Fan team aims to make Mega Man Legends 3 Prototype in Unity ⊟

Mega Man Legends 3 refuses to die, except for that time it totally died. The latest group to prop it up Weekend at Bernies style is the Jisaku Dash project (via Protodude), which is making a playable game in Unity – using official character models from the MML3 Devroom.

Surprise: the gameplay footage is looking pretty spot-on! And another surprise: this weird trailer is really fun.

"Let's say that, if we have all seven Dragon Balls right here, right now, and Shen Long comes up and says, 'What's your wish?' My wish would be, give me all the right tools, people, and environment to create Legends 3."

Keiji Inafune, recounting his Dragon Ball Z fanfiction continuing desire to see Mega Man Legends 3 completed, in an interview with USGamer's Jeremy Parish.

He said that since Capcom still owns the IP he can't just make it, but that he's confident he'd be able to get the team together, both from Capcom and outside, if given the opportunity to finish the cancelled 3DS project. But would he be able to convince Yamcha to join him on another adventure?

Grab Servbots in fanmade Mega Man Legends 3 game

The Mega Man Legends 3 community continues to be one of the scariest/most impressive groups to gather around a nonexistent game. Case in point: fans Blyka and fAB made a game based on a mission in the Mega Man Legends 3 Prototype, using assets from that (unreleased) demo.

According to the official description, Servbot Roundup lets you:

  • Ride around as Barrett, as seen in video footage of the Mega Man Legends 3 Prototype Version!
  • Feel the MML3 thrill as you explore an expansive, semi-accurate recreation of Teomo City
  • Collect Servbots in three increasingly difficult levels with differing positions
  • Find the fastest route to victory and submit your best times to the online high score table

I'm totally about to try this, and you can too, because it's a free browser game! Whaaaat? Compare that to the real MML3, which is nothing.

Mega Man Legends 3 rocket model. The disturbingly dedicated "100,000 Strong" fan campaign is now raising money to build a 3-foot-tall replica of the rocket (which, in the game, is supposed to be used to rescue Mega Man from the moon) and launch it somewhere in Texas, complete with a Roll cosplayer supervising the launch. They've already hit the $1000 goal!

The rocket thing is a celebration of Mega Man's 25th anniversary, and Get Me Off the Moon's first. I don't think it would work as a petition to Capcom, but as a fan event, it sounds awesome.

Translated video featuring Mega Man Legends 3 Prototype Version footage, presented by the "100,000 Strong" campaign. There's some kind of conspiracy theory over there, about Capcom omitting some of this footage from presentation in the North American Devroom in order to "sabotage the project's awareness," but as far as I'm concerned, it is a conspiracy theory and nothing more.

It's been about ten months since MML3 was canceled. I didn't realize it had been that long. Man, I was looking forward to this.

Mega Man Legends 3 Servbot drawing and screen cleaners. These items were presented to Devroom member CAP Kobun for drawing the chosen Bonne Mecha design. Sadly, the mecha won't make it into the game, because there is no game (although it was already integrated as of the Prototype trailer!), but these gifts are at least notable.

The screen cleaners were meant to be handed out at a Capcom event unveiling the game, but that event didn't happen either, so these are exceedingly rare Servbots. I, uh, would like one. Man, even without the "rarity" angle, Servbots! Too bad I didn't draw any robots or anything.

Buy: Mega Man Legends games (except for 3, obviously)

According to GamesRadar's reckoning, Nintendo Power editor Chris Hoffman was the only journalist ever to play Mega Man Legends 3. That puts him in the unique position of maybe possibly being able to answer your questions about the gameplay!

If you want to know stuff about the game -- I don't know, maybe to torture yourself or something -- you can post questions in the comments of this post. How was the framerate? How was the 3D? Did Barrett feel any different to control than Mega Man in previous games? These are all questions that ... have probably been asked several dozen times each in the comments.

Mega Man Legends 3's Barrett, dancing. YouTube user SwordMasamune extracted the real in-game model from Capcom's model viewer, and then animated it. This was done back in June, according to the YouTube posting date, so it wasn't meant as a weird eulogy to the game.

Speaking of that 3D model, it's still up, as is Aero's. So if you know how to pull these off the site (and you want them), you should save these now, just as you should every MML3-related media you can find. I think I'm still missing a few wallpapers myself.

Since Capcom's cancellation of the fan-supported Mega Man Legends 3 Project, there's been a lot of grassroots campaigning to bring it back on Twitter, Facebook, and various websites. But, uh, it's not going to work, guys.

