First Impressions: Wonder Egg Priority
**this review is spoiler free!**
With all of the anime series returning this anime season (The Promised Neverland s2, Dr. Stone s2, etc) I wasn’t expecting to have time for any of the new original shows airing in Winter 2021. However, with its odd title and brief, vague description on MAL, Wonder Egg Priority caught my eye immediately.
Mother’s Basement channel on youtube described the show as “Hyouka meets Madoka”, and as someone who loves both Hyouka and Madoka Magica, I knew that this show would be up my alley. Wonder Egg Priority is about a troubled young girl named Ai Ohto who is approached by a magical being offering her an opportunity to save someone she has lost; in order to do this, she is transported to an alternate dimension (of sorts) and must protect what is inside of the egg she was given.
I don’t want to say too much because I went into it knowing almost nothing, but fair warning, this show covers A TON of triggering topics such as suicide, depression, self-harm, bullying, etc., and potentially more; there’s all of that already and I’m only three episodes into the show. However, so far they seem to be handling all of these difficult themes gracefully and appropriately.
I think that this show has the potential to be one of my favorite anime of all time. I like shows that handle sensitive topics in a way that doesn’t leave you full of dread, and so far Wonder Egg Priority is doing exactly that. Ai Ohto is a wonderful protagonist, and I’m looking forward to getting to know some of the other characters featured on the poster, since they are seemingly leading players as well. Not to mention, both the opening and ending songs absolutely slap (especially the ED, I can’t stop listening to it!)
With the way the show is going, I have a feeling I will be making a WYSW (why you should watch) post about it in the future, but I did want to post something capturing my initial thoughts. Thanks for reading!
