It’s beautiful and humbling and incredible that Izuku still wants Katsuki after all the bullshit, but it is also a form of poetic cruelty that, after all his efforts to thwart it, Katsuki also wants Izuku after all the bullshit. Like Izuku looks like a model victim in the situation, and in a lot of ways he is, but he has in fact inadvertently worn Katsuki down for almost the entirety of their lives to the point that it feels pretty suspect to believe that Katsuki could accept anybody else on the same intimate level as Izuku. Izuku chose to admire and follow Katsuki pretty much every day despite it all and Katsuki chose to tell him to go the fuck away pretty much every day and only now is it even remotely clear to Katsuki that in this key struggle, Izuku has won out. Like Katsuki’s lost this one big time and he doesn’t even know it yet

Like I don’t give a shit if you ship it romantically but there’s undeniably an Izuku-shaped hole in Katsuki’s heart and soul formed by and because of the slow erosion of their relationship and nobody else can fill it. They are not “soulmates” or “twin stars” because they were born to be together - they, and the reality of their environments and circumstances, beat the shit out of each other emotionally and physically until they were formed to mirror and fit into one another like puzzle pieces because it was the only possible shape they could take. It’s tragic. It’s lovely. It’s hilarious. It is schadenfreude at its finest. It is the epitome of a crazy, stupid, borderline unbelievable yet emotionally visceral love conquers all story and it’s about snot-nosed teenaged fanboys

Since people are reblogging this from the old blog, I must give my addendum:

Katsuki knew. He knew long ago he had lost but he knew Izuku was not ready to hear it or even fathom this is what they are and were doing. Katsuki has held onto that apology not because he was too proud to say it, but because he was waiting for Izuku to be ready to hear it.

And he ran to him in the hospital when he realized that they were out of time. Izuku may never have been ready to hear it, but Katsuki needed to say it anyway. Izuku is under no obligation to accept the apology or forgive Katsuki, but Katsuki still deserved to be heard. He deserved to have the chance to be himself authentically and truthfully instead of continuing to play the roles that were more “comfortable” and “manageable” and stay out of Izuku’s way - especially when Izuku’s immediate next move out of the hospital was to try his best to sever all emotional and earthly ties. Katsuki could finally stop treating Izuku “like he was nothing” but it isn’t right that he’d let Izuku treat him the same way, in Izuku’s own way, for so long.

Does Izuku Think His Feelings For Katsuki Are Gross? (or, DvK2's Endless Emporium of Nuance)

This is a pretty common sentiment I see repeated, and we all know the source of it: Deku vs. Kacchan 2.

Original Japanese and official English translation.
Crunchyroll subtitles

In one translation, Izuku expresses discomfort over this topic; in the other, he outright declares it to be gross.

That is quite the difference. I gotta say, Crunchyroll’s direct “This is gross” kind of shocks me, because it functionally ignores the key adverb “sasuga ni” and translates the line the same as you would if he hadn’t said it at all. The official manga translator, on the other hand, clearly made a decision about what Izuku meant by that phrase and then dispersed that meaning across the line as a whole.

So I understand why people have this straight-forward interpretation.

I’m here to offer some linguistic nuance, because my main problem with “Izuku thinks his feelings are gross” is not that it is completely wrong. It’s that it isn’t the whole story.
