Interviewer: What was it like piloting the greatest ship in Star Wars history?
Oscar Isaac: Oh, it was amazing. John and I were 100% on board, the directors just never gave us the opportunity to really play it out-
Interviewer: Sorry, you and John? What are you talking about?
Oscar: ...The greatest ship in Star Wars. Finnpoe?
Interviewer:
Interviewer: I was referring to the Millennium Falcon.
Oscar: Oh.
Oscar: ...Meh.

I’ve been saying for two years now, and it hasn’t changed

it wasn’t queerbaiting. The actors endorsed it. They never once gave us reason to believe it was actually going to happen. That was all on us.

The people who are upset at the studio for being afraid to take risks have the right idea - but this was not an example of queerbaiting, as the studio never implied, promoted, or told us directly by any means, including interviews, press releases, actor quotes, etc, that the ship would ever be canon.

Fellow clowns...

How are we feeling? Have we all been baited? Maybe. But was it really their fault?

I mean dont get me wrong I am absolutely crushed by the news... but we cant go around pointing fingers :/ JJ did his best (at least I hope so) to bring the trilogy to an end. His job as the director of the upcoming movie was to complete the saga on a note that the Star Wars fans would end up enjoying, not to play matchmaker with all of the new characters.

Oscar and John knew about our love for these two characters so much so that they chose to let us know its almost certainly not in the movie than to make us wait and be dissatisfied and mad there on the spot when we went into the movie theater. And it sucks. We’ve been waiting for 4 years for something ANYTHING and yet, we end up with nothing. If it was up to the actors sure I completely sincerely feel that it would have happened but it cant. Its not about the audience or the movie directors its about the system, the one in place that the higher up important proplr are too afraid to move and change. Im not even sure if what Im saying here makes any sense but I guess its just about the societal norms that surround us and the franchise. Representation is important to them sure, to a certain extent, because after that line its always “up to the fans to decide” “up to the fans to believe whatever thay want”

We were clowns from the start weve all known, the circus has been building up for a while. The constant “Will it happen?! Will it not?” Has brought us back over and over and over to the point where we all looked at the least important thing and called them out on it wishing that whatever we were making up turned out to be true.

Im not mad at any of them or any of what we’ve accomplished. How can I be? Im angry at myself for hoping when there was almost none to begin with

And thats the tea on that

And then you have the fans like me, who knew there wouldn’t be a payoff for the ship directly, and take no issue with this announcement because fanon trumps canon when it comes to representation, almost 100% of the time. I’m just happy Oscar and John embraced it as easily as they did.

The best part about this last stretch is that, although Oscar has pretty much put the idea to rest (begrudgingly), John has been on overdrive with it. So we still don’t really know what to expect.

Oscar Isaac describes “the deep, deep connection” between Poe and Finn and getting to spend more time with John Boyega and Daisy Ridley in ‘The Rise of Skywalker’.

I’m pretty sure that at 1:57, he’s talking about his part in portraying finnpoe as a real concept. Everything he says after that, about only being able to do so much as a performer, about it being a more original concept, and that “the potential is there” pretty well fits into the idea that we don’t get Finnpoe, but Finnpoe can still be an interpretation of the situation.

Let’s not forget that, even today, Mark Hamill encourages people to interpret Luke however they want - I get the feeling that Oscar (and probably John) are aiming for a similar feeling.

Why Stormpilot is unlikely to be canon

I have nothing in the world against the Stormpilot ship, and Finn and Poe are massively cute together, but I do not think they will end up together. Why?

1. I’ve said this before, but for romances in film to work, the characters need to both challenge each other, affect change in each other in a meaningful way. One way you can tell Luke and Leia would never have ended up together (aside from being changed to siblings towards the ending of course), is that neither Luke nor Leia significantly change each other, or challenge each other in A New Hope. In contrast, Leia and Han did.

2. With Finn, he is in the interesting situation in that Poe, Rey, and Rose all have impact on him, and he is changed for meeting all of them.  However, only one of those characters is changed through meeting him, and it’s not Poe and it’s not Rey. It’s Rose. Poe Dameron was just a 2-dimensional character in TFA, and was unchanged by meeting with Finn. Poe finally gets a character arc in TLJ, and it’s not with Poe or Rey, but in reality Leia and Holdo. Only Rose has an arc that is in direct response to her relationship with Finn, and because of Finn that alters her worldview.

3. *sigh* It’s Disney. They want to try hard with that Chinese and other international markets, and the movie industry has always tended to be more conservative to appeal to that. I think the fact Zorii Bliss is showing up in TROS is a sign to international viewers that Poe likes women (though we can all fancanon him as bi).

Narratively, on film, there has been no set up thus far for Poe and Finn to have a romantic relationship. And while Resistance Reborn is delightfully shippy, it has no bearing on the films. Finn and Poe look cute together, but they have no STORY together that fits the usual formats of romantic writing. Finn and Rose do, and will likely be canon.

I should also point out that what I said about character challenging each other,  changing each othe, holds true for all other relationships in media and Star Wars as well. Finnrey also won’t be canon for the same reason Finnpoe won’t be–Rey is never challenged or changes emotionally because of Finn, even if he is changed by her. Rey only challenges and is challenged by Kylo/Ben.

My take:

A. Romance in film can be complex and dynamic, or it can be simple and satisfying. Many a romantic comedy or drama have been successful without one or either character actively changing throughout. Most “change” in those films comes from the characters realizing they have feelings for each other, not changing their inherent motivations or personalities.

B. Leia didn’t change as a result of knowing Han, other than the idea that she’d go into battle for him. I will agree that Han changed a lot, but I would argue that a lot of that came from knowing Luke, rather than Leia.

C. Poe was not intended to be important after TFA, which is one reason he seems so two-dimensional. The response to his character came as a surprise to the studio, which is why he “didn’t get an arc until TLJ.”

D. Poe was originally supposed to go with Finn in TLJ, but Johnson decided the two characters sounded too much alike to “have an adventure.” This is utter crap and evidence that Johnson fails as a character writer. Rose’s big change was finding the courage to fight, the same as Finn, but Poe could have easily come to discover things on that little excursion, too. It certainly would have been more believable than “Holdo’s dumb, let’s have a coup.”

E. Disney is the king of easter eggs. In order to appease their international audiences, things could be kept under the radar, while still applying forward-thinking, character-driven ideas. Little things, like Poe’s ring, or little one-liners that suggest things went a certain way before the film, go a long way with understood subtext. We all understand we’re not getting a Finnrose-like kiss. That doesn’t exclude us from being validated in a way we see, but is difficult to measure in more censored venues.

F. Honestly, if Resistance Reborn is to be considered actual canon, stormpilot is as canon as Reylo, Finnrey, or Finnrose.
