Zhou Zishu's Meditation Guide (Episode 4)

Omg the YouTube subs were so bad. If you were relying of the subs I’m quite sure you didn’t understand what he meant xD “be absorbed in and push your gas to your suprapubic area LOL” SORRY I CAN’T NOOOO

In Episode 4, Zhou Zishu teaches Zhang Chengling to mediate using the following steps, “眼观鼻,鼻观心,五心朝天,合气汇丹田”. We need to break the sentence down to understand what he’s saying.

  • “眼观鼻,鼻观心” - This is an old idiom. literal translation: eyes on your nose, nose on your heart. This means to concentrate.
  • “五心朝天” - Lit translated: keep your five hearts faced towards the sky. This is a posture that’s frequently used in Taoism. The five hearts refer to one’s hands, feet and their head. So one should sit cross legged with their feet and hands facing up towards the sky. It was believed that this posture would help with the meridian flow. In modern times, this is called “双盘座” (loose translation: double plate seat”. It should look like the image below.
  • “合气汇丹田” - To concentrate your energy into your dantian. The dantian is a focal point used in traditional Chinese medicine and Chinese martial arts. (You might see this around frequently in the wuxia/xianxia genre). You can read more about dantians. https://www.healthline.com/health/dantian#locations

七窍三秋钉 - Seven Times Impaled, Three Autumns Nailed

A fun facts and exploration post!

Something a little different this time because @tian-chuang’s twitter thread on What is the meaning of Zhou Zi Shi’s seven nails? landed me in a sea of 经络图 | jīng luò tú (known in English as meridian diagrams).

Disclaimer: Before this evening, all I knew of meridian pathways was that they exist, clearing meridian blockages and circulating Qi is a major part martial arts practice featured in many wuxia novels and also that 七窍 refers to our seven orifices.

Kindly excuse any over-analyzing. This is all very new exciting for me :D!!!!

Please check out this amazing article that @fwoopersongs has written! She has pieced together the locations of Zhou Zishu’s nails, and their corresponding organs. Everyone needs to read this!

What is the meaning of Zhou Zi Shi’s seven nails? Aka 七窍三秋钉” (Qīqiào sānqiū dīng)?

It does NOT translate to the Nails of Seven torments LOL

In episode 1, when Zhou Zi meets the emperor and removes his clothes. The emperor quotes this statement that sums up the function of the seven nails - “七窍三秋钉,三载赴幽冥” (Qīqiào sānqiū dīng, sān zài fù yōumíng)

This phrase can be broken down as follows

  • 七窍 - These refers to the 7 orifices in the body. (Eyes, Nose, Mouth and Ears). In Chinese medicine, it’s believed that the essence of the 5 organs (Heart, Liver, Spleen, Lungs, Kidney) are dependent on these 7 orifices. (this is the basis of Chinese medicine even till today so it’s not hocus pocus.)
  • 三秋 - Three autumns. This refers to 3 years. In ancient times, crops only ripened once ever year, hence the years were counted as per the number of autumns.
  • 钉 - Nails
  • 三载 - This refers to 3 years. 载 (years) is used specifically in the Tang and Yu Era
  • 赴 - to reach. It’s also means to give an orbituary (赴告)
  • 幽冥 - the netherworld

So if you translate it, it would be - to nail the seven orifices (hence, sealing the five organs) for three autumns, and one will reach the netherworld in three years. (Lol sorry that’s a mouthful in English lol)
