Hobonichi releasing Satoru Iwata book ⊟

The Japanese planner company headed by Earthbound/Mother series creator Shigesato Itoi will release a book collecting thoughts from Nintendo’s late CEO and president Satoru Iwata.

Hobonichi director Yasuhiro Nagata tweeted photos for the book’s cover and promised to share more details next month. @gosokkyu points out that Nagata “was a long-time Famitsu editor and perhaps the most ardent reporter on Mother 2, Earthbound 64, and Mother 3.“

The book is expected to feature Iwata’s words originally published on Hobonichi’s Japanese blog and Nintendo’s site. Itoi (and Bouillon, RIP) and Iwata were very close, with the latter helping complete development on Earthbound and even serving as Hobonichi’s IT manager to get its site running. Itoi shared a touching farewell after his friend passed away in 2015, and I can’t think of a better company to put out something like this.

While Hobonichi has translated its popular Techo planners in recent years, it hasn’t created English editions for many of its other products. So cross your fingers for a publisher outside of Japan to pick this one up!

These Zelda books likely do numbers for Dark Horse, so naturally the publisher will produce an English version of Breath of the Wild - Master Works. Titled The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild-Creating a Champion for the West, this artbook serves as a companion to the Switch game and its DLC:

“This book features nearly fifty pages of sketches and official illustrations from Takumi Wada, two-hundred and ninety-six pages of design artwork and commentary about the making of the game from the creators, a fifty-five-page historical section that divulges the history of Hyrule as it is known in-game, and interviews with key members of the development team--Hidemaro Fujibayashi, Satoru Takizawa, Takumi Wada, and Eiji Aonuma. Witness the making of a champion!”

It also has concept art for a contemporary version of Link in jeans, riding his motorcycle and playing guitar with crooked fingers that look like Midoriya’s busted digits after flicking around his One for All Power.

Amazon is taking preorders, scheduling the book’s release for November 20.

The 8-bit, Ocarina of Time, and Wind Waker amiibo will release this holiday season. They will work as standard Link and Zelda amiibo, but the figures will also have special functionality with the upcoming Breath of Wild game.

As for The Legend of Zelda: Art and Artifacts, while the 400+ page artbook isn’t coming out until February 2017, it’s already up for preorder ($23.99).

That’s a huge Happy Home Designer book ⊟

Japan already has at least four guides dedicated to Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, and they’re all ginormous. Which one’s the biggest, though? That would be Famitsu’s, as shown here by Mintymura.

Here’s the page count on the books I spotted at Amazon:

This is just a reminder that Viz Media’s reprint of the Shotaro Ishinomori-illustrated comic based on The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is out today! Featuring artwork from the creator of Kamen Rider, series originally appeared in the pages of Nintendo Power more than 20 years ago.

Amazon has the book for $13.89 (compared to its sticker price of $20). While you’re grabbing that, you can pick up a Hyrule Historia hardback if you don’t have it yet, along with the Zelda manga box set. Scans via Link’s Hideaway!

Chainmail Bikini preview: Life +1 ⊟

All week, we’ve been featuring samples from Chainmail Bikini, the ”comics anthology celebrating female gamers”. The Kickstarter-ed book features a number of portable gaming-themed stories, like these pages from artist Buntoo (Quick bio: “Drawing and gaming since childhood. ‘You know the down in Phoenix Down? It’s DOWN... like feathers! Wow!!’”).

Chainmail Bikini will offer 200+ pages of comics about video games, tabletop RPGs, collectible card games, and more from 40 cartoonists. It sounds like a really awesome project, and we’d be happy if you pledged some cash to get a copy of the book and to help the participating artists get paid even more!

More preview pages from Chainmail Bikini: Connections, Pocket Worlds, Achievement Unlocked, and Hermia.

Amazon has the upcoming reprint for Shotaro Ishinomori's The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past comic -- originally serialized in Nintendo Power more than 20 years ago -- up for preorder. It's listed at $16.94 right now, a few bucks off its list price. Viz Media will release the book in North America on May 5. Links/scans via GoNintendo and Link's Hideaway

Zelda: A Link to the Past comic will be reprinted ⊟

Krackoom...  Viz Media announced it will reprint the Link to the Past comic that originally appeared across a dozen issues of Nintendo Power back in 1992. The collection, an adaptation of the SNES game by renowned manga artist Shotaro Ishinomori (Super Sentai, Kamen Rider) will release on May 15. Pretty awesome to see Viz Media pick this up, considering how much the collection that released back in 1993 is going for.

