I don't know whether someone has already asked about this or you've already talked about it but I thought of something. There's this thing with the grenade launcher being a symbol for performing!Dean's facade coming down, right? So I noticed that it was always Sam who kept Dean from using it. Could it be a symbol for the fact that ultimately, the brodependency was keeping Dean back because he still felt like he had to maintain the strong parental role for his /child/?

I’d love to hear @mittensmorgul thoughts on this actually, as she’s the one I saw talking heaps about the grenade launcher this season… that ok Mittens?!

Personally absolutely, this is a key part of the Performing!Dean facade, that he is Sam’s parent and as such needs to protect him from anything, even parts of himself that he sees as unfit parent-wise, it’s a standard parent - child dynamic, especially for a single parent, to put the child first before indulging in what they want themselves.

It reminds me of the parents who say that they rediscovered life and go travelling / buy a villa in Spain or become circus acrobats or whatever, once the kids go off to college, because they rediscover themselves after repressing it for so long for the kids, while the kids are nonethewiser and often like WTF? I didn’t know you would have wanted to do that? You could have! I wouldn’t have stopped you! But the parents see that they have to put the childs needs before their own…

I think the brodepedency is definitely a big part of why Dean felt that he had to hold back, it wasn’t Sam’s intention of course, whereas Sam’s intention was to stop him using the grenade launcher, until the time was right… but yeah, it still fits in the sense that a large part of it is Sam even if it isn’t intentional on his part.

Hi! First, I love your blog and your meta, it's so perfect and it gives me life! Now the ask part. I've seen lots of people talking about it, including one of your last posts, and I was hoping you could explain me the "granade launcher is a metaphor for Destiel". I think I've missed something, and I'm not getting it. Thanks! ♡

Hi! Thank you so much :)

I think @mittensmorgul is the one that talk about it the most, @floralmotif definitely posted about it after 12x11, it’s a great metaphor and I love it :)

So, there are a few aspects to this.

The theory of Chekhov’s gun: “If it's not essential, don't include it in the story. The term has come to mean "an insignificant object that later turns out to be important." For example, a character may find a mysterious necklace that turns out to be the power source to the Doomsday Device, but at the time of finding the object it does not seem important. The necklace was essential to the story, but its introduction downplayed its importance.” - TV Tropes.

This is like... the key to Oz, Dean’s necklace that glows in the  presence of God, things like that. People can also be Checkhov’s gun, eg. the rom-com where the ‘ideal partner’ is introduced as the BFF at the beginning and while the protagonist’s storyline unfolds it turns out that this person is the endgame. Kind of in the way that Crowley could be the Chekhov’s gun this season you know?

Anyway... the grenade launcher is one this season. It keeps being mentioned (12x05,12x08,12x11,12x20), to the point that if it doesn't go off it is... grenade-baiting ;) well, thats the term Mittens uses and I’ve latched onto it cos its so true!

It then is so highly also linked to Dean’s macho facade as well as his desperately wanting to use it but being held back... we wonder what that could possibly be linked to?!

So yeah, a lot of us link the grenade launcher to Destiel and / or Dean’s bisexual facade and therefore a metaphorical link hopefully as to when Dean does eventually get to fire the grenade launcher as also accepting his bisexual side / letting all the toxic masculinity facade down and / or canonically accepting he is in love with Cas.

Hence there are also some jokes going around as to how funny it would be if it was Cas who ended up using it in the end ;)

Anyway, one of my favourite things is how, *cough* Cas is not scared of the grenade launcher as it, umm... goes off in his face, and just... let’s it happen ;)