"While Capcom has a built a strong relationship with its community and values their feedback," Capcom PR's Brian Keltner told Kotaku, "Mega Man Legends 3 development has officially ceased without plans to resume development."

Total bummer, but if the 3DS price drop wasn't enough to convince Capcom this project was worth starting again, I don't think anything will. It's done. :(

Reverge Labs (Skullgirls) reacts to Mega Man Legends 3's cancellation on its whiteboard. These images encapsulate the canned 3DS game's whole situation pretty well: sadness, resignation, anger, Servbots...

Hey, can we just give the whole Mega Man Legends series over to passionate fans like these folks, who know how to make games, and will make games?

A Mega Man Legends/Keiji Inafune moment remembered by, uh, PhallusKnifeFight. who grabbed this from /V/ or some guy named SteelAJeeg or whatever.

Inafune, who served as the producer for the Mega Man series before his departure from Capcom last October, commented on the cancellation of Mega Man Legends 3 on his blog (translated by Andriasang):

"The decision for the cancelation was out of my sphere, but as someone who took part in the development, I'd like to convey something to the staff: I'm sorry that I couldn't be of assistance. ... I'm truly sorry I couldn't take part until the end."

Inafune went on to say that he had hoped to play the Mega Man Legends 3 Prototype Version demo that was supposed to release on the 3DS's eShop, but that, too, was canned for no discernible reason. :o/

Mega Man Legends 3 cancelled :'o(

The dream has died! Killing the fan-driven "Legends Never Die" campaign before it could even take off, Capcom just announced that it's discontinued its Mega Man Legends 3 project for 3DS, as well as the MML3 Prototype demo that was planned to for the eShop.

"From the outset the MML3 Project was intended to give gamers across the world insight and input into the development process. Part of this process includes an assessment of whether the title will go into full production, and is based on a number of criteria with input from different sectors of the company.
Unfortunately it was not felt that the Mega Man Legends 3 Project met the required criteria, and it is with regret that we must announce that the Mega Man Legends 3 Project has been cancelled, meaning that Capcom will not be releasing the Prototype or the full game."

Capcom claims the project's termination had nothing to do with Mega Man series producer Keiji Inafune's recent resignation. I wonder what specific factors or failed criteria led to the cancellation?

Mega Man Legends 3 artwork (in-progress) by Hideki Ishikawa. I'm really enjoying the behind-the-scenes stuff Capcom is posting about the development of this 3DS game, though when you think about it, all of the stuff they've been showing us and letting us vote on has been somewhat cosmetic. Stuff like "what Mega Man's costume will look like" or "our choices for voice actresses" -- although Capcom did take votes on which enemies to include, which actually touches the mechanical design of the game.

I'm not sure if the "Our game isn't greenlit!!!" thing is accurate or a gimmick, but either way it's motivating the team to continue giving us updates on the gradual development of the game, and post stuff like this, so that's cool.

Final Mega Man suit design for Mega Man Legends 3, voted by fans following Capcom's Devroom project. You can see Mega Man without his helmet here.

It's all looking very slick so far. Maybe this game won't be the disaster I'm expecting since Inafune left..

Okay, so Nintendo delayed the eShop's planned May launch to June 6, making the actual arrival of the 3DS as a complete gaming platform a couple weeks late. But at least we'll get to play the long-awaited first taste of Mega Man Legends 3 when it does launch, right?

Noooooooope.

Showing a shocking lack of understanding about the nature of a "prototype," Capcom has delayed the Mega Man Legends 3 Prototype Version release, to improve its quality. It'll announce the new date soon.

I guess this does reduce the heartbreak Capcom will suffer when its experimental "prototype" release is inevitably outsold by a Game Boy game. And, I guess, having the best possible showing at first will help the Prototype Version get the full game greenlit.

Following yesterday's reveal of the Mega Man Legends 3 Prototype Version, Capcom has opened the Japanese site for the 3DS title. It features info about the game and the downloadable (paid) demo, along with a 3D model viewer for new characters Barrett and Aero. You can inspect Barrett in close detail and from multiple angles to confirm for yourself that the Prototype Version protagonist is, in fact, not Mega Man WHAT THE HELL CAPCOM (Kidding [kind of]).

I'm also pretty excited about the new downloads. All the previous wallpapers are there, for both phone and PC, as well as a new Barrett wallpaper -- and Servbot Twitter icons, which you better believe I downloaded right the hell as soon as I saw them. There might have been some audible cheering.