The Majora's Mask 3D hardware bundle for the New 3DS XL might be impossible to reserve, but you can preorder this collector's edition of the 352-page guide from Amazon now, currently priced at $25.25 ($10 off its list price).

The standard guide is just $5 cheaper, though it doesn't feature the gold oil stamped hardcover, gilded pages, or sheet of "Character Clings" (stickers?). Both editions feature labeled maps, item chcklists, detailed walkthroughs, and a detailed monsters and enemies section.

The Prima guide will release alongside the 3DS game on February 13.

Nintendo included its HQ building in this company guide ⊟

Before Mario posted photos from Nintendo's beautiful company guide book for 2013, including these shots for a fold-out section. The pages mimic the drab, window-dominated exterior of Nintendo's headquarters in Kyoto, Japan.

What's great is you can prop the book up and pull the pages out to form the cube building. And you can peek over the top at what goes on behind those boring windows, to see employees having fun at work, creating colorful and exciting games. Check out the cartridge art prototypes!

The photos also showcase another point Nintendo is emphasizing lately -- that the company is striving to create a gender-diverse workplace. I'd love to get a hold of one of these books, but Nintendo only hands them out to potential employees who pass the company's initial application process. Via Sergio!

Would read this StarFox book ⊟

Curtis Tiegs -- who also illustrated this great StarFox piece -- designed this tribute to look like "some sort of old book cover." As far as judging books by their covers go, this looks like a charming read (possibly the source material of The Fantastic Mr. StarFox)? Found this via Xombiedirge, by the way.

We haven't done many straight-up fanart posts lately -- not sure what the demand is for those? I felt especially compelled to post this one because my wife has spent the past few months working very hard on this Fox and Fireflies fairy tale/site for her degree project, so I've had foxes on my mind. Yeah, she is way better at making websites than I am.

Mercenary Kings: Master Codex

Rad, someone's making a Nintendo Player's Choice-style strategy guide/art book for Mercenary Kings -- rather, Off Base Productions will make the guide if it can raise $65,000 on Kickstarter. That's a lofty goal, but the rewards are nice: digital and print copies, art prints, miniature Mercenary Kings arcade machine replicas, and more.

Tribute won't release Mercenary Kings to PlayStation 4 and Windows until later this year, but you can still buy/play an Early Access build of the game on Steam. And, hey, we actually have a code to give away! Leave a comment, reblog this, or send a tweet to let us know why you're excited about Mercenary Kings, and we'll announce a winner tomorrow on our Twitter.

Amazon already has Prima's six-book collection of Zelda guides discounted by more than a third of its sticker price ($180), four months before its November release. It's still pretty expensive, but the set does include some decent extras.

If you preordered this for $153 a few days ago, you should receive a credit for the reduced price.

As we established this morning, Zelda is one of the best franchises in the world. It’s so good, that you will want to own a box set of Prima game guides for six of the series’ entries. Yes, you could save money by printing out a bunch of guides from GameFAQs and just putting them in a binder, but some people like to have nice things.

This is a $180 nice thing ($153 at Amazon), and it comes with hardcover collectors edition guides for Ocarina of Time 3D, Spirit Tracks, Phantom Hourglass, The Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, and Skyward Sword, the last of which has been revised and expanded with 100 extra pages. Each of the books feature gilded edges on their pages.

Also included in the set is the treasure chest with a magnetic clasp, a certificate of authenticity with a signature and message from series director Eiji Aonuma, and a 7.5"x2.5" metallic bookmark and its protective case. Prima will release the package right before the holidays, on November 26.

Monster Hunter Beginner’s Guide

Monster Hunter fansite Culty took on a very important job: writing a guide to help Monster Hunter neophytes pick up the idiosyncratic series. The Monster Hunter Beginner’s Guide is available either as a $9 ebook or a $25 print edition, which includes a super cute Nyan Jirou print.

Culty is giving the book away along with copies of the game and a lot of other fun stuff, to one lucky person who signs up for the mailing list. If you want just a bit of it for free, check out a four-page preview. It’s just about armor!

I’m thinking about reading this before I get into Monhun (although I’m not going to be playing at launch, likely, just because I don’t have the time at the moment). Monster Hunter is kind of intimidating.
