Like... I can’t help but giggle at people getting upset because it’s been “no-homoed”.... that’s the whole poiiiiiiiiiiint. It’s like the giant ass pause after the romantically lit, Romeo & Juliet reminiscent “I do” Destiel reunion where you’re like OMG IS HE GONNA DO IT? and he’s just like Um yeah, welcome back PAL.

FUCKING FACEPALM.

You’re supposed to feel that way.  You’re supposed to be like

My wishlist for season 13 was that it was going to become so obvious that it’s no longer never was the SHOW no-homoing Dean/Cas’ feelings but now Dean and Cas obviously holding back and no-romancing their ‘moments’ when we, the audience, can fully see that they have these feelings and are holding back.

It’s now so obvious? No? That’s exactly what’s happening! People are on the edge of their seats like WTF IS HAPPENING? New people are every day telling me that they’re now aware of Destiel and how they feel unrequited love.  

PEOPLE ARE FACEPALMING AT THEM NOT BEING HONEST. BECAUSE WE KNOW NOW. IT’S BLATANT, EVEN THE GA CAN NOW SEE THAT THEY’RE IN LOVE WITH EACH OTHER AND ARE HOLDING THEMSELVES BACK.

IT’S FUCKING FANTASTIC!

What do we need? Flashing neon lights?! I mean we actually HAD a huge neon cross under which Dean said “I do”. Jesus on a cracker cos he ain’t on no flatbread.

Cas is out of the depression - a new start.

Dean is opening up and accepting who he really is more and more - leading to a new start.

They both think the other isnt in love with them and they dont deserve it anyway but clearly both want something and need … wait for it …

A NEW START.

I mean this is such a standard romantic trope I’m just… ???

my friend who watched the ep with me said the 'weird feeling' people have been talking about is the way Cas acted after the hug - if you look closely he's almost frowning in few scenes (and not in a Cas-like "IDK what that means" way) when looking at Dean and he seems more subdued, or at least his emotions are. Where earlier we could read a thousand things from the way he looked at Dean, now he seems more closed off?

They literally just pointed out in the last episode WHY THIS IS THE CASE!

Season 4-8: Cas doesn’t understand emotions, he might have fallen in love with Dean but he doesn’t understand it. Duty always comes first anyway.

Season 9-12: Cas knows what he feels is love (figures it out while human) but he has no self worth and spirals into depression, he doesn’t feel he deserves love.

Meanwhile also: 12x12 established the sacred oath and 13x04 established that he feels Dean does not love him back.

Season 13: He rises out of the depression but all the other elements still stand.

He now feels resigned to the fact that he has these feelings but they’re not reciprocated. This makes him sad although still happy to be around Dean and see him happy and safe, but he’s also awkward, a little emotionally stunted and ultimately pretty dejected.

And Dean feels the same way.

While Cas was in the empty, he resigned himself to forever remaining in the friend zone. Which is why he is acting more withdrawn towards Dean now that he is back.  He has been acting withdrawn from Dean since 12x12, and is partly why he probably decided to leave on his own the episode following. Then 12x19 comes and the entire episode Cas acts like the best friend that made it awkward by spilling the beans about his feelings.  

Then there is Dean. When Cas died. and Dean thought it was for good, all the emotions he regretted not sharing and suppressed bubbled up to the surface. Now that Cas is back again it will be interesting to see how Dean manages to reconcile how he feels and how to act towards Cas. I really hope they address the severity of his grief compared to Sam’s while Cas was dead.

I MEAN LOOK AT THEIR TWO FACIAL REACTIONS - REACTIONS THAT THE OTHER CANNOT SEE.

This is important! The other can't see their face and their emotions shine through in this moment when the rest of the scene screams "holding back", pregnant pauses (I do... pal) and partial honestly (Cas remembering the empty but not telling them of course that he was tortured with the "fact" that Dean doesn't love him).

Both of them are doing the same "oh god I'm hugging you and I'm glad we are back together, but I want so much more, but I can't have it" resigned face.

SERIOUSLY?!! We've had so much blatant exposition as to WHY they both feel this way over the years but re emphasised and textualised so recently to lead to this point and the moments to follow.

God I love this show.

