Reblog if you’re the family witch
I’ve gotten alot of questions lately on some good books to pick up for those new to witchcraft or wanting to learn more about it and here’s my short list of some great books to grab for just such an occasion. Above all though I highly recommend Silver Ravenwolf’s Solitary Witch The Ultimate Book of Shadows, it’s literally the closest thing to a witchcraft encyclopedia and it’s very easy to read. Love and Light!
uhm no please don’t read Silver Ravenwolf’s books
yes, don’t. not because they’re “fluffy” or because they don’t witch “correctly” but because they are bigoted, hateful, and inaccurate.
Building An Altar On The Cheap: Where To Look
Just about anywhere can have things you can use for your altar. Right now Halloween and Thanksgiving are on the way, so supplies are in abundance. It can be a little harder during other times of the year, but right now the world is your oyster, so gogogo! Last week on a trip to Wal-Mart I found a pack of four small black candles for $2. I just went to Dollar Tree and got Two white taper canndles Two glass champagne glasses Set of four small red scented candles Small round mirror plate Candle holder Pack of two black salsa bowls ‘silver’ serving plate Candy corn For $9. That’s candles that can be used for the god and goddess Glasses for drink offerings Candles just cause candles Pretty decoration Offering bowl Offering plate Food offering You’ve got a lot of basics of your altar right there. Party stores are good too. Birthday candles come in loads of colours, are small, and cheap ($2 will often buy you a pack of 12 with 4 different colours). They sometimes have Halloween stuff year round too. Craft stores. Craft stores. Motherfucking craft stores. There’s a Michaels crafts 30 minutes from where I live and they always have coupons, sometimes up to 40% off an item. Joanne’s does the same. The day after Halloween they are always clearing stuff out and you can find witchy looking bottles, jars, decorations, all for like 50% off. Some things I found on the Michael’s website.
At Wal-Mart last week I found candles, small cauldron bowls, LED candles, and Halloween colored ribbons (I love ribbons for poppets/binding spells). Another fantastic source is yard sales, especially estate sales. Estate sales often happen when a house is being sold and needs to be cleared up, often when an older family member passes. Yes, very sad, but I’m sure we all know how much stuff grandmas love to collect ‘just in case’ (my own has a bedroom dedicated to ‘just in case’). Thrift stores are in the same group. You can always find candles, bowls, cups, old sets of silver, tons of things! Look around you. Just looklooklook and look not just at the item sitting before you, but the item it could be. Don’t just see the old dinged up pewter bowl at Thriftco. See what it could be with some polish and, hey, that plate next to it is fancy looking and pewter and if you turned it upside down it fits the bowl just right. A little glue and now you have a fancy bowl. If you find glass or copper there are how-tos all over the net for etching deisgns onto them. Nothing is just what it seems to be, if anyone should know that it’s witchy folk. I can’t decide the next one, should it be on setting up something to have your altar on, or on a certain piece (like offering bowl, chalice etc.) and things you can use/crafts to make them?
