Recently the epilogue was asked about to Chris Sarandon and Ken Page at a panel! You can find it by searching 'Nightmare Before Christmas Q&A Panel 2022 MegaCon Orlando! Chris Sarandon and Ken Page' and it's under the YT channel 'Fast Times Vero'.

ANON! I can't thank you enough for telling me about this - I saw some Ken Page & Chris Sarandon events recently, but didn't look into them since I was away at the time. (The question is asked at 12:35)

I think this was a *really* funny question to ask to begin with - since Danny Elfman was the one who wrote the Epilogue. I didn't think they had an answer but the one they gave was PRICELESS. This is HILARIOUS ;;

"MAGIC."

I hope they weren't too uncomfortable with the question btw? Everyone seems to want to know how Jack and Sally had the skeleton kids. But it's probably not the most comfortable to answer in public, I imagine, so I hope they were fine with it? I think in another Interview somewhere Chris stated that he sees Jack as Asexual, so I wonder if that contributed for their answer? :)

One of your previous posts about Chris Sarandon was spot on he's not a dick he has what are called boundaries. Plus, nobody alive would ever want to tango with Disney's copyright lawyers unless they're another company exec. Some fans just feel so entitled that they would rather have him subjected to a lawsuit rather than respect his boundaries. If anything Chris is definitely a gentleman like Jack is and panels have said it many times Disney has copyright over the characters.

Oh! I think you’re mistaking @alwaysahiccupandastrid‘s post, which I did reblog and agree with! But it makes such a great point in defense of Chris Sarandon, who is a wonderful and talented man. I hated to learn that people truly felt this way about him. :( It’s out of his hands and he’s as polite as he can be when it comes to this matter.

Speaking of which, can we talk about how terrible it is that Disney *actually* copyrighted his voice for Jack Skellington? The fact that it can even happen baffles me. It adds to the list of reasons why Disney irks me, especially with its treatment of Nightmare Before Christmas over these years. To hear he’s under strict copyright over his own voice is honestly kind of disturbing. I’m sure he’s not the only actor out there under this sort of thing, which doesn’t make things any better....

I didn’t even know Chris was under this sort of thing to begin with, so I can see how fans would be mistaken and ask for the impression. But I don’t have any respect for people who call him a “dick” or be disrespectful towards him for it. I think we should still support Chris for unfortunately being under this sort of thing, and have this information more well-known. Just because we can’t do anything about it doesn’t mean we can’t be a little upset about the whole situation. :( Much love Chris’ way.

Have a wonderful day, anon!

I’ve seen people (mostly in YouTube comment sections) saying Chris Sarandon is a dick in real life/at cons and fan events because he refuses to do the Jack Skellington voice for fans at these events, and it just really irritates me because

  1. the man does not owe fans anything, he literally can agree or refuse to do whatever he likes even if he’s working at these events - he is human and perfectly within his rights to set boundaries
  2. not being funny but the guy is nearly 80 years old now, he really does not have to do anything he doesn’t want to, and yeah, he looks good for his age and he seems (to my knowledge) to be quite healthy and active (and may he remain that way for years to come), but my point still stands
  3. a lot of people who’ve actually done meets and greets with him or gone to his panels (not just for TNBC but for his other films too) have said he’s really polite and nice, he’s thanked them all for coming out to meet him, and he’s been described by these fans as “a perfect gentleman”, “polite”, “kind”, etc.
  4. he’s stated on a few occasions that he legally is not able to do it because Disney have copyrighted his voice (well, his “Jack voice”) since he does it for all of their licensed video games featuring Jack, their theme parks, their different shows, he’s even done ringtones etc. If he does it and it gets filmed and posted online, he could get into deep legal trouble with Disney - and I don’t think he wants to end up in court with DISNEY, especially since it would also put his job in jeopardy (he must make serious money from reprising his Jack role if we’re being honest)
  5. when he’s been filmed refusing to do the voice (in the two videos that I’ve seen, at least), he’s actually been incredibly polite about it and has explained quite clearly why he won’t do it

So I don’t think he refuses to do it because “he’s rude”/“he’s a dick” - he simply is not allowed to do the Jack voice unless it’s for an official Disney product.

Also, while on the topic… I’m not really surprised that Disney have gone as far as literally copyrighting someone’s voice to the point that they can’t do an impression of one of their characters - and a beloved/famous one at that - for fans at fan events. Disney didn’t even want to release TNBC under their banner (so they originally released it under Touchstone Pictures) because they thought it didn’t fit their family friendly brand - but the second they realized that the film had a cult following a decade later, they decided to slap their names on it and merchandise / license the absolute shit out of it. Which, you know, I can’t really complain about because yay for having TNBC merchandise, but… yeah.

The Chris Sarandon interview I mentioned - Chris is very clear in the fact that he was brought into the project later on www(.)ksat(.)com(/)entertainment(/)2013(/)10(/)29(/)sarandon-remains-proud-of-nightmare-before-christmas-as-film-classic-turns-20/

Thank you SO much, anon! I can’t express to you how grateful I am to finally find a source and learn that this was a rumor.

So crazy that this information isn’t as well-known or spread like the others! I hope this changes and that the misinformation about Chris Sarandon will stop spreading. I know it bothered me a lot to hear two conflicting things all the time while believing that both Chris and Danny were extremely talented.

