Celtic Folklore [Fairies]
The Fairies of Ireland will be the topic of today's educational blog post
Firstly while I will be using the term Fairies in this blog post for continuity, the Irish refrain from calling them the Fae or Fairies and Prefer to call them " The Good People' or " The Little People"
The Fairies of the Emerald Isles were said to reside in a parallel universe to that of the mundane world.
Usually stated to be underground the realm of the Fairies is said to be mostly invisible to humans. The Fairies of Irish folklore are unlike the Fairies found within the writings of Disney and Winx Club.
They are of a darker brood, Still Majestic and Beautiful even awe inspiring, but some are dangerous and uncaring of the mortals they Encounter in their tales.
Let us go over some of the most well known Irish Fairies in their Folklore
- Pooka
- Dullahan
- Changelings
- Banshees
- Leprechaun
The Pooka: Commonly Referred to as Puca, it is a type of shape shifter in Irish Folklore which takes the shape of Animals or Humans with animal Features. Depending on the Area of Ireland they are seen as either helpful or they cause havoc wherever they step. Dullahan: Also known as the Headless Horseman. The Dullahan is a malevolent harbinger of death. It is said to be the embodiment of Crom Dubh, a fertility god who demanded blood sacrifice in the form of decapitation. Changelings: A fairy that was left in place of a human child or baby who had been stolen by the fairies. ( this was a way for them to explain away miscarriages, children with autism, down syndrome) Humans would often leave these babies out in the woods to parish. Banshees: a female spirit who wails outside a home to warn of the imminent death of a family member. The scream is also known as "caoine," which literally translates to "keening". She has also been called woman of the mound as in many of the stories she stands outside the homes and cry's from the fairy Mounds. Leprechaun:a type of fairy that is often depicted as a tiny, bearded man wearing an emerald ensemble. Leprechauns are said to live in remote places and make shoes and brogues. They are solitary by nature and are a symbol of what happens when you let your greed win. Quit literally the Folly of the Get Rich Quick Mentality Of Many Humans.
These are but a small sample of the many fairies found throughout Irish and Celtic Folklore, These specifically can trace their origins back to The Tuatha De Danann or fairy nobility. Also seen as Gods and Demons depending on the era. As well as the original inhabitants of Ireland who only Tolerate our existence so long as we don't disturb the places and sacred sites they hold dear.
All over Ireland, farmers have left portions of their land, in the form of Ring Forts untouched for centuries. These are believed to be the homes of the fairies and are overgrown with scrub and bush. But farmers would rather see this resource go to waste than risk incurring the wrath of the fairies, which can result in anything from crop failure to DEATH.
This a recurring theme you will see throughout Irish history a respect for the property owned by the Fae and a rightful fear at the consequences of disturbing sacred ground.
Other Folk Practices to appease fairies or at the very least keep you on their good side include Offerings of sweets and goods in which holds value to the person leaving the offering, back in the day it was things like this

- Butter
- Porridge
- Gold
- Tobacco
- Poitín

Hey everyone! Now that our shop has been open for nearly a year and have learned a lot about what we do and don't like from a hosting service for our website, we've decided to make a hosting service swap! Imbolc Rituals and Celebrations
Imbolc (celebrated February 1st/2nd) is the rough halfway point between the winter solstice and spring equinox. It's a day to celebrate spring's approach and is one of my personal favorite Sabbats. I love knowing that the sun is slowly returning and I'll be able to start planting my veggie garden soon.
There are a lot of ways to celebrate this holiday, but here are a few of my favorites:
- A feast, or at least a special meal. I have plans to make a warm, hearty curry loaded with veggies tomorrow. Anything rich and hearty with dairy, grain, root/winter veggies, etc is great!
- Bake yourself or your loved ones some fresh bread. Grain is a key part of Imbolc for how well it keeps through the frigid winter months. Oats and barley are some key ones, but wheat is just fine too- use what you have. I often like to make herbed breads to go with warm stews or soups.
- Get a jump-start on your spring cleaning. Clean your house as much as you can, whether it's a top-to-bottom deep clean or just a few chores that have piled up. It's a great way to sweep out any stagnant or negative energies that may have built up. If you live somewhere warm enough, open up your windows to let out the dust and energy.
- Light candles or burn a fire in your hearth. This is a great way to symbolize the light and warmth returning. Consider it similar to inviting the sun into your home. Bonus: burn candles in the colors of Imbolc (red, white, green are most common).
- Tend to some plants, or begin planning your garden for the year. A main point of Imbolc is the celebration of the seeds in the ground that are waiting to sprout. If you've been neglecting your indoor plants, give them a little extra care. If you have plans to start a garden this year, grab a journal and start taking notes on when you will plant, what care each plant you'll be growing needs, and so on.
- Journal, rest, or otherwise practice self-care. Take a warm bath and rest your joints, set some intentions for the coming months, spend some time meditating or practicing some introspection.

Völva and Seiðr - A Very Brief Introduction
The term Völva (Old Norse Vǫlva) is often misunderstood or mistranslated. A Völva is a Seeress. A Völva acts as a prophetess or priestess by means of performing seiðr (Swedish sejd).
Seiðr is a particular type of Norse magic most often used for divination or clairvoyance. Freyja was the original seiðkona, and it was she who introduced this craft to the gods and to those who followed in her path as a Völva. A Völva performs trancework to journey to the world of spirit, and once there she can ask questions on behalf of herself or others. Sometimes the answers will be shown to her through a vision, and other times the answers will be either spoken to or through her by the spirits.
Spákona is sometimes used synonymously with seiðkona, but the distinction is that a spákona is specifically a woman who prophesizes, while a seiðkona is a broad term describing any woman who performs seiðr.

What is spirit companionship?
Spirit companionship is the process through which you invite an entity or spirit into your life to form a deep and meaningful bond. Your relationship with your entity/spirit companion will be unique to you — some relationships are built on mutual interests, romance, magical practices, work dynamics, shared interests or cultural exchanges, while others focus on the truest sense of companionship: friendship! For those looking to hone their craft, learn something new, challenge their personal thinking, develop their clairs, fend off loneliness, or just meet a really cool being to forge a connection with, spirit companionship is a complex and beautiful experience.
Isn't it unethical to sell spirits? What am I buying exactly?
We want to be clear that we do not sell spirits or entities— we sell a match making service! You're not paying for a living being, you're paying for the time spent getting to know the being, vetting them, doing art (for Astra and Ember specifically), writing documentation which you receive when the binding is complete, and for any physical materials used in the conjuration and vetting process.
Non-consensual and/or forced bindings are absolutely unethical, and we are vehemently against such practices.
What is a binding?
Once you and a spirit/entity are paired, typically a binding of some type (whether to yourself, a vessel, or both) will be performed, which acts as a connection point between you and your entity/spirit. One way to think of the binding is like a bridge or a telephone number — it enhances your connection to each other so that you may more easily find one another and communicate on your own terms. Bindings at Three Souls are not in any way restrictive or non-consensual, and may be broken by either party at any time. When you receive your companion document, you will find an "About Bindings" section that goes over the nuances of how our bindings work.
