STAR WARS, I ASK ONE THING

Can we please have some prominent, canon LGBTQ+ characters and relationships.

And not ones that are alluded to or mentioned after the film/show/comic/whatever comes out.

It’s explicitly stated that it’s happening, it’s featured and it’s an accurate, good representation of queer people.

Please.

Fuck this train of thinking, and fuck you for thinking that way.

This is not okay.

Romance is not "innuendo." Love is not "innuendo." People need to get it out of their heads that LGBTQ+ people are all about sex, and remember that emotions and love play an important part in all relationships, not just sex.

The moment a child is capable of watching television and movies with their family, they are bombarded with heterosexual romance and physicality, but this is totally fine. The moment a child is "exposed" to non-hetero romance or physicality, it's "inappropriate," regardless of how benign it is.

A teenage boy having a crush on another boy does not mean you're going to watch someone getting their dick sucked on screen. Two consulting same-sex adults on a CW show who share a kiss doesn't mean the next episode will contain a 5-minute long sex scene.

Should children be watching two people getting it on before they and their family think they're mature enough to handle it? No.

But they're going to, because Hollywood is obsessed with sex. Sex sells. Especially heterosexual intercourse, which these children will be exposed to, long before they're mature enough. It's just how society is right now.

What they're not going to be exposed to, in all likelihood, are mainstream networks using same sex intercourse. They might see two women kissing or a couple of guys cuddling on the couch, but that isn't sex. Instead, this discussion is vilifying romance, but only between same-sex couples.

ROMANCE DOES NOT EQUAL SEXUALLY INAPPROPRIATE, STOP TALKING ABOUT IT LIKE IT IS.

Before you tout inclusion, ask yourself: Do I think we're "risking innuendo" by including these characters? If the answer is yes, you need to take a long, hard look at how society treats heterosexual relationships compared to any other kind, and then ask yourself that question again, because we "risk innuendo" with almost every program on television, every movie, and every novel that includes romantic gesture.

Inclusion isn't about sex. It's about allowing people to see themselves, to identify with characters, to form bonds with the medium. I know for me, as an openly gay cisgender man, seeing same-sex romance is so much more important than seeing the physical aspect of relationships on-screen.

So get off your high horse, thinking you're "protecting children" when you say you're worried about "including innuendo." Innuendo is already everywhere. You just don't want to see two men kiss.

I think it’s time I try to finish that Star Wars Sequel interpretation I started a few years ago. If I manage that, it will be the longest, most complex piece of literature I’ve written to date.

But first, I need to reread literally all of what I’ve already posted.

If you want to go with me on my journey, it begins with my “The Last Jedi” rewrite, “Make Your Own Hope” and continues into a series of chaptered short fics featuring the Sequel Trio.

Update: I’ve finished rereading everything and I distinctly remember that I had no idea how I was going to end the war with the First Order. All I knew was that it had something to do with Rey killing/subduing Kylo Ren, and Leia was gonna die. That’s it. That’s all I remember.

God. I last updated this in early 2019.

I guess now I can start hashing out an ending.

Interviewer: What was it like piloting the greatest ship in Star Wars history?
Oscar Isaac: Oh, it was amazing. John and I were 100% on board, the directors just never gave us the opportunity to really play it out-
Interviewer: Sorry, you and John? What are you talking about?
Oscar: ...The greatest ship in Star Wars. Finnpoe?
Interviewer:
Interviewer: I was referring to the Millennium Falcon.
Oscar: Oh.
Oscar: ...Meh.