I agree so much about your post about Danny Elfman. From the tidbits I heard I could never understand why they couldn't just get a voice over coach or something to work with him until he was good enough for what they wanted, they do it sometimes with actors without voice acting experience. The way they talk, it seems they didn't even approach him with the problem until they told him he was being partially replaced, and it seems especially odd since Jack speaks much less than he sings.

Yes, thank you!! I entirely agree! And to hear the situation summarized as "he didn't have the talent" is especially confusing, and disheartening.

'Danny-Elfman-not-getting-Jack's speaking-role' will always be a frustrating part of TNBC's lore to me. It's not that I don't enjoy Chris Sarandon's performance, because I do and I think he's a great fit for Jack! But a part of me can't help feeling upset on Danny's behalf since he practically wrote and projected a lot onto Jack's character. The fact that it was taken away for confusing and conflicting reasons must've been hard on him.

And that is strange, isn't it? That we hear Jack singing a lot more than he talks...It's a really good point.

This is another example of what I mean by the story changes depending on who or where you read it from. It makes the whole Danny Elfman/Chris Sarandon situation a little confusing because of it.

The Documentary went with the one 'reason' that the crew said Danny "couldn't act" and therefore had Chris Sarandon brought in to do the speaking lines. Other sources say Chris Sarandon couldn't sing, so Danny Elfman took the singing lines. These two are a little conflicting.

I've heard both of these stories repeated and written in articles. I'm not entirely sure which is true, or if they're both right. As said - this is something I have a difficult time researching because it seems members of the crew keep saying different things about the situation each time.

Update:

Turns out Chris Sarandon saying he “couldn’t sing” is actually a widespread rumor. He elaborated on his Broadway background, and that he was brought into the project for TNBC later in a 2013 article:

This makes more sense, and leads me to believe Danny did try out for Jack’s speaking voice, but was decided it wasn’t to expectation, and that’s when they brought in Chris. As he explains in the article, he was asked not to sing, as Danny had already been chosen and sang the songs. But he would’ve if they asked him to.

This also explains why Chris exactly reprises Jack’s role in the games, particularly in Oogie’s Revenge where he sings, whereas Danny doesn’t like reprising Jack’s role in most medias.

Hi! I was the anon who sent the ace Jack ask also thank you sm for answering! Since I can't send the link directly here, the video was a livestream Q&A feat. Ken Page and Chris Sarandon about 3 months ago on the YT page- GalaxyCon. Hope you can find it! :-)

Oh, no wonder I haven’t heard of this, it’s actually really recent! I unfortunately will be away this weekend so I don’t have the time to watch this now, so I’ll be leaving it here so I can watch it once I’m back. And for anyone else who would like to see this livestream!

Thank you, anon!

Hello!! I was watching a recent interview with Ken Page (Voice of Oogie) and Chris Sarandon (Voice of Jack) and at one point Chris mentioned Jack being asexual which I thought that was very valid for Jack too. Your thoughts?? :) Thank you.

That interview sounds familiar! If anyone remembers about it and has a link, I’d love to get it and possibly rewatch this again!

As for Jack being Asexual - I’m guessing it more or less comes from the ‘him-being-a-skeleton’ thing, but it’s lovely that Chris Sarandon would see Jack like that! I think being Asexual really suits him, and I adore the headcanons I see around where both him and Sally are Ace. :)

Thoughts on Mr. Danny Elfman? Also, I LOVE your account!!

*Reads your url* *Private Life intensifies* THE SKELETONS ARE…HIDDEN IN THE CLOSET—

I LOVE Danny Elfman. It’s definitely because of The Nightmare Before Christmas I started getting into him. My dad’s always been a fan of him and even attended an Oingo Boingo concert. He gave me one of their album discs for me to listen to and I’ve been hooked since. I have yet to listen to all Oingo Boingo songs though (on my to-do list!)

I really admire Elfman’s work. It’s legendary. And he really proved that through Jack Skellington, I think. I’m fully aware that him and Chris Sarandon basically shared the voice roles for him - and my god did Elfman’s voice sweep me away. Jack’s such an attractive character, and it’s no wonder his voice is among the many legendary Disney songs because of how amazing it is. “Jack’s Lament” is my favorite TNBC song ever, and it’s mainly because of Danny’s voice. (and also because the shifts, moods, and impressive lighting of that scene)

I also really loved Danny’s attitude about his old music in Oingo Boingo, how he was out to offend everybody and all. Really proved, to me at least, that you are not ever completely safe - and topics about pedophilia and such still exist. I really admired how he could play characters and nail insane perspectives. His vocal range is amazing, and it mesmerizes me how many voices he can do. I think him and Burton’s work are among the most legendary pieces in media, Nightmare and Beetlejuice included.

I’m among a minority here, but I honestly preferred Elfman playing Jack more than Chris Sarandon. *Shrugs* Elfman just gave Jack a more expressive vibe that could change from one note to another while he sang. It felt, to me, that Chris just had one tone to him, and that really showed in the games where he started singing. I wasn’t a big fan. But I really loved the character Elfman brought to Jack with the songs, and how he was able to express so much in a character through the music he both sang and composed for him. The man’s so talented.

Danny aged like my dad, tbh. I find his earlier years really attractive, in a way. But it’s his voice that does it for me. Thank you so much, btw!! I really love your blog!!
