at some point we gotta acknowledge that getting the majority of your news and takes and general opinions from tumblr is not meaningfully different than getting it from tiktok even though on here it's in textual form. understanding the world through the lens of viral videos vs understanding it through breathless unsourced text posts written by dykeastarion69

A quick reminder that the Associated Press is totally free, and also often covers the news stories that Tumblr users say no one is covering. NPR is also free. So is ProPublica.

Also, here's a chart that might be helpful, in terms of determining bias and reliability: Interactive Media Bias Chart

“Let me get this straight about you Earthlings. You cannot drink water from the most abundant source on your planet because it is 3% salt, yet you can easily process various poisons like capsaicin, caffeine, and menthol, with no harm and even some benefits?” “The human body is weird, man.”

“How did you chucklenuts make it through the mind-boggling obstacle of the interstellar void without knowing the difference between an Electrolyte and an Alkaloid?”

We do not know what a “chucklenuts” is

“It’s an affectionate term used for the closest of friends. Ok. Lemme break it down for you, Space Roomba-“

We are not Roombas. We are vastly superior to a mobile vacuum cleaning engine

“Yea but yer still Robots”

“Robot” is German for Laborer. We do not labor. We exterminate.

“Yer a tedious Roomba and you will be quiet for a moment so I can explain!” [presses button]

EEEEEEEEE THAT IS MOST UNPLEASANT
we will be silent

“… good. Right. So, Alkaloids are made by Plants, see, and they’re meant to interface with Cellular Machinery, ye ken? They have specific effects, and they’re constructed and destroyed within the same framework as shit like ATP and Fructose. Ye ken? It’s a chunk of code. Electrolytes? Salt? Bitch, that ain’t food, that’s Voltage! We use that stuff to regulate the electrical potential across membranes; it provides the background voltage to run our redox reactions, kennit? Onboard too much of that shit, it starts frying things! Down at the cellular level, ye ken, membranes rupturing, folding wrong; it’s not the same thing at all! Besides, exactly what kind of mass percentage you think folks can tolerate of capsaicin? 3% would be equally deleterious, you smug bucket of bolts! You didn’t bother studying us at all before you invaded, did you? No wonder it was such a fukken cinch to get the drop on ya.”

WE WILL CONQUER

Striking New York Times tech workers have created a “Guild Builds” page dedicated to strike-themed games you can play, including a spin on Wordle, a word search, and the custom Connections I reported on earlier today. As part of its strike announcement on Monday, the New York Times Tech Guild requested that people don’t cross the digital picket line to play the NYT’s daily puzzle games. This collection of five other games offers an alternative if you want to support the striking workers but also do some brain teasers.

Oh, I didn’t know that.

I was listening to Gordon Lightfoot’s “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” on youtube, and browsing the comments several people mentioned …

Okay. The song is about the real sinking of the freighter the Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Superior in 1975. And there’s a line in the song:

“In the Maritime Sailor’s Cathedral,

The Church Bell chimed till it rang twenty nine times,

For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald”

Which references something that the actual Maritime Church in Detroit did in honour of the ship’s crew. And I just found out in those youtube comments for his song that when Gordon Lightfoot died in May last year (2023), the Maritime Church rang those bells again, this time 30 times. Once for every man on the Edmund Fitzgerald, and once more for Gordon Lightfoot.

That’s … That is a memorial I would be proud to have earned. And proud to give. I do like that. A lot.

Apparently, the Split Rock Lighthouse on Lake Superior also lit its beacon in honour of him.

Sorry. I’m having … extremely maritime sort of feelings over here. Songs and memorials, bells and beacons, and the ways we carry memory forward. That’s … that’s a good memorial. I like that.

My understanding is that Lightfoot wrote the song after hearing the story and being frustrated at the media getting so many facts wrong. He in fact updated some of the lyrics over the years as more information about the wreck came in, because he wanted to make sure he was appropriately recognizing and honoring the men who died. A lot of the families and surrounding community were grateful that he did that, for a ship full of sailors he never knew. So the memorial isn't surprising, all things considered. It's a very fitting one.

Gordon Lightfoot also gave the royalties to the families of the crew. So yeah, a very fitting memorial🥺

Smash the patriarchy. Identify paternalism and misogyny in your life.

Men who negate the voices and experiences of women are afraid to lose their perceived status.

Their 'male superiority' status is a myth.

No matter what a post on tumblr tries to tell you, your moral and ethical stances will never be determined by what you reblog and what you scroll past. Don’t let manipulation tactics force you into doing anything you don’t want to do.

I find it very interesting to note the times in which this post has a sudden resurgence. It often follows very stressful, upsetting events, where a lot of “REBLOG THIS OR YOU SUCK” posts start appearing on this site.

So I’ll say it again: it is okay if you come to tumblr to escape upsetting news. It is okay if you’re just here for fun and fandom. It is okay if you do not want to use your tumblr as a place to read about or spread the current events that are circulating. It is okay if you need a place to decompress and just relax. There are other ways to be involved in/support causes and you are allowed to set boundaries on social media platforms without it being indicative of your belief systems.

Your beliefs, values, ethics, and moral stances are not determined by whether or not you reblog something.

masks and helmets that hides someone's face in such a way that they become the face themselves my beloved

these are all creatures to me

Angel of War, angular and strange, gleaming silver and gold, Angel of Wonder, pure and one-eyed, looking to stars new and old, Angel of Harvest, simple and hidden, bring nature's sweetness to all, Angel of Health, mysterious and fine, beacon when life starts to fall, Angel of the Deep, crooked and cage-like, guide us across the sea, Angel of Solace, protect us from evil, lead us to where we are free.

I love all of these. The angel of the the deep's wings are canvas, held up by an anchor. The angel of war's wings are blades, and its shield is a coffin. The angel of solace is a mutant, its arms deforming into wings. Geiger counter in hand, it guides us through the danger only it knows. Was this angel once a man? Corrupted now beyond hope, he can at least save others from the same fate.

this shit is so incredibly cool that i cannot and refuse to attempt to properly articulate it
