s in a lot of scenes, and I adore the portraits in their waiting line as much as Cali’s(although I love all the Nightmare characters in fluorescent lights in theirs…). I also have a great attachment to Oogie Boogie with that spinning wheel just before the “hitchhikers”, and Lock, Shock, and Barrel had a bit more focus as it is in Tokyo’s…Then again, how could I live without that Jack/Sally scene in the window background of Tokyo’s? It’s my favorite thing in the world, I tell you! And my second favorite thing is Jack and Sally at the beginning of theirs, too…it’s so adorable! For some reason, it feels like their version respects Jack & Sally’s relationship and includes Sally a lot more.
“Both are good” would be my definite answer, as I think they’re charming & enjoyable in their own ways and they both do Nightmare justice with their additions. I know I’m a little biased, as I have never been to Tokyo and only rode California’s…but if I really had to choose, I’d agree that Tokyo’s is better.

Disney Parks recently released a video celebrating the Haunted Mansion Holiday’s 13th anniversary. Here are a few screen grabs of some great backstage tidbits.

For Media Night (Oct 18, 2001), they had purple lighting to show off the brand new Haunted Mansion Holiday. I really wish they always did this; it was so pretty! I also wish I took more pictures and had a better camera, but hey it was 2001.
I’ll never get enough of this ride
