Fatal Frame trailer is “super spoopy” ⊟

Like, officially. Thanks, Nintendo! Please put that content descriptor on the ESRB rating. Anyway, Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water actually does look hella creepy, and I’m definitely going to try it as Spoop Season approaches! I’m going to try it for free, even, since it’s “free-to-start.”

Then, IF I DARE (to pay $50), I can play the whole thing.

Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water releasing as “free-to-start” eShop game ⊟

While Europe can look forward to a limited edition physical bundle for the latest Fatal Frame entry, North America will receive the Wii U game on October 22 as a digital-only release -- not an ideal situation for some, but it’s more ideal than an every-other-region-but-the-U.S. release. Right before Halloween, you’ll be able to download Maiden of Black Water and play "the prologue, chapter 1, and most of chapter 2 for free" -- you can also purchase the full $49.99 game from the eShop or a menu inside the trial.

Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water looking nice and creepy ⊟

Good sign for a horror game, maybe, if its E3 trailer opens with a death?

How did I miss that this game uses the Wii U GamePad for the camera? This is great and smart. Spirit Camera could arguably be said to handle it the same way, but it was only sorta Fatal Frame. This comes out in the fall!

Subtitled trailer for the new Fatal Frame ⊟

Cheers to PepsimanGB for subtitling the trailer Tecmo Koei put out last week for Fatal Frame: The Raven-Haired Shrine Maiden. I was one of the people who asked for subtitles when he offered to put this video together, so it would've been a jerk move if I didn't share this after he went through all that trouble.

Again, this releases for the Wii U in Japan on September 27.

Fatal Frame: The Raven-Haired Shrine Maiden ⊟

Even though it's not a handheld game and the horror series hasn't made it to the West in some time (not counting the Spirit Camera spin-off), I love Fatal Frame so I had to share this new trailer from the Wii game. This time around, players will use the Wii U GamePad like a camera, moving it around to follow ghosts in order to stun and capture them.

"It is set in Hikamiyama, a sacred mountain with a huge lake at its summit from which water gushes abundantly throughout the mountain. It’s a mountain of death, and only those who choose on their own to die go there. They enter the mountain at oumagatoki (the witching hour), when the boundary between the world of the living and the world of the dead is blurred. The game’s story revolves around the concept of water.
The protagonist is named Kozukata Yuuri. She can see those who have been spirited away and captured in the world of the dead and return them to this world. Responding to the requests of those who have been taken, Yuuri visits Mt. Hikamiyama."

Nintendo will release the Tecmo Koei-developed title in Japan on September 27, a day after the debut of Fatal Frame's live-action film.

Spirit Camera is $11 at Amazon! Not a bad price, especially since you can snag 40 Club Nintendo coins after you register this. And it's the closest thing to a new Fatal Frame game we've gotten in North America in seven years.

Other notable sales going on right now:

North America is getting spooky videos of its own for Spirit Camera -- continuing the tradition Japanese horror films adapted for Western audiences, replacing unsettling scenes and creepy moments with surprise shocks.

Here's the dramatic short movie that was shown for Spirit Camera in Japan, in case you missed it.

Spirit Camera to haunt 3DSes in the U.S.

Though we didn't get Fatal Frame 4 in the States, the latest game from the horror series' team at Tecmo Koei, Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir, will release here on April 13th -- Friday the 13th, naturally.

Nintendo provided this description for the augmented reality (with the help of a special booklet) 3DS game:

Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir introduces a mysterious girl named Maya who has been hiding in the shadows of an old house. Players must help Maya break free from a terrifying curse by aiding her escape from the clutches of a malevolent woman in black. By using the Nintendo 3DS system’s built-in camera, players can view Maya in their own surroundings as the game’s eerie events unfold.
Included with the game is a 16-page AR Book, known as the “diary of faces” in the game’s Story Mode, which serves as a gateway into this haunting experience. As players view the book’s images through the lenses of the Nintendo 3DS camera, they enter its pages using augmented reality. At times, pages will come to life in the form of movies, revealing past events that offer insights into the mysteries surrounding the diary. In other moments, characters will emerge from the pages into the player’s world via augmented reality in the form of evil spirits that attack from all directions.

I'm curious to see if Nintendo of America will adopt the same budget pricing as the Japanese edition -- Tetris Axis launched with a $29.99 tag, so it's possible! I also wonder if we'll get a subtitled or adapted version of the Japanese promotional short film.

Here is the first set of screens the publisher has put out for Spirit Camera. I'm unsure why they chose the more silly-looking images of the mask-wearing ghost boy instead of screens showing the creepier ghouls.

[Thanks, NintenDaan!]

Ghost Camera dramatic short movie. I know this is 12 minutes long, and it begins like a standard promotional clip with Japanese girls playing the latest 3DS game from the Fatal Frame team, but trust me, it starts to turn into something else. It's definitely worth watching if you're interested in the game, or Japanese horror films. Very awesome way to promote Ghost Camera!

The 8-4 Play folks talk a little about this game in their latest podcast, and I was surprised to hear how popular "finding ghosts in photos" is in Japan -- like, apparently there are TV series and tourist attractions around the phenomenon? Maybe they care more about spirits over there because Asian ghosts happen to be a million times more creepy than Western ones.

On a related note, Capcom released a new viral video for Resident Evil: Revelations that's pretty interesting, too.

Shinrei Camera (Project Zero/Fatal Frame 3DS)'s "AR Notebook." When the Tecmo/Nintendo horror game ships in Japan on January 12, it'll come with this little booklet, full of things that seem to come to life when looked at through the game. How eerie!

The rest of the game is pretty damn scary too:

Scans of Shinrei Camera, a new 3DS game co-developed by Tecmo's Fatal Frame team and Nintendo.

As you can surmise from the title and these shorts, it's a horor game that takes advantage of the 3DS's augmented reality capabilities. The game will come with an "AR Notebook" that you can point your camera at in-game to reveal hidden messages, clues, and even demons.

1UP translated Famitsu's preview of the game, with comments from producer Keisuke Kikuchi:

"Shinrei Camera will feature three game modes: a story-driven adventure set in the same world as the rest of the Fatal Frame series; a minigame collection that uses the AR notebook; and a 'ghost camera' mode that allows you to snap supernatural pictures of yourself and your friends.
'Compared to previous Fatal Frame titles ... there isn't as much actual time spent with the game itself -- that's because you'll also be spending time turning pages on the AR notebook and looking around in real life instead of moving your character around.'"

Like Fatal Frame IV, Nintendo will publish this in Japan, and has no plans yet to release this in the U.S.