Okay but what I can’t get my head around is that for Jensen this scene was

Understated

Because we are all sitting here dying over Dean’s face and the hug and everything about it being so destiel it hurts… But to Jensen this was understated? As in he was expecting more? And since he is basically in Deans head this means that he thinks Dean WOULD have wanted MORE from this moment?

Because holy crap guys if that is the case then I’m sorry but Jensen knows. I think that “destiel doesn’t exist” gif is now 100% null and void.

EXACTLY! Understated means there is MORE TO BE STATED.

As in Dean is holding something back.

Whatever could that BE? 

Considering he just called him pal and has previously called him brother, yelled about how he is family and is telling him to come HOME. 

WHATEVER ELSE IS THERE THAT IS NOT STATED?

We just don’t know!

Its the use in the show that is important, the language meaning is the same.

Buddy is historically what Dean calls Cas. It’s his go to. It’s his own personal no homo (sure he uses it for other people and bunnies etc too but it’s specifically known in relation to Cas).

John though quite obviously (it jumped to my mind immediately after I was like wtf Dean?) uses Pal.

So by ditching using the name “Buddy” after Buddy literally died having been the horrible toxically masculine bad guy shape shifter only 2 episodes ago and by using the name that JOHN used in a season that is focusing so much on the memory of John (he’s come up in EVERY episode so far) and specifically regarding Cas on Dean and his needing to work past the ghost of John and the negative influence in his life in order to embrace who he really is and who he really loves and what he really wants ...

THIS IS A HUGE DEAL!

Cas is a drama queen and a high maintenance husband so :p

But I guess realistically maybe? 

But then come on I’m 1000000% sure Cas could feel Dean’s longing and knew exactly where he was, he’s been visually and emotionally screaming longing at us for 5 episodes.

What I would give for them to address that though... sigh

Ok but tonight? I've seen lots of spec about the last scene being Cas calling Dean on the phone but...

what if...

Cas calls Dean earlier on, Dean assumes it's someone using Cas to get to him (they've seen Asmodeus shift and Mia did last episode) so hangs up, angry as hell. There's a blatant "why Cas not mom" moment between Dean and Sam, Dean is distraught all episode.

They then meet Billie and it brings up hang on? If Billie is back??!!!! What about Cas?!!

The last scene isn't Cas calling Dean but Cas being physically near them and appearing, we hear "Hello Dean", see Dean's incredulous face - immediate cut to black.

The hug and big reunion is the opener next week leaving them free for a full MotW western episode a la 8x08 (Dabb episode).

That's what I'd write anyway ;)

We have got to be cool about 13x06 because the concept plus character reunion plus wtf is going on why is this happening why are we bringing back Dean’s cowboy fetish aspect of it is making this all very hard to think rationally about. It’s very irrational :P

I mean did they just watch 6x18 again as Dabb research, like, Dabb’s on the writers’ butts to mirror him and use his theeemes and they have a great big pinboard with all his episodes on - and the 6x18 has no text, it’s just a single glossy large photo of Dean with the Colt and the hat after the stand off but before he remembers to stop roleplaying his dreams… You know the face. You KNOW it. And Perez wandered over to it and just, like, pulled the photo off the pinboard without stopping to remove the pins, and he was like, “I got this” and Dabb was like “you crazy bastard, go wild. WILD WILD WEST” and then the whole room was hollering and - 

I have no idea how a TV writers’ room works.

Anyway please remember that this feeds into a Buckleming episode with a really alarming description so it’s only going to be fun and games for maybe the middle 2 blocks of the episode between getting Cas back and shit hitting the fan so there actually is genuine cause for reining in your expectations and making room for the nonsense to only last long enough to whet the appetite before we have to get back to the regularly scheduled nonsense and drama mill. We’re only 6 episodes in and I think the entire show after that turns into the Wayward Sisters run up where things are REALLY going to get messy to leave them a spin off worth of clean up to do :P

Urfg this episode is so gonna channel Dabb's 6x18 for the fun and 8x08 for the angst (and probably the separation at the end, I just hope they part as amicably if not more than the end of 8x08).

I love that Dabb era just feels like Dabb is the headteacher and giving out homework to the new teachers to in turn get the kids to learn their lessons properly and just as he wants it ;)
