That was his first assignment away from K-2. He’d run numerous Imperial covert ops by that point, but apparently Senator Mothma wanted Draven to pick someone with top credentials to keep an eye on Saw Gerrera.

Orphaned, idealistic and barely 19 - Cassian blended right in with the Partisans. And Gerrera - paranoid and unpredictable as he was - was actually more prescient and acute than Cassian expected. In his heart, he knew that the Rebellion is in no place to judge Gerrera’s cause. They had no right to muddle his faction with their internal politics. And so it was all good: Cassian was able to send reassuring status reports back to Mothma, all while beginning to gain more access to the man himself.

That is, until, Gerrera’s top aide - this 16-year-old who goes by Kestrel Dawn with unruly hair and an even more unruly temperament - returns from successfully orchestrating a sabotage on Onderon. Cassian would probably go down in Partisan history as the biggest idiot in the galaxy for challenging Kestrel in an argument. But after a few recons and raids and several “I got you” and “thanks for that back there”, Cassian recalled his recruitment training. The problem is, he couldn’t decide if he was doing his job or he just wanted to see her again after this assignment is over.

In the end, it was an abrupt farewell - he was needed for an urgent matter on Coruscant. He left her a note. 6 months later, he heard from the young Rebellion Private who inherited his Partisan assignment that Kestrel left the Partisans. Rumour has it that she is a daughter of an Imperial Science Officer named Erso.

This time, he decided to track her down. Little did he know, she was also looking for him.
